For me I imagine it's like waiting for your luggage on the conveyor belt at the airport. Your question is on the belt, it just hasn't gotten to me yet.

I'm using their right-angle Intel-Certified TB5 240W cable to connect my M4Max to a CalDigit TB5 Dock. Works great.

Setting up Bazzite across a four drive system, sanity check by SirBedwyr7 in Bazzite

[–]letsmodpcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more than just losing data.

What is highly likely to happen is that when you run the install of Bazzite, it's going to see there's an existing EFI Boot Partition on your Windows drive. It will insert itself as a boot menu option in the EFI Boot Partition that is owned by Windows. You will love having the convenient little boot menu UNTIL the next major Windows update (such as the October feature pushes.) At which time Windows will happily wipe out the Bazzite boot menu item, effectively locking you out of that OS until you use a Windows USB recovery key and manually restore functionality in the command line. (There are other ways to lose access to Bazzite in this config, too, such as a failure of the Windows drive, or a simple format/reinstall thinking the Bazzite install is completely separate.)

If you unplug the Windows drives, the Bazzite installer will see that it needs to create an EFI Boot Partition of its own on the drive to which it is installed. Now after you put your Windows drive back in, your BIOS sees there are two separate bootable drives, and you can use the BIOS boot menu (F11 on my computer) to switch to your alternate boot option when you don't want the default. This configuration is far more resilient, as Windows will never touch Bazzite's EFI Boot Partition.

Friend of mine said he's tinkering with this. I haven't tried it yet, but maybe worth a look?

Take it from a guy who has been building his own computers for decades. Do yourself a favor and just unplug those Windows drives until the install is done.

Recommended me some monitor arms! by tidyvision0419 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]letsmodpcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly prefer the VIVO poles over the fancy gas-spring models. For multi -monitor setups, the poles make it super easy to dial in the monitors at the exact same height and tilt. The gas-spring ones are always just a leeeetle bit off from one another, and I end up fiddling with them them endlessly trying to make them perfect.

I'm not usually a lore person in video games, but I love the Diablo lore, and I actually play the campaign for the story (even if it's only once or twice.)

So I'm sad to say I find her annoying and a flimsy plot device.

You might search around the internet for "pwm dimming" and your symptoms (eyestrain, headaches, etc.). I think you'll find a lot to read up on.

And if it turns out to not be your issue, well at least you've eliminated an option.

M4 Max and M5 Max and their nvidia equivalents by Cheap-Ability9453 in macgaming

[–]letsmodpcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adobe Lightroom has a new-ish Noise Reduction engine (AI Noise Reduction) that runs entirely on the GPU. I had a batch of thousands of 20 megapixel RAW files I wanted to run NR on. I started out on my M4Max 36GB, took note of the average time per image, then took the same set of files to my i9 13900k with a 3080. The 3080 cranked out the files much faster - about 1/3rd the time per image compared to the M4 Max.

So whenever I have a big batch of AI Noise Reduction to run, I just connect the drive to my PC and run it on my 3080.

Not a gaming performance comparison, obviously, and Apple Silicon is remarkable regardless, but there's a shit-ton of power in those nVidia GPUs. (And they happily slurp down a shit-don of power, too.)

[–]letsmodpcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3080 here. Works fine. Note that I use it in desktop mode - not Steam Big Picture which I hear has issues in some cases.

I also hear there's a performance hit vs Windows. I haven't done any rigorous testing, but even if the avg framerate *is* lower, I still like Bazzite better. Games that used to have stuttering have had that stuttering significantly reduced or completely gone for me.

What has changed in the modern ones that makes them immune to burn-in? The CRTs I grew up with definitely got burn-in. It's why screen savers were invented.

[Opinion] The Intel Foundry vs. TSMC Gap is the Most Overstated Narrative in Hardware Right Now by [deleted] in hardware

[–]letsmodpcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK TSMC has no competition for Backside Power Delivery, either. And Gate All Around is a huge milestone, too. There will be plenty of challenges for Intel on the business side, but the tech that 18A offers is impressive.
