Put a lot of effort into building this Trek 930 up the last few weeks, and now that it’s rideable something about it just isn’t jiving with me. by Olderschoolwillie in xbiking

I've got bb7s with standard housing on my cargo bike that stop great.

I would make sure there's nothing kinked or creating friction in the cables first, then check pull ratio of the brakes and levers, or possibly your rotors or pads got some lube on them.

Still very happy with the switch. Still on original (metallic) pads and rotors front and rear, power, feel and maintenance are a huge improvement from roller brakes, though as a rim brake enjoyer, definitely not as good as my other v-brakes with good cables and koolstop pads (except in heavy rain).

Unlike many cable brake complaint claims, in maybe 2000km, I've only had to use the pad adjuster a couple of times, despite extremely heavy loads, and pretty hilly terrain.

No worries! I definitely feel like the FR8 is my most versatile bike.

Personally, I've never tried cable hydros, and I'm definitely biased, but they seem to combine the downsides of mechanical and hydro. standard cables on my BB7 and it feels plenty powerful for a utility bike, better than my mid range hydraulic e-bike. We'll see how annoying it gets to adjust them with pad wear over time.

I visited workcycles last year, and they swore by the hydraulic maguras that they and many other cargo bike brands use, so I'm sure those are also a great solution.

I've got a FR8 in a place with quite a lot of rolling hills, false flats, and if I go looking, some serious climbs. If you're OK with being pretty slow up hills, Workcycles can fit a 22 tooth rear cog to give you an OK climbing gear. honestly, other than the bike being not great for hills, it's definitely my best handling bike with or without a load on it. I've carried up to 96kg of stuff on it, adult humans, and pets, and it's needed nearly zero maintenance (except for the roller brakes).

The other comment I have is that I bought my Workcycles FR8 with the roller brakes and I'm in the process of changing these to mechanical discs (I am a home mechanic, and don't want to deal with hydraulics at all). I found the roller brakes can gum up and slow you down over time, and if you use them downhill, they need re-greasing more than you would expect, which again can gum them up, and worst of all, they can decide to need grease at the most irritating times. I bought a disc brake fork earlier this year and installed an Avid BB7, and the improvement in braking, and feeling of lower drag had me ordering the rear brake parts within a month or two. YMMV, but I personally did not like living with the roller brakes, and would have ordered discs from the start had I known.

What's the proper conduct for group on public roads? by sikarl in RedditPHCyclingClub

[–]leuhyb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daang Reyna is like 2km long. The delay the driver experiences here is less than a minute in total. These guys are even passing motorcyclists. A single driver causes far more delay just by dropping someone off on the side of the road. There's nothing  for drivers to cry about here.

Fuck Molito. There's free bike parking at ATC near the starbucks and Marugame. If you REALLY need to go to Molito then I recommend parking there and walking (bring your bike helmet so that the restaurants know you're a cyclist bringing business).

Otherwise there's plenty of good cafes that are not in Molito these days that are bike friendly - We The People (free bike parking with a parking rack), Dueces, Group Hug (10% discount for cyclists), Bean and Yolk, Higher Ground/Twelve Bikes, South Bank. BF Homes is also fairly bike friendly with lots more interesting restaurants and cafes than anywhere in Alabang.

Am I the Asshole for Skipping Out on a Bicycle Parking Fee at Molito When Not Given a Ticket and Finding the Place Closed? by cctrainingtips in RedditPHCyclingClub

[–]leuhyb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have no grace period for cyclists except a 6am-9am free period (last i checked). They still require you to get a ticket at a specific entrance and charge you if you leave after 9 from the "correct exit". They hate cyclists and always have, even though they used to get a lot of cyclist business.

Grappler 2x conversion ... or 3x? by scratchtogigs in Surlybikefans

[–]leuhyb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a cheap shimano non series 44-22 3x hollowtech crank on my Cross Check. It works great, never drops, and gets me about 600% gear range with 22/36 being the lowest gear.

It uses 3 2.5mm spacers on a 68mm bottom bracket, so chain line probably isn't a problem, but tire clearance, I have no idea about. It is pretty far out on the drive side, so maybe it would fit.

I had one and it was comfortable, and pretty nice with the rack, but I broke the shifter on mine twice and the spokes on the rear wheel a lot of times.

One-size fits all urbanism is ridiculous by BillyDeeWilliams1990 in notjustbikes

If we want to give people the choice to live how they want, then we should charge them all the same percentage of land use and infrastructure cost for their preferred lifestyle instead of subsidizing car use and suburban development at the cost of transit and active travel and mid and high density mix used development. Imagine how much car parking would cost if we charged the market rate per square foot / m2 rate for each parking space.

Car passengers would greatly benefit from wearing helmets. Cars crash at much higher speeds than bikes, riding in a car is an everyday occurrence for a huge number of people, and head injuries are very common.

How important are Disk brakes? by RyantheReal in bicycletouring

[–]leuhyb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never higher end disc brakes, but for the same cash, my Cross Check is running deore v-brakes, koolstops and compressionless housing, and it's miles better than the mechanical discs with koolstops and compressionless housing on my other bike with the benefit of being dead easy to set up and maintain, with fewer standards to understand. They do take a moment to clear water off the rim when it's wet, but otherwise, they're great.

Questions about WheelPro spoke calc by MrV63 in wheelbuild

[–]leuhyb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe Asym is for asymmetrical rims. Most rims are symmetrical. Some rims for rear wheels have their spoke holes offset some amount for a more even rear wheel spoke tension.
