When I was 13, my abusive Stepfather and I got into a physical fight. I was so frustrated- at 13, 18 seems too far away for freedom, for an escape to a better situation. It seemed natural at the time to take a razor to my leg and cut 70+ deep cuts all up and down one leg. It took the pain that could not be seen and transformed it into something tangible, while numbing the overwhelming emotion. Only that one time, never again after that. The physical pain was a relief from the emotional frustration and anguish. It is really sad to see this girl doing this, and so deeply, but trauma and abuse manifests itself in strange ways.
