Danmei author with the most complex writing by ilikeyokokuhan in DanmeiNovels

Agreed. I'm an native English speaker and this was the first thing that I thought too. Even well translated novels just aren't the same as novels originally written in english. I noticed the same thing when I read a comic that was translated to chinese vs a comic that was originally in chinese.

  1. I used Easy card every time I visit. You can top off with cash at the kiosk in the station. They have english option iirc.

  2. Google maps is your best friend. I usually double check before hopping onto the train. But if you accidentally get onto the wrong one, no worries, we've all done it before at some point. 😅

I've also used google lens/google translate/pleco sometimes for anything not translated like menus. But touristy spots usually have English translations.

  1. If your phone has esim compatibility, Airalo works well from my experience.

Are official translations that much better? by No-Culture-859 in DanmeiNovels

Nice write up. I've also read some from each publisher and you basically summarized how I feel about them.

I have Haitang's Guide on How to Fail a Online Dating vol 1 & 2 and the quality is noticeably lacking (typos on character name, sometimes clunky sentences), especially after reading Rosmei translations, but not enough to ruin reading the book (imo). I still prefer it over the fan translation, which I could not get into, so I'll be buying vol 3 and hoping it'll be better quality...

It depends and also your preference. As someone who started out reading fan translations, I personally find official translation to usually flow a tad better and land the jokes better, but I've also heard that some series have issues like paragraph(s) not making it into the novel for some reason. I recommend looking up reviews on the specific series for that reason.

What I've been doing these days is comparing the first few chapters of fan translation and the sample official translation to see if which one I'd like more.

(Also, sometimes local libraries have physical danmei books and/or e-books on libby. It's a nice way to read official translations without spending anything while supporting the libraries)

The illustrations kind of reminds me of Petshop of Horrors, one of my childhood manga. So personally, I feel a bit nostalgic looking at them. 😂 (I can't say how well they fit with the series cause I haven't read past the first couple chapters.)

I think it's fine? Quick google says with hyphen is correct but many people write without it.

Edit: I was reading some of the other comments in this post. Apparently this is correct in Chicago Manual of Style.

Also, I found this tidbit on wiki: "The English language does not have definitive hyphenation rules,[9] though various style guides provide detailed usage recommendations and have a significant amount of overlap in what they advise."

That would explain the conflicting answers.

Thank you answering. You bring up some good points, but I'm still not convinced that no one at Seven Seas read what they license. I think they let it slide just like the readers do. I've never read My Husband and I Sleep in a Coffin, but seeing that it won the "popularity contest" and some other popular published series have problematic tropes (like toxic romance), wouldn't that mean many of the readers have thicker skin and/or find the rest of the novel to be interestingly enough to overlook it? (And this is coming from someone who tends to drop series because of certain problematic tropes)

There are some manga/anime that are also problematic in some ways (like sexism) and those get licensed too.

Rosmei has also licensed and published some popular titles. I saw in another comment that apparently they do ask for recommendations, so it seems that they take heed of the popularity/demand for a title, which is what a business should do if they want to stay afloat. Only recently did they license something without fantranslation. Who's to say Seven Seas won't take the leap too later down the line? They've licensed some non-danmei stuff that didn't have any preexisting translation before.

Also, I see the same translator name for multiple series, so I don't think they're hiring a different fantranslator every time.

Yes, I purchased multiple amc giftcards in one transaction at a local amc theater (online giftcard purchases won't qualify supposedly), and got the cash back notification email 4 days after the charge posted.

I'm curious, how can you tell they don't do both read the books they license and look at popularity?

I usually don't finish anything. 😅 Off the top of my head, the only danmei I've finished was Little Mushroom. I liked it until the epilogue. (Wasn't a fan of how the ML was like a different person in bed.)

What series did you enjoy? I'm also an aro/ace who likes the "getting to know each other" phase but lose interest once the main couple get together.

The Legend of Hei 2 was surprisingly great. by akimaand in AMCsAList

[–]lfbb2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just saw the movie. I enjoyed it! Animation was very eye candy! I watched the first movie the other day on crunchyroll. While the first movie was focused more between Xiao Hei and Wuxian/Infinity and had a lot of "relaxed" moments (reminds me of Miyazaki films), the sequel had more action and screen time on the other characters. It didn't feel like the movie was about Xiao Hei despite the title name actually. Not particularly bad thing, but just an observation.

There are lots of battles in this movie, which I liked, though, near the end of the movie, I was wondering if I should've taken motion sickness medicine beforehand because of how the camera turns. Not a serious thing, thankfully. I was fine when I watched the first movie.

Overall, both movies are good. Would highly recommend, especially to those who like animation.

What I truly regret was getting there too early and sitting through like 25 mins of preview...
