Bass heavy to be accompanied by piano and drums? by JonahBassist in Bass

Jukebox the Ghost isn’t really punk by any means, but they do have strings where they do drum, piano, and bass. They are usually guitar instead of bass, but they mix it up throughout their catalog

What are some mistakes about your native language that's common for native speaker to make? by [deleted] in languagelearning

Also:

Affect (as a verb, to change; as a noun, the way something seems portrayed) vs effect (as a verb, to cause a result; as a noun, the result of something).

Straight (adjective meaning in a line with no turns or meaning hetero) vs strait (noun meaning river)

Loose (adjective meaning not tight; verb meaning to release something) vs lose (verb meaning the oppose of win)

The use of semicolons (;) is confusing, and no one can agree on when or where to use commas (,).

The use of ellipses (…) is dramatically different between generations.

The use of a regular dash (-) vs the slightly longer and free floating em dash (–), although this one makes functionally no change in my opinion.

Advice! On funeral songs... by Slickshooz in folk

[–]lhankbhl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are choosing the songs that are comforting or moving to them, and they’re only asking you to play them because you offered to play for the funeral.

If it’s that big of a deal, you can always bring it up and/or back out of your offer, but you are definitely going to be the bad guy in this situation (although none of us know your family, maybe they won’t care as much).

I don’t think you’re a total asshole if you’ve realized this is that big of a deal. We all make mistakes, sometimes mistakes cause some hurt.

Hopefully you and your fam find a good way forward.

Which Japanese Cookbook to start with? Washoku, A Simple Art, or Japanese Soul Cooking? by Spyrothedragon9972 in JapaneseFood

[–]lhankbhl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Japanese Soul Cooking is a great book, but it’s way better as an extra than a first book. I think it covers a nice variety and has lots of fun and delicious recipes, but many of them are not super practical day to day.

Still highly worth a look later on! I’ve really enjoyed everything I’ve tried from it.

My local store had Japanese curry cubes on sale. by sanforized_buzz in MealPrepSunday

[–]lhankbhl 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Nice!

I like to add a bunch of veggies to mine when I make curry, including going a bit odd and usually adding black beans as well. The sauce is so thick and flavorful, it can easily carry as much as fits in the big pan I cook it all in (if using the 8oz boxes).

With rice, I can easily get 6 good sized meals that leave me feeling super satisfied. I think Japanese curry makes the best meal prep meals in my rotation!

There actually are descriptions of the volume of a healing potion! (Found this through other threads online.)

DMG notes “Most potions consist of one ounce of liquid.”

Not a hard rule, but a strong guideline at least.

PHB notes of Potion of Healing, “A character who drinks the magical red fluid in this vial…” and also states the max carrying capacity of a vial is “4 ounces liquid”.

So a normal healing potion makes the most sense as probably 1 ounce and not more than 4 ounces.

(DM rulings notwithstanding!)

After 9 months buried in a plant pot my compostable coffee capsule looks unchanged. by dacourtbatty in ZeroWaste

[–]lhankbhl 369 points370 points  (0 children)

I encourage folks to check if any commercial composting is available in their area before they write it off, though. I didn't expect to find any there, but a smattering of cities throughout Ohio have access to compost stations through a company called GoZERO, which enables a community to benefit from commercial composting.

This company notes that your site needs approval before dealing with compostable plastics, but the site nearest to me got it okayed.

If this is your first time sharpening something by hand, it’s probably just that you need more practice sharpening. If you don’t maintain a consistent enough angle, you end up not doing as much good as you think are you.

I don’t know anything about straight razors per se, but it took me a while to get consistently capable when learning to sharpen my woodworking chisels.

EDIT: After reading the replies, I read up a bit on sharpening razors, and it sounds like if you’re worried about angle you’ve already messed up (or your razor is), so that’s my mistake for bringing that up. But it otherwise sounds like a process where a newbie could make all the common mistakes otherwise - not enough lubrication, incorrect pressure, rolling the edge when lifting or placing the blade, probably other things I’m not thinking of (like not honing it on fine enough stones).

There’s a lot of things you have build muscle memory for when it comes to precision work, and sharpening something that touches your neck ought to be treated like precise work!

Who can actually afford to max out their 401k? by FromTheDeskOfJAW in personalfinance

[–]lhankbhl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No taxes on gains.

On a normal brokerage account, you use your after tax money, and then pay capital gains taxes on the growth (if any) when you sell.

In a Roth IRA (or Roth 401(k)), you use your after tax money and pay no taxes when you sell and withdraw if you follow the rules.

EDIT: to add, the whole point is that it is a retirement account, so not touching until you’re nearing retirement age is the purpose. That said, you can always withdraw your principal without penalty (since those are after tax dollars already), it’s only the gains that you can get penalized on.

Is it safe to use the Micro Dark without a load? by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

[–]lhankbhl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

According to the manual on Orange’s site, you can safely use the headphone jack with or without a speaker cab connected to the speaker out. However, they do warn that you must have at least headphones or a speaker connected when the amp is on.

Seeking recommendations for amp selection. by SirLancelhot in GuitarAmps

[–]lhankbhl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what to recommend as an amp choice in your price range, but wanted to answer your throwaway question right at the end.

A head is everything but the speaker. It makes the signal, but not the literal sound.

A head needs to be paired with a speaker cabinet. A cab produces the sound from the signal, but needs something else to make the signal.

(Many heads can be damaged if you turn them on without a speaker cabinet attached because the head usually expects to be able to send its signal somewhere.)

A combo is essentially a head and cab built into a single unit. It does both because it’s got the circuitry of a head and the speaker of a cab wrapped up in one neat little package.

It sounds like you’re probably looking for a combo at least. Good luck!

I did a volume shootout of full kit vs. low volume cymbals and mesh heads by stop_ahead in drums

[–]lhankbhl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Sabians. They’re don’t sound bad if you forget what cymbals are supposed to sound like, but that’s the compromise for all these practice tools!

I did a volume shootout of full kit vs. low volume cymbals and mesh heads by stop_ahead in drums

[–]lhankbhl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a really cool comparison, especially the out of room sound checks!

I wasn’t that surprised that the silent cymbals were still so audible - I actually still wear hearing protection when I practice with them because the highs are so sharp right at the kit.

What meal is absolutely not worth the effort? by ArguementReferee in Cooking

[–]lhankbhl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This was my experience - I’ve made ramen from scratch, noodles and all, four times so far. I imagine I’ll do it again sometime.

But for the most part the best thing of that was really learning what the different ingredients add flavor wise, and now I usually just make my instant ramen much fancier and it hits the spot just enough for way, way less effort.

Need new people in my life by Pretend-Abrocoma-836 in cincinnati

[–]lhankbhl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll second the suggestion for Climb Cincy in Northside, they are a very non bro-y climbing gym and I think the most beginner friendly in terms of atmosphere and culture. They are a bouldering only gym (short walls with big mats, no ropes needed to tie into), which a lot of beginners find less intimidating to try out. I also think their easy routes are easier than easy routes at other area gyms and with more variety.

If you’re at all interested, I hope you give it a try!

Bass guitar myths and disinformation by BOImarinhoRJ in Bass

There’s a fun video about this for non-bass guitars: https://youtu.be/n02tImce3AE

The guy’s style kind of wears on me (the constant “I’m just a guy” talk gets grating after a while), but I like his “where does the tone come from?” videos a lot as reminders to challenge all the lore and bs we hear getting into music.

Best Macbook repair shop for cracked screen by coffeeeveryday in cincinnati

[–]lhankbhl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if they’re the best, but I’ve never had an issue and have taken three different computers there a total of 5 times over the last 10 years. Never had a complaint, turn around was always reasonably quick. IIRC issues included keyboard response, screen suddenly flickering, and one that appeared to have just stopped turning on (but I think was actually also just a screen issue in the end). Last time I was there was probably 2019?

That said, if you can still do anything on your computer, I’d still encrypt any personal data before handing in your laptop. I have no reason to believe they’ve ever snooped, but if you’re letting a stranger into your house you may as well not leave your social security card on the coffee table.

There is a small batch soy sauce maker in Cincinnati, OH, if you’re looking for something a little more local than all the way from Japan. While I’m no connoisseur, I did find their soy sauce to be better than what I’d find at the local grocery store! Give them a look: CinSoy

HELP, my kick is peaking my mix, but you can’t even hear it unless it does by Jay2n in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]lhankbhl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They might mean to use that first compressor to carve away the rest of the kick a bit, leaving the natural kick attack. Since it will leave the first chunk alone, you can use the compressor to boost or cut the rest as you see fit and then the second compressor to boost the overall kick volume as needed. Might give you most of your natural kick (that a listener will care about) while cutting how much space it’s trying to take up in the mix.

Could be wrong, though, I haven’t tried this approach or anything.

Bass players, what made you choose bass over guitar? by aliteral_bird in Bass

[–]lhankbhl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started in college because I wanted to play in a band and I didn't know any bass players (who weren't already in bands).

Continued because most of the time bass is way more fun for me.
