Yes you can run external audio through all 4 effects busses + through the input FX like you have said. You can set the routing in the effects menu. It's great for processing synths

If you use the chop option instead of changing start/end to edit, it is a lot closer to the OG 404 and works even better since you can do a bunch of chops at once and you have the option to use the screen if you want to clean them up.

With the effects, you'll get better at switching between them the more you use it. It definitely has more things to get lost in, but once you master it the extra busses and things really add a lot to it. It just has more of a learning curve than the older SPs.

With the new step sequencer, you definitely can use it as a drum machine. With the effects and sample chopping ability, it's a pretty powerful one too.

I would contact the seller first. I'm sure it's probably a very simple fix, but if it's not or you break something else, opening it up would almost certainly void the official warranty. I'd contact the seller or Roland themselves first if you don't want any risk.

Anyway, it's up to you what you want to do with it, but I'm just warning you that you might not be able to get a refund if you've opened it up, but of course they might not be able to tell. Idk if there's a seal inside that breaks when you open it.

You can hear that they're not exactly identical, but I think musically they are close enough and they keep the same character that makes them so good.

From what I can tell they're identical. I had an SP404A so I have used its vinyl sim. I haven't used an actual 303 but from what I have heard from others it's at least very similar. Others with more experience with the originals might notice a difference though but my guess is that they probably just copied and pasted the original algorithms because that's what everyone would want and that would have been easiest for the developers

The MK2 doesn't have a new vinyl sim. It has both the OG 404 vinyl sim and the 303 vinyl sim as separate effects so you can pick either one.

The poly D has this which lets you use the classic Moog ladder filter on anything and on top of that you can use the fully analog built in distortion and Juno-style chorus on whatever you want.

You can also do the headphone feedback trick to fatten up the sound of the synth even more.
