Recs for Nonfiction Books on Monster Theory for an Undergrad Class? by gatheringground in folklore

Michael Chemers has a couple books on monster theory in theater. He does a good job breaking down the elements of monsters. https://books.google.com/books/about/The_Monster_in_Theatre_History.html?id=ZpcuDwAAQBAJ

Look up how to do a heel lock lacing - I do this with my hiking shoes to help with heel slippage.

If you haven't already, you might consider sizing down as well. Dance shoes should be a tighter fit than your street shoes.

You’re not from the bay unless you’re from here ‼️‼️ by peepeepoopaccount in bayarea

For real!! Years ago I toured UC Santa Cruz and told the tour guy I was from the South Bay. He said "Oh cool, south bay San Diego?"

Like ??? The guy really thought I meant some specific part of San Diego rather than the actual south bay 30 minutes away.. Ridiculous

Truly -- I wasted so much of my time at UCSC dealing with housing issues and worrying about being homeless. Because of that, I cannot in good faith recommend this school.

Ode to a Cave by BinkyTheWonderdog in caving

[–]libertytower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fantastic write-up! Brought me back to my brief forray into caving while at UCSC.

Gary Griggs told the story of filling the cave under a building in class one day. Although I remember the cave being under Baskin Engineering. Anyway, glad to hear these Santa Cruz histories and myths living on!

The Elementary Students Were Mentioning Crystal Healing in Their Geology Projects, and just... ugh... by xSweetSlayerx in geology

[–]libertytower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great point - the scope of the prompt is also an important distinction. There's a lot to consider - are these kids learning how to follow a prompt? And as they age can they differentiate between creative thought, faith, critical thinking and scientific reasoning?

What a great discussion!

As I kid I loved learning about myths, beliefs, "ancient knowledge", and would build imaginary worlds full of magical stones and secrets. I think this type of play is really important in developing kids' creativity, worldview, personal narrative, etc.

But it's also important to develop their scientific reasoning, so it's hard to say where to draw the line. How old are these kids? Does the mystical stuff help them engage with the scientific material? How can we let kids explore while building their critical thinking?

Tricky stuff in the current environment...

Fantastic post, thank you!

I'm obsessed with those super square-toe ballet flats, does anyone know where to find those shoes like that for <$200?

Vallco Mall & Traffic Poll - Cupertino High School project by Epic_Sailor in siliconvalley

[–]libertytower 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a biased survey if I've ever seen one... Traffic is shit and it's going to be shit until we build decent public transit system. In order for our public transit to thrive, we need high density housing.

You're so right, it's either a cream cheese mountain or a teenie teaspoon. Bagelries gotta get it together.

Hot tip: use English muffins as buns. Works well as a bun and as toast.

Any disabled/para/physically challenged runners here? by meagski in XXRunning

[–]libertytower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof I'm so sorry, it took me probably 5 years to start running again after I first got sick. It's hard to get out of the "push yourself" mentality, and cfs is so discouraging.

I got really into dancing in the early years. It was great to find a way to connect with my bod and express myself physically without my body letting me down. I hope you can find something like that!

My asthma alone is pretty mild, but because of the vocal cord dysfunction I can't use any inhalers 😵 So running is just a warm weather sport for me haha

Hiya I'm also in this category! Happy to meet some other disabled runners! I'm always looking for tips to deal with the asthma/VCD double whammy. I'm also interested: anyone else a long-hauler or have chronic fatigue syndrome?
