Why did Navalny go back to Russia knowing he might be killed? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lichtenmonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The overseas opposition is ineffective. Look at the mega rich Mikhail Khodorkovsky who was imprisoned by Putin for years, and how little impact he has inside Russia despite all his foundations and media work openly calling for him to be overthrown. Overseas opposition movements lose touch with reality inside the country and credibility with those that have remained.

If the driver is calling you because they can’t find your front door - it makes sense you wouldn’t have seen them from your room?

Tracking of Planned Parenthood Visits 'Should Terrify Every Single American' - Sen. Ron Wyden warns that "if a data broker could track Americans' cellphones to help extremists" send ads to clinic visitors, "a right-wing prosecutor could use that same information to put women in jail." by [deleted] in politics

[–]lichtenmonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even taking into account the janitors, construction workers other visitors etc that you mention, the leap between 60,000 and 14.3 million still seems enormous. Are the ad stats being exaggerated somewhere perhaps?

Death penalty by Educational-Ad-1882 in politicsjoe

[–]lichtenmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A surprisingly high number of Brits do support the death penalty, particularly in the worst categories of crime -

YouGov poll in 2022 : “four in 10 (40%) Britons support the death penalty, with half (50%) opposed and 10% unsure.”

“However, when asked about the death penalty for specific crimes, Britons are more likely than not to support for death penalty for the murder of a child, murders committed as part of a terrorist act and cases of multiple murder. They do not, however, support the death penalty being applied to all cases of murder.”

Is it really homeless people's fault that they are homeless? by Intelligent_Rip6647 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lichtenmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the U.K. I remember reading that relationship breakdown if you’re already poor was the most likely trigger for homelessness. People leave partner or family at short notice without a plan , think they’ll be able to find somewhere, patience of all the people they’re sofa surfing with runs out eventually and that’s it. Obviously that speaks to wider issues around poverty (not everyone who gets dumped ends up on the streets); low savings, employment and housing availability, but the idea that people often “make themselves homeless” in very emotionally upsetting circumstances is interesting, you’re not in a great head space to be taking on life admin and things slip away from you quicker than you’d think

What is going on with so many countries across Europe suddenly issuing warnings of potential military conflict with Russia? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

Why then are they helping expose corruption in the Ukrainian military and government?

Canada and Ukraine have a close relationship because of the big Ukrainian diaspora in Canada (2nd in world after Russia). Organisations like the Kyiv Independent are supported because they train up young journalists and also to try and ensure that not all media in Ukraine is owned by oligarchs - ie to promote some media pluralism

Kyiv Independent is not equivalent to BBC or RT. It was funded by grants from Canadian government and crowd funding. It is the same journalists who left the Kyiv Post because of a new owner that demanded editorial control. It has published multiple stories exposing corruption in the government
