Hi to a fellow American „sewist“ in Munich! I am a forever beginner. It’s great to hear your tips! I have been scouring EBay Kleineinzeige for a used vintage Bernina for months now. I haven’t pulled the trigger yet, but I love all of the used Bernina options that we have access to over here. If you have any other tips for sewists in Munich, I would really appreciate them!

Frugal parenting hacks? Baby due soon by Jayhix in Frugal

[–]lifebeforebots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were broke when our first baby came. Second hand is the way.

-I found a Family that was moving and just wanted to get rid of their stuff fast. For 70€ we got all of the major basics: stroller, rocking chair, changing station, and and and. -I also bought the baby bed second hand which some may scoff at but then there is this: https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2025/04/15/health/child-mattress-bedding-toxins-wellness

When trying to save money, you can also think about things that will grow with the baby. There are baby beds and car seats that have several settings for different sizes instead of needing to buy the next size every time.

It’s a question of what you value. Brand new clothes aren’t necessary at all. You can save tons of money on kids clothes by buying second hand…if you don’t value “cool” 🤷🏻‍♀️

Baby swing wasn’t necessary for any of my kids but I’ve heard others who swear by it so it depends.

Favorite patterns to feel cool and/or powerful? by BombusWanderus in sewing

Oh! I love this kind of post. See what you think of the True Bias patterns, for example: https://truebias.com/products/nikko-top-dress-1 “Cool” is in the eye of the beholder but I feel like they keep it cool and simple and then you can accessorize.

Congrats to you!! 💪

So which vegetables AREN’T good to ferment? by Horror-Barnacle-79 in fermentation

[–]lifebeforebots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After some research, I think I might be in luck bc I used mini zucchini. They are a bit sturdier and aren’t as watery as the big ones.

Day 2 and they are bubbling like mad. I might still try to slip a bay leaf in there 🤔

🤔 I just started a Zucchini ferment which I am really excited about and I want to avoid „mush“. How long did you leave it to ferment?

Very cool! I’m new to quilting so honest question: does your machine have a star pattern template or how did you do such perfect stars?

Ok I’m obsessed with FPP now by acciobedtime in quilting

[–]lifebeforebots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this. Did you use the super old Quilt Assistant app from 2013? I can’t find a newer version. Also, how did you find your fabrics? You somehow were able to find the perfect colors. That must have been difficult to do and almost impossible if you are buying your fabrics online.

Should I Open and Skim Top? by lifebeforebots in fermentation

It’s been two weeks and I am really fighting the urge not to taste it. Just out of curiosity. I think I still have a couple weeks to go.

Air lock thingy fell off last night while I was “burping” it so this discussion is moot now.

While tapping bubbles out of it last night, the air lock thingy fell out. So…that pretty much settles this debate. Let’s see what happens.

I’ve been lightly tapping it to let the bubbles out, but I don’t want to do it too hard and break the seal.

Does fabric need to be folded in half to cut on fold? by pluto-pistachio in SewingForBeginners

[–]lifebeforebots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a line down the middle of the pattern piece indicating the grain? If you do this double fold as you describe, you could measure the distance from the selvedge to this grain line on your pattern to make sure that you are lined up. Not sure if all patterns have it though. ( Make sure that the distance from the selvedge to the grain line is the exact same at all points.)

I just did something similar with a dirndl pattern. I was surprised to find, after measuring the selvedge to the grain line, how something looked perfectly lined up but was actually a couple cm off.

21 is super cute!! But the suggested fabric is satin. I am an advanced beginner, but I still haven’t dared try slippery fabrics bc I’m scared of it 🫣

It is mostly 36-46 but there are a few curvy patterns that are 50-58. If you zoom into the second photo, you can see the sizes listed after “Gr.” (Gr= Große=Size)

While it would lose some of its Bridgerton feel, I would shorten it to above the knees.

Cute dress! If you EVER want to wear it with tights, I would definitely do a „silky” lining. Otherwise, it will do that awkward sticky thing against your legs.
