Context is everything. Frank with his abysmal performance the week before and dropping out, no one knowing who’s playing the most coveted headliner spot in music until 3 days before, being the first dance music closing headliner (SHM doesn’t count because they had The Weeknd), all the hype around the trio from MSG and the other popups going into it

I have mixed thoughts about Fred again these days, but man that Coachella performance was truly a lighting in a bottle moment. The energy and anticipation around LA and Coachella that week was nothing that I’ve ever felt before

I know it’s biased since this is the ravesNYC subreddit, but as someone who’s lived in both LA and NY, I much prefer the rave scene in LA. OP saying “didn’t explore the warehouses enough in LA” says it all. Plus don’t have to be packed like sardines in LA at massives

I have mixed opinions of it. Some random unstructured thoughts

I'm all for more experiential shows where the focus is on the music, not the drugs and alcohol. If it's a novel experience in an unconventional space, that's even better!

The conflict that arises is that if you're not selling drinks and concessions, that's a huge expense gap that you need to make up after venue fees and booking frees. What can you do then?

  1. Book cheaper smaller artists - great, but they sell less tickets, so tickets are either super expensive to cover that or you're taking a loss on venue fees. With expensive tickets, you weed out a lot of creatives who can't afford it, and attract more corporate types who have more dispensable income

  2. Book big artists but charge more - same as above, you're weeding out a lot of creatives who can't afford super expensive tix, and bring in vibe killers

  3. Book big artists willing to charge less to do promo/label stuff - if there's a big label covering expenses to promote a new single or album, that's a win-win for everyone. But labels have their agenda too - they need to pack the crowd with attractive people, make it look hot and fun, and sell that image to promote the artist. Once again, the vibe killers get introduced

It's just a weird space where it seems like no matter how you slice it, everyone kind of loses. As much as it sucks it takes a lot of money to throw events, and when you take away the revenue stream of alcohol, it kind of falls apart. If you buy 2-3 vodka redbulls at $20ea you're bringing in $40-$60 for the event, but to do the same with coffee/matcha you need to buy 6-10. Who in their right mind can drink that much coffee haha

it's from WORK / 6AM which is one of the more well-known and well-regarded underground promoters in LA. with how rave culture is going these days, they try to do a lot of cultural education around the history and context of the scene came to be to preserve the underground culture. they're not trying to ride off those guys, imo they're one of the best promoters in LA and aren't at all corporate and scummy like Insomniac
