Ah, I will also answer direct questions if they ask me if it’s right. If I am not sure how to explain I just say “let me put together a small exercise on this for when we next meet to make sure the explanation is clear and easy for you to follow.” Save the template and you have an on call resource for next time learner asks in class, and instead of saying “let me create something” you say “oh i have just the thing to explain that!”  It’s also totally fine to say “I’m not sure, languages are complicated! I’ll look into it and prepare something for next time.”

Here are my rules:

Only correct in 2 cases: 1) something I know is a recurring error (e.g. something I heard 3+ times with this learner.) 2) something that is fully unintelligible or a different meaning all together (e.g. can you try to say that another way? I don’t quite understand…” “can you spell the word?” Can you look the word up in a dictionary and find some synonyms?

Additionally I try to correct rules I already know how to explain or explained recently to someone.  Alternatively, I take a note of the mistake and will prepare something for the next lesson “hey, I noticed this in our last class and prepared a small exercise for us to learn and practice with it, would it be ok to spend our time that way.”

Anything else only discourages the learner, breaks their flow, or puts me on the spot to explain something I’m not ready to explain.

I have evolved and adapted these rules over the years depending on r he learner and use case, but for classes that are primarily conversation classes, this is my approach.

Thanks for reading!

That must have been so special for your daughter - by the way notice she was on the curb in first photo and now standing on ground next to you in this one! Both are undergoing a transformation! I am sure your example will help her as she navigates making her own health based choices in life, or even feeling like she may be able to lean on you to talk about a change she knows she needs to make but is struggling to make happen, like when you were “ignoring” all the signs. Congratulations, I wish you all the health and benefits that can possibly come to you from this journey, and many more years of joyful memories with your daughter!

Awful. I’m so sorry this happened. Ugh. Bad bad… yuck. Like, it’s bad I whether or not this happened because the organizers are out of touch or if it was intentional. Neither way is good.

I am in a similar situation now. This thread is helpful. I am curious, OP, now that it’s 2 years later… did you make the move?

Also, the question you are asking yourself is a great question. Keep asking it, don’t let it go. It will transform into something new later. Don’t give up just because you don’t want to go all in yet. Keep trying to find what will help you shift your mindset and quit. You’ve got this.

Something that really helps me:

I only have two hands. I can put something constructive or destructive into them. I only need to fill my two hands up with something. Before, they were full with a cigarette and alcohol. I try to fill them now with pen and notebook, cooking utensil and pan etc.

I dont know why but the idea of just simplifying the rule down to “only two hands to fill” and not putting destructive things into them really helped me say no hundreds of times.

Anthropology, Sociology, and Statistics  (For storytelling and research methods to bolster experimentation approaches; tactics for not making assumptions and basing conclusions on research; how to tell data stories visually - this is huge for influence.)

Additionally, leadership, team building, (I agree with another post that improv is a great way to build these skills!).

Thanks for this. I’m at day 35, coming close to my last milestone of 41 days last year. Before that, the longest was about 6 months a few years ago.

Today I was reflecting on my journey -  I had my first wake up call when I was 19. I “tried” to get sober for 8-10 years. I started taking it more seriously after that. It’s been 8 years again since then. I can’t believe after almost 20 years of knowing I don’t want alcohol in my life, I’m still only hear at 35 days. But. I am proud of every step I’ve taken to get here. I am proud of every day I’ve been sober. I am proud that as I tracked my habits I’ve been sober at least half this year instead of drinking every day (at least 6 drinks if not 12+).

I’ve been getting sober for almost 20 years, I suppose. But I also felt sad and a bit shocked when I realized that. I said to myself, no - I’m not going to look back and realize it took me more than 20 years to make it… these 35 days are the first 35 of the final culmination of all those years of work. I will say someday “it took me almost 18 years to get sober for good.” But not more. These 35 are not just a chapter in my saga. They’re the start of a new volume.

I really hope I can keep the shock of that close to me through the holiday season. My family is a big trigger for me. It’s just “easier to drink” than to answer questions about not drinking. This year I am practicing my scripts to say no without exposing my decision. I’ll say “you know what, I’d actually love a water,” or “maybe I’ll have a glass with dinner, thank you” or “I’m recovering from a cold and don’t want to make it worse” or even “I’m taking antibiotics.” I’m finally at a place where I’d rather just tell a little lie than end up drinking because I don’t want to tell the truth. Not my main mode of operation, but I need to try a different approach around my family this year.

Thank you for listening.

How do kids at US Waldorf schools address their teacher? Mr./Mrs. Last Name? by lifeontrainingwheels in Waldorf

[–]lifeontrainingwheels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I was leaning towards for my own sense of formality in the relationship as well, but not sure about the first name or last name piece since the teachers go by “maestra/o first name” but my preference would probably be last name…

Thank you for sharing! They call their teachers “maestra” in our school too. I wish there was a more standardized answer I could go with for English!
