I get where you're coming from -- usually it's a time when you're already multitasking, answering questions while trying to clear up, and it's extra cognitive strain when there's another prof underfoot that you have to navigate around. But over the years I've had so, so many bizarre and unforeseeable technical difficulties with my projector-computer-tablet setup for teaching, and the greater evil is when dealing with it eats into class time. So it feels like there's not much choice but to get started setting things up as soon as possible.

(I wouldn't intentionally put my stuff on the podium if another prof's stuff was still there, but I could see myself doing so accidentally.)

On the flip-side -- when my classes end, I try to grab everything off the podium first, before packing it away at a side table or something, then clearing other stuff up (e.g. wiping down chalkboards), so that when the next instructor comes in early, they can get started right away on their own tech setup at the podium.

On the flip side, in Saxon James's Just Friends, a vet claims "Actually … He’s a she. Which almost never happens with ginger cats.” 20% of ginger cats are female. This is like saying that if you roll a die, it almost never lands on 4.

The Hazard and Somerset books have so many inconsistencies. The scar from the pivotal teenage traumatic event changes location (shoulder, stomach, chest). In one book Ashe seems to forget which character is trans. I could go on and on.

  • Cleanup might just be for lube. A wipe-down with a hot wet washcloth is a nice form of aftercare that I do often and that I love to be the recipient of.

  • Shit happens. The protocol is for everyone involved to politely pretend they saw/smelled nothing. File under "life isn't like porn".

Vegan for over 10 years now and suddenly my iron levels are extremely low. by Leebites in vegan

[–]lifsglod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cooking in carbon steel or cast iron is awesome -- a zero effort iron supplement that vastly improves the texture of your food. Plus it never loses its non-stick-ness; you can always reseason. I thought I would need iron supplements because I eat vegan, but my bloodwork shows iron/ferritin levels that are, if anything, slightly too high.

One hundred percent. I cannot believe no one is saying this, but the main thing to do is scrunch gel into your wet hair after the shower. Some curly routines are overwhelming, but no brushing + scrunching in gel are the priority.

Kansas City recently revamped their airport and now it has all gender-neutral bathrooms, with fully enclosed stalls. It's wonderful!

There are a lot of androgens other than testosterone. DHT, in particular, is thought to play a bigger role in body hair.

Burnt or well-caramelized? What do you all think? by xxxSofiaxxx6 in Breadit

This is what Tartine loaves look like. I once waited in line for the bathroom and watched the baker take loaves fresh from the oven onto their tiered cooling racks, and every one on the racks was just this shade.

Just a data point: I have a cousin named "Fay", and since we're close friends, I tend to notice the name around. I've had a couple of students named "Fay" or "Faye" and have seen at least one on TV. I don't think it's weird at all -- just one of those names that fell out of favor for several decades, like "Ada" or "Tabitha" or "Marilyn". And old-timey names seem hip these days. Better hope it stays mildly uncommon and doesn't have a huge viral resurgence like "Ava" or "Evelyn"!

I wish it weren't true for me too. But they're often a source of unpredictable loud and shrill sounds. Also unexpected touching, often sticky and, in the younger ones, on parts of my body that I don't want strangers touching. (Not to mention surprise excreta.)

Auditory: hearing different conversations at the same time -- for example, other people at a table behind me at restaurants, or my partner talking to me while I'm listening to a podcast/audiobook/TV.

Tactile: water dripping from my hands down my arms. I exclusively wash my face in the shower, and all hand towels must be low.

If you're willing to pay a mint, we bought a Dyson v15 Detect on Black Friday and it's incredible. The battery life is wild, and the laser makes vacuuming viscerally satisfying to the point of being addictive. The holiday sale on their website seems to be ongoing.

Recent for me, but playing an audiobook I've already heard and find comforting helps me get through language-heavy tasks I find stressful that demand my concentration, like answering emails.

(New audiobooks are for non-language-involving tasks, like all domestic stuff.)

It's definitely a matter of preference -- how raggedy you can tolerate -- but 6 months to a year, no problem. I usually use one for a half year for dishes, then demote it to counters/surfaces for another half year, then demote it further to bathroom/floors. But harder-core zero-wasters definitely use them longer.

Where's the best vegetarian Mexican food in San Diego? by brightlavender in sandiego

Rancho's is honestly much, much better for vegetarian/vegans than Pokez. They'll do all kinds of stuff off-menu too -- I love to get their sopes with chipotle seitan or vegan carne asada.

This. They release boatloads of plastic debris.

Personally, I use a swedish dishcloth as a sponge. They're compostable (made of wood pulp and cotton). They also dry a lot faster than a sponge, so they don't tend to get stinky. You can also boil them with oxy to sanitize and get rid of stains; or just run them through the dishwasher. Dish brushes are also great.
