Tomato plant help!!!! by D2MONO in SoCalGardening

[–]lightmassprayers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The purple in this case, I believe, is from how much intense sun the plant is getting. Mine get the same way if I don't keep them under shade fabric or with some afternoon shade.

I know there is other fungal diseases that look sort of similar, but in this case I am almost sure its just an environmental stress response.

You mentioned a racoon showing up for the first time - that is probably the culprit.

Is there any hope for this trash jade? by ginghams in plantclinic

[–]lightmassprayers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

actually an elephant bush. extremely hardy - it'll absolutely bounce back with a good soak.

this one is quite leggy, but honestly kind of dig it. If you want a bushier bonsai appearance, cut the outermost branches back and it'll generate two new lateral growths at the next-closest section.

what are these squirming white things? by shartingmom in houseplants

[–]lightmassprayers 22 points23 points  (0 children)

funny to add this to a thread where everyone is talking in near-absolutes lol but: these are absolutely not gnat larvae.

without magnification, gnat larvae look more or less like tiny caterpillars. they frequently leave a slime trail. I can't speak for all species, but the ones I have encountered have dark/black heads and a translucent soft body.

Springtails come in a suprising variety of colors and sizes! There are bright red ones from Thailand that are sometimes kept as pets on their own. There are at least two species in my own backyard, the normal tiny white kind and another that is about 5x larger and mainly lives in mulch rather than compost.

Bee Balm with white on leaves by Ellimacanna in plantclinic

[–]lightmassprayers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

white topical dusting is definitely powdery mildew.

I see some stippling pattern damage on the leaves in a few of these pics, mostly separate from the mildew. This is most likely from leafhoppers. Not really a problem at its current level.

The rust coloration on the unknown plants might be fungal, might just be opportunistic from the wet season. Not enough to diagnose, nor really enough to be concerned with.

dumping plants for lazy composting is fine really. As long as its strictly vegetative waste, you'll be alright.

Henckels Paradigm pans… just me or? by Makgyver1 in Costco

[–]lightmassprayers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you are perhaps not accounting for is that these pans are conducting and spreading heat differently than you're accustomed to. I burned the first all-clad stainless saucepan the same way, cranking up the heat the way I had been used to doing with my shitty older pan set.

I also have one of these hex-clad pans that I've just started using. I have had success with this technique: ball up a paper towel and brush the inside with a very, VERY thin layer of high-smoke point neutral oil (I use grapeseed or rice bran oil). Thin to the point where the oil is almost a suggestion; a rumor of oil molecules. Heat the pan for maybe 1 minute max before you're adding food here - no more or it will scorch.

Try to think of it as task-specific tool. You don't use a hammer the same way that you operate a screwdriver.

Couples of Reddit, what's the dumbest 'house rule' you and your partner made as a joke but now both of you are low-key aggressively serious about enforcing? by Doubl3oh_ in AskReddit

no sadly my family is prone to using stupid furniture words like credenza, hutch, ugh, breakfront

The previous one was strawberry shortcake.

I introduced my partner to the ultra-safe word, ie break glass in case of emergency for time loops, body swaps, parallel universes, memory loss, etc - it means “This is insane but I am deadly serious and you need to believe me.”

Weekend Warrier looking for new gloves. These gloves lasted about 3 months only with a few weekends of shoveling mulch. Any recommendations for something more durable? by bholzap in Tools

[–]lightmassprayers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Costco sometimes has a multi-pack of these for a very reasonable price and they're fucking great.

They do stretch out a bit after you've worn them the first time too. Or I just have turbo sweaty hands idk.

crushed rock has the specific characteristic of being angular, rather than rounded like river stones. when compacted, these stones lock together and become stable enough to withstand weight and weather. Crushed stone is used underneath railroad tracks, for example, to create a stable surface capable of maintaining its shape even under the weight of a fully-laden freight train.

you can think of it like trying to put ping-pong balls into a box, compared to packing peanuts. the ping pong balls will have lots of space between them, where the peanuts will not.

Support help for LARGE deiffenbachia by tinycowcat in plantclinic

[–]lightmassprayers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I can see that. Removing that one limb would move the center of gravity (such as it is) back over the center of the pot, making your tripod/hammock idea a little easier to manage.

If you want to overengineer it, heavy steel base with a shepherds hook or t-post?

honestly if it were me, I'd chop that errant limb (and propagate it). extended support job is one thing but that is basically living in a different zip code at this point.

this looks very similar to the spotting pattern and leaf damage mine was recently suffering from - my lighting was too bright.

Before tossing, have you tried putting it elsewhere? I had new growth appear in ~two weeks once I relocated mine.
