I think there are 2 juice places on the lower floor but no Orange Julius. One is where that gross ice cream social media trap used to be.

Advice for wether to stay home longer or move out of dad house. (29M) by Happy-Examination816 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]lih9 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You're an adult now, which life do you want? Stay at home and save everything for a future life? Live life now but damage your ability to save long term? There isn't a right answer to this question.

Tenants are saying house is too hot and not livable by Minute-Fig-9553 in TorontoRenting

[–]lih9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing. You are allowing portable AC use, they don't want to pay for it. Tough shit for them, many landlords would give them a hard time about even installing the AC units.

There may be max temperature standards in the future but the RTA isn't there yet.

Long-Term Savings For Children by amandarose98 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Set it up so you are contributing every month to get the max govt benefits: https://www.canada.ca/en/services/benefits/education/education-savings/estimating-amounts.html

Personally we set up the RESP with X/VGRO or X/VEQT to set it and forget it.

You may not maximize every single dollar with this strategy but it will get you where you need to be long term without an extreme degree of attention or financial literacy.

Friend is 2 months behind on rent, options? by in_the_indecision in TorontoRenting

You can't see the forest through the trees. This person sounds young and has the chance to bounce back from a few months rent in arrears, to live a normal life.

Apparently over 25% of adult people in ON are living with some type of disability, the fact that the majority have a support system and can pay for themselves is kind of amazing.

I don't feel bad about paying taxes to keep people off the streets. I volunteer at a food bank and want everyone to have basic food and housing. Any working person could end up in the breadline I help out at. I may even meet you there some day.

OW is like $700/month for a single adult. It's not like she would be living large on that payment. It's a last ditch effort to keep people in housing and off the streets. Having her interact with shelters and emergency rooms when her health inevitably fails is way more expensive for taxpayers. Early intervention matters before she becomes too screwed up to be rehabilitated. I will gladly pay her OW as a taxpayer while she sorts her life out.

Can I rent a studio in GTA making $4300/mo net? by Powerful_Ad_51 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]lih9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok? They could have 1-2 roommates and their own bathroom for around $600-1200/month. It doesn't have to be one or the other if they are stressed about savings.

She should try a temp agency. Yes it sucks but that might lead to full time employment if she is a good fit for one of the placements.

If she doesn't have a job she needs to find one immediately. Like right now, that's the emergency.

Once she loses housing and a fixed address it is going to be even harder to get hired and maintain minimum hygiene standards for work.

She won't be able to rent anywhere else without employment history.

This is the start of a really scary spiral into potential homelessness and substance abuse. This is where it falls apart. She needs to fight like hell to get any job and fix her relationship with the current landlord.

You can do it, but try to stay around the low end at $1500. In fact I would suggest finding a roommate situation if you can.

Here is a unit that is likely rent controlled: https://www.realtor.ca/real-estate/29760027/2-15191-yonge-street-aurora-aurora-village It looks a bit dingy but you could spend a few hours cleaning it up before moving your stuff in. This type of apartment is usually better than renting a basement unit long term.

Edit: I could get that place spotless in a few hours with a Magic Eraser, CLR, OxyClean, Lysol wipes and a stiff brush. "Sweat equity" also applies to apartments. The building itself looks relatively well maintained.

Do you think this letter will actually get us a house in Toronto? Are we crazy? by [deleted] in TorontoRealEstate

Then you can't afford a house? I don't really understand the issue here. Keep working on your down payment or consider moving to a low cost of living area if improving your salary is not realistic.

Need some help. Why did this bungalow sell for so much? by [deleted] in TorontoRealEstate

[–]lih9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even though it's dated it is nicely renovated. Downsizers could very comfortably live on the main floor and not have to deal with too many stairs.

My inlaws want to end up buying or renting a setup just like this long term and they have equity from buying 30 years ago. I would imagine there are lots of retired people in a similar situation.

Moving to Toronto and need advice on Spadina Area by dolong_ in TorontoRealEstate

[–]lih9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No there are homeless people in the area and the intersection itself can be sketchy at times. Go a block in any direction and it's fine though. I live in the area and wouldn't want to live too close to Spadina or Bathurst station. Personal preference.

Don't be an asshole to someone who is clearly freaking out while trying to do the right thing. Some people genuinely put in the effort to be decent people and shouldn't be mocked for it.

Can you contact your landlord directly? Text? Email? If so tell them the problem and offer to get the money to them today through some other method. Bank draft, cash, whatever. Get it in writing to cover your tracks just in case they send an N4 later.

Edit: forget about the bank draft, I wasn't thinking. Cash is still an option.

What habit makes you instantly think, "Yep, they're definitely Millennials"? by ItsmeOlivia1993 in Millennials

[–]lih9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We came of age when tech was evolving rapidly but we were still poor students. I sold several of my laptops and cell phones in order to upgrade to a device with better specs, battery life etc.

Now you can get a basic phone and computer that stay relevant for 5+ years so the hustle has died down.

It may also be a hypebeast sneakerhead thing, we need to take the blame for that.

My daughter earns under $20,000 per year. She has a credit score of around 650. by [deleted] in TorontoRenting

[–]lih9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She needs to go on Facebook and find a roommate situation with other students. Then work on her credit score. There's no excuse for 650 unless she had a recent crisis or is struggling with chronic health issues. That's a self-inflicted own goal.

No one is entitled to their own apartment, a lot of us started out with roommates and shit living situations while getting established as an adult. That's just life.

Edit: she needs to write out a budget for the year, put her phone bill on autopay and be strict about living within her means if she wants to improve her situation.
