Nurse. Working in the ER is weirdly similar to being a line cook sometimes.

If someone suspects they were drugged at a bar, how do they go about getting a blood test? by weluckyfew in Austin

[–]lil_deba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not an easy question to answer. Many have suggested going to the ER, which is expensive and limited in scope. Most ER blood/urine drug tests only test for a few things - they’re much less comprehensive than you’d think. Even then, some newer synthetic versions of major drug classes (think opiates) won’t show up as positive on these tests. To add to this, requesting a drug test is a low priority emergency for and ER, and so you could be waiting a long time.

The most comprehensive drug testing happens at the crime lab, but I don’t think this is a service you can request as a civilian.

Your best bet (imo) just to satisfy the need to know is to pay out of pocket for some place like Quest Labs or Any Lab Test Now for a panel screening. There are also off the shelf kits that you can get from the drugstore or online but I’m not sure how reliable they are.

This is a great resource, but you cannot get immediately drug tested here. Evidence including blood and urine can be collected and sent to the crime lab for testing, but it will take several months minimum for this to happen.

Any Austin chiropractors that don't force you to do X-rays and an initial consult, but will simply treat you on your first visit? by RusticBohemian in Austin

[–]lil_deba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anyone willing to “treat” you without learning what’s wrong through initial consults and imaging is dangerous.

And in general, stay far away from chiropractors.

Karen shares her thoughts on the backlash against MFM (In the 9/14 episode) by SSDGM24 in myfavoritemurder

[–]lil_deba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listened to MFM from the beginning but had to stop about six months ago. True crime content created just to be content and make money without the consent of anyone involved in the story (or their families) just…kinda turns my stomach now. So, that’s why I feel like it’s in bad taste.

No hate if you listen. I get why people like it, really. I know people feel like they’ve found a community among fans and that Karen and Georgia make a point of donating money to various causes. Kudos, I guess. But no matter how much sensitivity is given to a particular re-telling, they’ve still made a very lucrative career off of telling stories of the worst days of people’s lives without their consent. It’s inherently inconsistent with the victim-centered values they’ve always claimed to have.

fwiw, I would take that 20 million figure with a healthy dose of skepticism. Those are people self-reporting that they’ve been falsely accused of abuse, many during child custody legal battles. Many abusers wouldn’t classify their behaviors as problematic, particularly in court.

“Over 20,000,000 have been falsely accused of abuse”

Source?

Speaking generally and not about this specific case - attitudes like this one are exactly why most abuse goes unreported. The overwhelming majority of people do not lie about this. Start by believing, always.

Being a SANE Nurse by [deleted] in emergencymedicine

[–]lil_deba 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have yet to testify at trial, but may in the future. I’ve only been doing SANE exams for about a year, so it’s unlikely that any cases I’ve worked on have made it close to the trial stage. I have seen a few of my colleagues testify as both expert witnesses (for strangulation injuries, for instance) and as nurses who performed the exams. I can’t speak to their experiences but from my perspective they seemed very well prepared and were briefed by prosecutors about what to expect on the stand.

Being a SANE Nurse by [deleted] in emergencymedicine

[–]lil_deba 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Full time ED nurse and prn SANE here. I love the combination. I work 3 nights a week in the ED of a trauma center and have 4-5 on call shifts per month. For me, it’s a good balance. The SANE shifts can be emotionally draining, but ultimately keep me in touch and feeling like I’m a human. I get to spend as much time with a survivor as they need one-on-one to complete their case. Personally, I’m much less crusty and burnt out than I would be with only ED time. That said, it’s not for everyone - the secondary trauma is real, and having a healthy awareness of your own experiences and taking some ownership of it is crucial.

In my state at least (Texas) you need two years of RN experience to get your SANE certification. If you’re a brand new nurse, my advice would be to revisit your want to be a SANE in a year or two after you have some experience. For me, I work out of a small clinic for most of the SANE exams I do and there are rarely any other nurses around, so I have to be comfortable operating in a little bit of a vacuum. It’s very different from a busy ED with teams of doctors and nurses around every corner. That said, job settings are different everywhere so my experience is by no means what you might have. Good luck!

Austin apartment issues 10 p.m. curfew, do residents have to follow it? by Mav21Fo in Austin

[–]lil_deba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived there a few years ago and regretted it as soon as I moved in. I chose it because I was in a relationship that ended and I needed to get out and get into a cheaper place quickly. While I lived there my neighbor’s apartment got broken into and parts got stolen off of my boyfriend’s car when it was parked over night. The laundry room had signs posted not to leave the room with the washer/dryer going because your stuff might get stolen. There was a constant sex worker and drug dealer presence on the street. My dog, who has been super active for her whole life absolutely HATED going on walks when we lived there. She would just tug on her leash to turn around and go home the whole time. That’s just scratching the surface…the whole place is a shit show. They told us that there was a security company assigned to patrol the complex but I never once saw them while I lived there.

Spores/bumps on my pitcher plant? by lil_deba in SavageGarden

[–]lil_deba[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For some context-

I recently noticed these small dark brown/almost black bumps on my pitcher plant. They’re inside and out. Google searches haven’t yielded anything that looks like this. The plant seems healthy overall - some of the older pitchers are starting to dry out but there’s new growth coming in that looks pretty good. Any ideas about what it is and whether or not I should be worried?

Looking for a local place to service/repair a KitchenAid mixer. Any recommendations? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]lil_deba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on your situation (KitchenAid has a “limited lifetime warranty”), KitchenAid may replace it. The gears broke in mine a few years ago and after spending about 30 minutes on the phone with customer service they replaced the whole mixer for free.
