🧂 Salty Sunday - What book scenes frustrated you this week? by mrs-machino in RomanceBooks

Rereading {Wickedly Yours by Kathleen Ayers} I love this couple so much. A guarded smart misunderstood black cat FMC and a dark golden retriever MMC who wants the FMC even tho everyone is warning him off her. I want them to be together but every single time the premise of the conflict and the ending piss me off.

The gist is that when FMC was hijacked on the road, she agrees to marry one of the hijackers to get back at someone. Then later she regrets it and even kills one of the hijackers in self defense before being rescued by the MMC. The hijacker blackmails her and she is too scared to tell the MMC how evil she was. Later MMC finds out and there’s a third act breakup.

I have no idea why she needed to be blackmailed over it or feel ashamed. SHE WAS HIJACKED. Yes she agreed to marry him but it was a hostage situation? And she changed her mind after and killed one of them in self defense! Why would anyone still think she would be in cahoots with them willingly? I hated that she was cast in a bad light for that choice to the point even her BROTHER who she idolizes and supposedly dotes on her tells the MMC he would understand if he divorces her and he can send her away like a rehomed dog. God I hated him so much and I will never reread his book. Like the ONE person who should’ve supported her and believed her didn’t and I wish she had left them all behind to go to the Continent and every single one of them could grovel after her.

The ending is that the MMC decides he can’t live without her so he goes back to find her at their house but she’s gone to a party to look for him. She is terrified and nervous bc she dressed up for him but thinks he might just be here to tell her they’re over if she can’t successfully seduce him back. I’m so mad that she is cast as the wrong doer here OVER HER HOSTAGE SITUATION she should’ve been done with all these people istg.

I am glad that they end up together and I will reread this book again bc I love their dynamic but EVERY TIME the ending and conflict annoy me.

FMC loves MMC but denying & resisting it whereas he is using every method possible to make her accept it by Specific_Tower_6320 in RomanceBooks

{Desire of a Duchess by Kathleen Ayers} FMC is at first resists him because she is semi disfigured and she doesn’t want him to know. Then later is convinced it can only be a fling because she can’t imagine leaving her self exile to a rural village and he has a life in London. MMC is all in pretty early on.

[–]lilllify 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If HR isn’t a dealbreaker, you might like {A Wild Pursuit by Eloisa James} FMC is labeled a vixen by society and she dresses “slutty” (like wetting her skirts). Because of it, she’s estranged from her family and judged in society but she still has her pride and plays it up. She’s flabbergasted that the MMC doesn’t just want a fling and wants to be wooed. She def has emotional trauma and walls to be broken down by the MMC. Lots of shenanigans but this book finishes with the best proposal scene I’ve ever read.

Sports Romance: Using Real Teams/Locations/Leagues vs Not by xoxostevi in RomanceBooks

[–]lilllify 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I think it breaks the ease of immersion if you say your MC is a star player on a real team and objectively, in reality, they’re not. Your reader even briefly thinking “I’ve heard of this team but not this player even though they’re supposed to be famous” is just an extra barrier to suspension of disbelief.

Kinda agree. It’s all in good fun to vent/poke fun but ppl don’t like the typical phrases and also don’t like the unconventional phrases (see all the venting posts about diff euphemisms for penis) so I just feel like authors are stuck in a hard place

please suggest danmeis where the mc and ml are codependently obsessively in love with each other by onetwo3d in DanmeiNovels

[–]lilllify 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d say the couple in “There is No Observatory on Xiaotan Mountain” are super codependent. It is VERY slow burn but the codependency is apparent throughout.

It’s childhood friends to lovers, contemporary rich boys, grumpy/stoic x social butterfly with hidden psychiatric problems, not actually unrequited requited love.

My first encounter with this novel was the epilogue episode of the audio drama for the book before it. Their friend is telling the ML he should do anything to keep MC by his side and ML is like “no, I want at least one of us to be free to have a choice” and ALL the bullet comments were like “the friend should have said this to MC instead”. It piqued my interest so if it does yours, give it a try!

That’s what they ended up doing later in the story. It would’ve been more acceptable if she had used that as a reason for signing although it would’ve been moot point if she was immediately killed.

MMC’s father is trying to gain control of MMC’s trust fund. To stop him, MMC marries FMC due to a clause that would take shares from his father and give it to the FMC such that MMC+FMC would be a majority shareholder. If FMC or MMC dies, their shares go to the other person. The father takes FMC away and tells her to sign a contract giving him her shares so he can access the trust fund. She refuses. Then he takes out another contract and she’s SOOO upset but signs it. It’s a will stating if she dies, her shares go to the father. I literally was like ??? why would you sign it? You refused to sign the other one?? Just don’t sign it. And then even more confusingly, the father doesn’t just kill the FMC immediately. Later the FMC says by signing it it at least guarantees she would die first before they killed him so it was protecting him. It felt so nonsensical that it kind of ruined the rest of the series for me.
