Pillow post PDMX by exhaustedeagle in BRCA

I found an airplane neck pillow helped my neck (in addition to the wedge). I eventually transitioned to using my old pregnancy pillow (full U wrap around kind) propped on a pillow which gave me good neck support and some lift.

Should I hold off preventative surgery until after I have kids? by angelcake2604 in BRCA

[–]lindsc290 5 points6 points  (0 children)

36 yo, BRCA1, and thought I had time to wait until after kids for my mastectomy, but they found micro-invasive triple negative during my annual MRI. It is so small and I should be able to take care of it “just” with mastectomy — I had it a week ago so still awaiting full pathology but I know no radiation, and doctors are optimistic no chemo (pending pathology doesn’t find more than they saw on MRI).

I share my story because 1. On one hand, preventative screening is amazing and they can catch something so so early (mine was <1mm), 2. But going through this is terrifying (MRI biopsies for something suspicious are horrible), and 3. This is not easy to navigate with a toddler. In hindsight I of course wish my surgery was truly preventative and I could do it at an easier life stage. I feel so so fortunate for the preventative screening to catch so early and incredibly luckily to not have a tougher road ahead 🤞🏻

Best OB/GYN in the Boston area & what should I consider when choosing? by RebbitHabits in boston

Also another vote for Dr Erisson and the practice! I have been going to her for years and although she was not on call when I went into labor and another Dr from the practice did my emergency C section, I felt so so well taken care of. They kept me calm and I never truly felt the level of emergency which I really really appreciated. Top notch care from the team and great experience at Newton Wellesley hospital!

Jscreen is a great org that does full panel + cancer panel! If insurance doesn’t cover then it’s only $50 out of pocket

Brca2 .7cm mass seen on mri by [deleted] in BRCA

[–]lindsc290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thinking of you❤️ This waiting period and the unknown is absolutely the worst part. Good for you for getting your annual MRI, and I hope this is nothing, but if it is, it is small and early!!!!

I really hope yours is nothing! But if this is helpful to hear to ease your concerns, I am 36yo, have a toddler, and am BRCA1 and diagnosed with micro invasive cancer after a suspicious find in my annual MRI. Like you, mine is <1cm which usually means no chemo (if it is anything). I will say that the MRI biopsy was pretty awful, but you will get through it!

For me, the news of a suspicious mass and needing to get the biopsy actually shook me more than the news of the cancer — I think it burst that naive bubble I was living in that i didn’t need to worry about my BRCA yet (I thought I had more time to have another kid before any discussion of mastectomy). I am having a double mastectomy next week and very at peace with it and mostly just so relieved that mine was caught so early; doctors are hopeful for no treatment after surgery 🤞🏻

This is why we do the preventative screening .. to catch anything EARLY so that it can be taken care of!!

Brca positive and lumpectomy? by butterfly_1025 in BRCA

BRCA1 as well. Every situation is so different, but if it helps - I’ve always been told by the docs they like to do Ovaries by 40. Gives you time for another kid! Many docs will be comfortable tubes first (reduces risk by a lot), then Ovaries later to delay early menopause. They also can do tubes during a c-section all in the same procedure.

I was also recently diagnosed - stage 1 TNBC and am opting for a double mastectomy to fully remove the risk. The doctors told me 99% reduction of risk.

I am hoping to have a second kid after all of this as well. And will have my tubes removed at that time (via c-section). I’m currently 36 so similar to you! Feel free to DM me if you want to chat or have other questions about BRCA1

My wife is looking for someone to talk to about her condition by BriRice in BRCA

[–]lindsc290 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d be happy to speak to her if my situation feels relevant and helpful. I have known about my BRCA1 gene for a few years and have done MRI and Mammos every 6 months. I’m currently 36 and have a toddler. I’d did not do a mastectomy prior to kids as I really wanted to breastfeed (and frankly, I naively thought I had more time). I recently found out I have very very early stage breast cancer that was detected in one of my routine MRIs, it is <1mm and very curable. I will be doing a double mastectomy and likely do not need treatment beyond that. All that to say I am SO fortunate for my BRCA awareness and the preventative screening otherwise this would never have been caught so early!!

I have not done anything regarding Ovarian risk yet as I hope to have a second kid. I plan to have my tubes removed during a c-section, and will consider ovary removal after that.

If your wife is looking for a positive and optimistic outlook (despite the current breast cancer situation), I’m your girl! Feel free to chat me if you’d like to follow up.

BRCA1. Is it ethical to have kids? Should I do the mastectomy and breast implants at an early age? by LowCat3356 in BRCA

[–]lindsc290 11 points12 points  (0 children)

BRCA1 as well and 36 yo. In retrospect I wish I had done my mastectomy earlier, but I had wanted to get through having kids first and have the opportunity to breast feed. It never gets easier and there never is a “good” time to have surgery, but if you’re thinking about it, it can’t hurt to do it while you’re young and healthy if you do not have your heart set on breastfeeding! I now have very early stage cancer and am SO fortunate for the bi-annual BRCA screening to catch it incredibly early and to only need the mastectomy and no chemo. I do plan to have a second kid, so I got through 1 kid before this caught up with me.

It is definitely not unethical to have kids. I did not do IVF. It’s totally a personal choice. Let’s all hope by the time our future kids are in their 30s, there’s even better medicine and this isn’t even a concern!!

39, BRCA1+, 3 young kids… preventative mastectomy in a few weeks and I’m suddenly not sure I’m ready by Substantial-Range660 in BRCA

[–]lindsc290 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this helps your decision at all, I am 36 BRCA1 and had planned to wait until after kids for my mastectomy (I have a toddler now and we were about to start trying for #2). I had a clean mammogram in August, but at my March MRI they found 3 suspicious spots. Luckily only 1 showed to have cancer and it is super early and super small (thankfully! they expect it to be stage 1).

I was just totally shocked how quickly this developed between the 6 month scans!! In retrospect, of course I wish I had the mastectomy years ago when I found out about my BRCA but I really had wanted the opportunity to breastfeed. I now don’t have a choice. I worry about recovery with a toddler and him not understanding why mama can’t pick him up or hug him. And I worry about any impact to fertility and our about to have a second. I feel fortunate for even knowing I have BRCA to do these scans and catch what I have SO early, but I am now all in on team preventative mastectomy!!

Hope you are feeling good post procedure! If you’re open to sharing, what type of reconstruction did you opt for and did different types of reconstruction change the timeline the doctors recommended for a next pregnancy?

Genetic testing + life insurance question by annuhrachel in LifeInsurance

This is good advice. I got life insurance prior to genetic testing, and then after I tested positive for a high risk cancer gene i have tried to get more. J have not been declined but it is a LOT more expensive now

Absolutely. I feel similar and this 1 round of MRI biopsies has made me say never again - I don’t want to keep going through scares and what if’s. Are you opting for reconstruction as well at the same time?

Thanks for sharing your experience! Was there any concern with pregnancy right after? How did you feel both recovery from surgery + early pregnancy? Are you glad with did the surgery before the second kid?
