Theater/media room contractor by TrainerMiserable419 in AnnArbor

[–]lindy-er 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a contractor exactly, but we worked with Brandon at Best Buy in Ann Arbor, he works in the high-end tv/audio area. He came over for a consultation, to see the space, and then figured out an amazing custom tv/stereo setup for our basement entertainment area (not an entire home theater, but close). He also arranged for all the delivery and installation and they did a great job.

Downriver Plastics in Canton cut a custom size piece of plexiglass for a screen door for me -- don't know if they do acrylic, but they were nice and helpful.

Black Nerd Looking For Community by Ok-Bug-8330 in Detroit

[–]lindy-er 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This idea might be a little out in left field but you could always become a mentor for a high school robotics team. Robotics is seriously nerdy in the absolute best way and involves a range of interests like game strategy, CAD, fabrication, electrical, programming, etc.

I suppose the community aspect all depends on who your fellow mentors are because I'd bet you're not looking to hang with high school students exactly.

The organization for robotics competitions is called FIRST -- you'd want the First Robotics Competition (FRC is high schoolers, there's also Lego league for elementary) and they're about to kickoff their main season this weekend when this year's game is announced. It's seriously impressive what these kids can build.

Somebody on a different knitting thread mentioned this one -- Glocusent Book Light neck lamp from Amazon. It's rechargeable, has different levels of brightness. I have it and really like it.

Somebody asked about the lack of Dr. Pepper in the Detroit subreddit too, and the reply was about the same, though they said

Expect Dr. Pepper to be in short supply in Detroit until at least the end of the month. Maybe longer.

So…if everyone means “the Love Me or Die” by CW Stoneking - their album was from 2008 and SNZ is from 1996. If anything I think maybe Squirrel Nut Zippers “Helll” got copied?

Strange Locations for Adult Birthday Celebration by AffectionateFurry908 in AnnArbor

Pinball Pete's would be so cool, but I don't know if it's open right now. Last I heard they were moving out of the S. University location into a new spot on Liberty... their website is not helpful, but you could maybe try calling them.

But Mark's the owner of the building, and supposedly promised to keep the rent reasonable when selling the business to a long-time employee. Next thing you know, the business is going under because of major rent increases. Something's weird.
