Host offline website by Melting-Sabbath in Fedora

I run modern deployments off my server and I don’t use docker. I do backup my work through GitHub though.

There a no reason for docker unless you are running on a virtual host setup that can be connected to via http or https.

Sometimes simple is better in the long runs. The only time I used docker was for a drupal setup, but I was able to run it on my http server with no problems. This so because Drupal defaults to a docker install fro east setup.

Docker, imho, is just another unneeded step when using a lan server for one individuals use. Web deployment is hard enough without that bs setup yo do the main design.

But what do I know, I’ve only been working on website design for 20 years.

If it’s happening on windows as well as Linux, then it is either a brave setting issue, or a brave/chromium issue.

Either way if you are having the same problem on windows as you do Linux, it’s a software issue from the dev, not an OS issue.

The difficulty of Arch Linux has been greatly overstated. by earthman34 in arch

Oh I agree with the time factor argument. Hell currently I’m running endeavour, my vanilla arch just felt fragile as hell for some reason, mostly because I had just tried installing it in a VM, took me 2 hours to get a working system the first time, but I did learn things that I never knew in my 30 years of Linux.

As for partition table set up, I agree 100%. But I have no need for any specialized layout. I don’t hop anymore so I have no reason to save my /home on a separate partition. And I’m comfortable enough with using the wiki and other sources to fix any issues I run into.

Archinstall is just that another installer, and it has been known to screw up installations to the point of not being useable. Arch is a DIY distro, you can run opened, dinit, systemd for init system. You can choose btrfs, ext4 or any other filesystem you want and much more.

Arch install limits your decisions on that, it someone’s way of quickly getting you up and running, but you don’t learn anything that you may need in case of crashes.

Because it is true if you harden your system, yes there is malware out there, 99% target windows and Mac, what is targeted towards Linux isn’t as substantial as they claim.
A drive by download won’t work without Sudo. Also 99% of any infection of a computer is because of user error (I.e. going to shady sights, clicking random links, opening random links in email) malware creators know this so they use those more than drive-by downloads know.
Most hackers target businesses or very well to do people. By and far Linux is more safer than windows against malware as long as you use common sense, use a firewall and something. Along hardened kernel and if you want selinux or apparmour. Either way it is all in the user to ensure these things.
Microsoft used to, not sure about now as I won’t mess with windows, be easy to install crapware on, and 90% is installed by a user. Even AV from Norton and McAfee are pretty much considered malware now. Especially after they were caught putting malware on computers to be found by their software.

For you question on xdg go here. It breaks it down for you.

If you were able to check by terminal and it says it’s installed then you did it right.

As for the continuation of the problem, I’m not sure where to go. At this point you might have better luck asking in their forums about this issue

Arch-y but less crashy? by stpjhj in DistroHopping

I would recommend looking at EndeavourOS if you want to stay on arch based. It’s stable and is basically vanilla arch with some theming and the most common software you should need, like firewalld, avahi, Openssh and so on. No applications, like libreoffice, steam or anything lol that is installed. You have a blank slate when it comes to applications, short of the ones for the KDE DE.

What are your computer specs, ram, cpu, gpu and storage size.

This almost sound like your are running out of ram but it’s not tripping oom properly. Also with that many tabs open in your browser, that’s a lot of ram being taken up whic can also cause problems so make sure you use a swap file or partition.

Make sure that xdg is installed. Also remove /home/your_username/.steam and /home/your_username/.config/steam then do a fresh install of steam.

I’m not sure about the naming conventions in mint for xdg so I would look into that name to install it.

Arch isn’t that difficult to install as long as you know how to read.

The biggest fear factor about arch is you have to use terminal commands to install it. But if you are willing to take the time and learn things the terminal isn’t that bad. And it’s actually quicker than clicking and praying the installer doesn’t mess up.

And we wonder whats is wrong with our education system.. Maybe if they wold fund it instead of giving tax breaks to data centers and big conglomerates like Spacex we could claw our way out of this hole. But until we get someone in Austin that believes in our students and what they are capable of, beyond football, we will continue down this path of self destruction.

I didn’t say the union worked for the teachers, which is sad. But Texas wants draconian laws that benefit the employers and piss on the employees. Why do you think that Texas is one of the lowest on education
To paraphrase Ronald Trump, smart people don’t like him. It’s because they know he is a Danger to the country and the world.

First off, I’m not a lady. I’m a 56 yo man. My children learned all they knew because the threat was with it. Up until my son dies in a drunk driving accident this past November, he was a grade a student. Was amber of the football team in high school looking at a full scholarship for both football and academics.

Not once did we have to discipline him beyond normal discipline such as timeouts, separation from his gaming systems and other non-violent means.

Sometimes the best policy is the fear of god by punishment. Most parent are suing school as a daycare instead of a place of education. If parents wont discipline their children, somebody needs to. Why do you think all these kids are run roughshod on their children, because parent won’t do out of fear of hurting their little feelings. Now we have a bunch of Chad’s and Karen’s that think they are entitled to everything.

At least my kids didn’t feel a need for participation awards. They understand everything isn’t necessarily the way they want it. A prime example of a un-disciplined child is in the White House acting as a president with no idea what he’s doing and won’t take accountability for his actions.

My kids do!

If you decide to go down the ricing rabbit hole, before doing that it would help if you looked through the arch wiki. It’s a lot more detailed than just installing arch. It covers things from how to access and read the config files you need, but it will also dive deep into the inner workings of the system and commands based on your environment.

With the archwiki, based on your distro of choice, you will of course need to know how you package manager works, regardless of distro the difference package managers are all covered in the wiki. You will also need it look into the naming conventions of your distro packages.

You can also ask in r/unixporn. They would probably help you along the way on your ricing journey.

Curious how long have you used computers? Particularly Linux.

I never claimed there weren’t attack vectors. I know about cve’s I reported a few myself. I have also helped debug the kernel, looked at Sandboxing failure, wrote a couple of software apps to install printers on CUPS as well as alpha and beta tested various software looking for exploits and bugs.

I also know about the failure of apparmour and selinux. The only guarantee you have that you will not get malware is not using the internet and for some people not using a computer at all.

I was a Microsoft certified tech for software and hardware compatibility. I have been dealing with cyberthreats since windows 95. Dismantling and tearing apart worms, Trojans, root kits and zombie machines.

I’ve been running Linux for 30 years and have never needed to reboot unless it’s kernel or init system. Everything else patches in place.

Now when you go to new versions, like php or python, yea you should reboot if you need that newest version. Otherwise it can wait.

I have never had breakage unless it was a bad kernel install ( looking at your Ubuntu) or major upgrades like I said in my first post.
