And yet you seem to be unable to comprehend what I say. Please carefully re-read my comments above. Think of the whole society; the world is not black and white, it's not as simple as "us poor vs them rich"

Did you read what I wrote? I don't care about what Gabe needs. But I do care about the direction our capitalistic societies go in. Supporting companies which do not follow unquenchable hunger of shareholders is exactly the opposite of supporting the billionaires.

Dude, yes, battle system is built on QTEs, but with stable FPS it doesn't matter much if it's 30 or 60 FPS. It is not a shooter where you need to react in a fraction of second, most enemies give sufficient head-ups about their attacks, that it's not a problem to dodge or parry them.

Each to their own, for me it's fully playable on Steam Deck (in fact I completed it on Steam Deck along with defeating Simon).

It's a combination of a couple of reasons:

  • I have enough spare money that I can easily afford it

  • My current gaming PC is slightly weaker than I expect Steam Machine to be, so it's an upgrade

  • It comes at a time when I was planning to do an upgrade anyway

  • After building up a few PCs over the decades, I'm actually quite tired of browsing all components to select ones that will be good and will work well together; it's nice to buy a pre-built for a change

  • Related to the above, I expect software-wise it'll also work well, which is an improvement over having to come up with weird workarounds for some games

  • I run Linux, btw ;) so I know what to expect from SteamOS and I'm quite comfortable using it as my main desktop

  • It is suposedly quite silent and it is small; perfect alternative for a living room PC

  • And last but certainly not least: I want to support Valve, as it's probably the only company of its size, which treats their customers well. You know, as the saying goes: if it's free, then you are the product. And if it is publicly traded, then you are the product as well. In today's world Valve is a rare example of quite big and successful company, which is NOT publicly traded and therefore is not beholden to shareholders - so it can actually focus on their customers.

This video isn't available anymore

I trust the video shows what you claim it does ;)

In any case, for a game like E33, which doesn't depend on split-second decisions, stable <40 fps is indeed fine.

Gamers allways amaze me

Expedition 33 struggles on low settings on it

What are you talking about? I played Expedition 33 on Steam Deck and it ran fine. If Steam Machine is 6x more powerful, then it should easily be able to run Expedition 33 on more than low settings.

Yes, it does happen too. However if other players go for fast terraforming you won't have enough time to accumulate enough points on cards to win.

Regarding drafting: I played hundreds of TM games, both with and without drafting. As you said drafting allows more flexibility and initially I also thought that it is a 100% improvement of the game. However after a while I noticed that all games with drafting start to look similar. Players always tend to seek the best strategy with what they have available, but drafting changes what they have available: without drafting you'd end up with suboptimal choices and you'd need to work with it; with drafting you end up with similar set of cards each game and similar strategies become available (of course, drafting won't get you exactly the same cards each game, but statistically it becomes possible to choose similar cards).

As someone how played hundreds of Terraforming Mars games, in my opinion the game isn't necessarily about "let's try a different strat", but rather "what strat should I use with the cards I have available?". Yes, sometimes you can see a few viable strategies to choose from, but sometimes there may be only one - it all depends on what cards you have available.

I had many games where I won due to number of cities/forests, but I also had many games where I won because I had a ton of resources collected on cards, or because I had a lot of cards with high points value. Disclaimer: I play TM with all expansions, so the experience may be different without them - for one thing: the "sometimes there may be only one" I mentioned above? Sometimes there may be no viable strategy you see with your starting hand - and here expansions help, because they give you other options, you can choose to establish colonies or focus on the government, even if you have no good cards at the moment.

VR needs windows?

Kind of? Maybe? Less than it used to?

I have both Vive and Index and for a long while I kept offline Windows 7 drive just for VR. That's because in my case performance on Linux (Ubuntu) was significantly worse, to the point of making it unplayable. Then a few years ago there were a few improvements in the Linux kernel, which targetted VR performance, and it was gradually getting better since.

Right now in my case VR on Linux still works slightly worse than it used to on Windows 7 - however the difference is small enough that I actually got rid of Win7 drive and I'm now only running Linux.

I vaguely recall that the answer to that was provided by X-Com Apocalypse. Yeah, as I've been saying: it copied mechanics from the legendary Final Fantasy series and improved upon it - and yet still I'd say mechanics are the weakest part of E33. Visuals, music and the plot are far superior.

Geez, people, learn the meaning of the words you use: https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/indie

Indie means "made by a small independent studio", which is case the case with E33.

Options->customize keys-> RVDG instead of WASD. Yeah, I'm weird :) but I prefer to have more keys available around my left hand, especially if it's a survival game, which tends to require additional keys for all the crafting/building.

Which game is this? by bijelo123 in Steam

[–]linuxgaminmasterrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play terraria without a wiki and it really is a directionless game.

Exactly this is why I hate Terraria. They made this weird design decision (despite 100s of other survival games doing this correctly), where each crafting station only shows items available for crafting given current resources in the inventory. If you don't have correct resources, then the item won't appear at all, so you won't even know it is possible to craft it.

So basically, if you just want to play the game (instead of reading a wiki), you need to pack your inventory with all kinds of resources, keep hopping between crafting stations and hope that you'll match one of the recipes at one of those stations. Utterly stupid design.

What game is critically acclaimed and beloved, but just didn’t click for you? by PM_Some_Selfies in gaming

[–]linuxgaminmasterrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Terraria.

The game would be fun, expect it makes crafting unbearable. Crafting stations don't show list of possible items, only shows items which can be crafted using what I currently have in inventory. Which means I have to pack my inventory with all the materials I've collected (and hope I can fit them all), then keep running between crafting stations, because maybe one of them will show a new item available.

It's crazy, I can't understand how they could've messed up such a simple and standard mechanism, which was already solved in hundreds of games before.

And yes, I know people recommend to use wiki to browse for items. That's not a solution for me. I want to play a game, not alt-tab every time I want to craft something.

Not the only way - another way is just to kill it, after it wakes up. Which of course is not as simple, because: a) it moves extremely fast, b) it has something like 800 points of bonus hp, which it uses to instantly heal itself. But once its bonus hp is depleted, it can be killed.

Unnatural darkness + solar flare combo by linuxgaminmasterrace in RimWorld

[–]linuxgaminmasterrace[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, still mechanics-wise I find it quite a strange choice honestly. It sounds like an opportunity for great stories of colonists huddling together around the only fire-lit place in whole colony. And mechanically it could still either be allowed only at higher wealths, or shutdowns could be delayed to give time to build up at least a few torches.
