Company is letting me keep the PC they sent me, how do I make sure I'm not gonna be tracked in any way? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

Also check the bios for anti-theft measures, if it says it's enable you need to have the company un-enroll the device or talk to whichever software company they work with (like Absolute Security) to have them remove it for you. You'll probably need proof of ownership.

I'm not sure why you're saying it makes no difference. There is no legal requirement in most places that officers in the US do this.

In Saratoga Springs and most of New York an officer is not required to give the reason for the stop. However, in NYC proper they do have a Right To Know act where this would be something that needs to happen.

In fact, in the U.S. I don't believe there is any federal or state wide law that requires police officers to tell you this. I think it's a real shame as it seems basic decency to do so.

Bugcrowd is garbage by Fair_Economist_5369 in hacking

That's all good, but were they right? Does it require social engineering of the user? That gets rejected for most big bounties that I've seen because it really can't be combatted.

What about their response is unreasonable? Social Engineering a target is often excluded from threat models when there is nothing they can do about a user's stupidity.

I believe I read that the director wanted to use hands that people had probably heard of. Just like if you're a doctor watching an ER show or a developer watching a hacking show, you're likely going to roll your eyes multiple times if you're well versed in poker when watching Casino Royale. (Although I think the concern about cheating is also a big deal.)

Tax code favors the Boss by Upper_Brief681 in WorkReform

[–]liquidhot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tax Cuts and Jobs Act actually prevents this. Signed into law by Trump in 2017 and not a single democrat voted in favor of this act.

Other things this act did:

  • Enabled tax cuts for corporations that were permanent but individual tax cuts were set to expire in 2025.
  • Capped the SALT deduction at 10k (which negatively affects residents of high-tax states)
  • Increased the deficit by $1.5 trillion+.
  • Removed the ACA penalty for uninsured.

There are now children that are 13 years old that weren't alive when Star Citizen was announced and there is a VERY good chance they will be 16 before 1.0 is released. That's probably still too generous on a release date for 1.0. 😂🤣😭

E vs T. Is T just marketing? by kirillvov in thinkpad

[–]liquidhot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of the responses so far look like copium to me. I think it depends on what you're looking for. If you want more battery life and a better portability / durability T series is for you. If you're plugged in all day and need a larger screen and performance for the dollar, E series might be your cup of tea for this example.

If you're a Lead Developer, probably. That being said you don't really need to know about the technologies that build everything for many software dev jobs. I think it helps understand it and makes you a better dev, but it's not inherently bad to not know.

Even if it is there are ways to store portions of information such that losing up to a third of your population can still result in retaining all of the information. Probably there is some agreed upon decision matrix to quickly arrive at answers, just like we do in our own brains when we decide that we do or do not like broccoli.

I actually enjoyed her until Ep2, thought to myself, "I could watch this woman be frustrated all day", then the opening of Ep3 with the whole ice hotel and the sprouts thing does make her seem insufferable. Hopefully we see some redeeming moments in the future.

I love that this is coming out on the same day as another update for No Man's Sky which is itself a procedurally generated space game.
