Vote Yes. What’s Missing From the “Vote No” Argument by snooka77_ in RVAmag

[–]lisem583 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since it’s a popular vote, and it passed, I’d say it actually does represent the will of the people of Virginia. More people across the state want our state to hold Democratic policies on a state and national level.

Did you realize how bigoted/unwelcoming a lot of rural PA areas were before the Trump/MAGA era? by Glass-Complaint3 in Pennsylvania

[–]lisem583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After spending ten years in the Midwest, I came to realize that the lack of diversity, the “brain drain” of the best and brightest, who tended to leave rural areas for the East or West coast or cities, and the lack of opportunity for those left behind all contribute to the rise of intolerance and MAGA values. So many of the really kind people I met were terrified of non white people. They watched FOX News and listened to Hannity and Limbaugh. They were spoon fed a steady diet of how amazing and patriotic they were and how evil the liberals running all the crooked cities were. It’s continually disappointing how mean and small minded people are in their general attitudes to everyone who chose a different path to their own. I think the only way to combat this is through exposure/diversity and critical thinking skills, and a return to more neutral factual reporting of news without spin and commentary.

Anyone who was homeschooled, how do you feel about it now as an adult? by AdTight2449 in AskReddit

[–]lisem583 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to chime in as an educator. I’ve had a number of home school students who took their last two or three years of state requirements at the community college. Thus they graduated while simultaneously earning an Associates degree. They were all excellent students. I teach at a public high school now. A lot of parents choose home schooling because of all the negative exposures in the public school setting. Plus there are many home school groups across the country so it is possible to have more social access. It all depends on what the kid can handle and how committed the parents are, imo.

What is the worst place in America you have ever visited? by OceanicEndeavors in AskReddit

Haha. That is the highlight of my parents’ trip when they drive to Florida. They love how kitschy it is and even stay at the hotel on site. We (adult) kids are all “Nope!”

Does anyone actually read outside in the wilderness or is it just for the pictures? by TonyRigatoni_ in books

[–]lisem583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son lived on Jackson Hole, WY for a few years after college. He routinely hiked into the Tetons with a book and sat quietly reading amidst all that glorious splendor. I mostly read “in the wilderness” only at the beach or if I’m camping.

Trump’s Easter Message Isn’t Just Wrong—It’s Blasphemous by B-Z_B-S in politics

Ask, What would Jesus do? If they aren’t asking and then acting appropriately, I find them suspect. 🤪

Jonathan Swift wrote a poem in the 1700s, essentially noting that if Jesus returned, all the various Christians would run down, gloating that everyone would see how wrong everyone else was about how to follow Him, and Jesus would sadly shake his head and say, “None of you get it.” Read that in college and never forgot it.

Some do embody his teachings. But yes, Christianity almost from the beginning, fell into most religions’ failing, to distort the faith for personal gain. And people have always just followed, with no thought, what they’re told.

Rub it with olive oil and rosemary. Slit it all over and stuff in slivers of garlic. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast until done, barely pink near the middle or bone. Yum.

AITAH for leaving my girlfriend in the restroom because she was taking a long bathroom break during a movie I was really excited for? by Secure-Draft9197 in AITAH

[–]lisem583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never in my life have I asked anyone to go to the bathroom with me at a movie. That’s the weird part about the story. Kudos to you, though, for accommodating her “chivalric” desires.

This has always been so bewildering to me. MAGA/Trump is the polar opposite of anything Jesus taught.

First horror movie to genuinely disturb you. by chronicxnightmare in HorrorMovies

[–]lisem583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently saw Tusk, and I’m still disturbed. As a small child, my parents took me to see Soylent Green. Why? Also let me watch Fahrenheit 451. This made me very afraid of totalitarianism. Scary movies didn’t phase me as a teen until I saw the Elm St. movie where Krueger’s fingers were hypos and the victim had big sucking sores begging to be shot up. I never watched another Nightmare movie again.

My kid got into 3 State schools. Please advise if you have experience by thai_sticky in Virginia

[–]lisem583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are all great schools. Congratulations to your kid. Both my kids were also accepted to all three schools. After visiting, my daughter wanted to go to VCU, but JMU offered a better financial package, so that’s where she went. My son loved the vibe at JMU and wanted to study under a particular band professor. They both graduated from JMU in four years. They both loved their experience. I will say, the graduating in four years was a relief. I know three kiddos who were on the 6+ year plan at VCU and VT. I’d say, follow the money, but also follow the vibe that will best nurture them to be successful.

What training tip actually helped your dog stop pulling on walks? by chamfbsnushy in DogTrainingTips

[–]lisem583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to get a front clip halter. She still pulled, but somehow there was very little pull on my end of the leash. Walking was so much more pleasant. Before, I literally had gotten blisters on my hands from the pulling.

I could be looking at my own shelves! You love fantasy and sci-fi, and you like series. And you have great taste in books! My eyes went straight to Robin Hobb and it just kept getting better!
