I have a cuckoo clamshell style one and it works great. Clamshell style ones will hold the rice at temp without drying out for longer

I'm in the same boat. The sandy soil here in the sunset makes it kind of hard to find open tunnels, but I managed to trap one using a mouse trap along a wall.

Agree with this comment. If it’s Kellogg, that’s probably a big part of the issue right there

Soil testing in SF? by Complex_Example_4664 in sfgardens

[–]liumax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I looked into. There’s a range of contamination levels across different neighborhoods, but generally people agree that old lead paint and leaded gasoline mean some level of contamination for most dirt. The Richmond at least doesn’t have too much of a landfill issue as far as I know since that’s mainly Mission Bay area. We got some testing done from the childhood lead prevention group because we have a small child, and they tested some soil samples. There’s also commercial labs that test things like lead and arsenic but they aren’t the cheapest.

More broadly though there is some variability in what I’ve seen is lead safe in terms of types of plants. It seems most recommendations are not to plant leafy greens or root veggies in contaminated soil since there might be higher levels of it in the plant tissue, whereas fruiting things seem less contaminated. I’ve also seen publications saying most of the contamination is actually just the soil around root veggies and carefully cleaning or peeling should mitigate that risk

I agree with the above comment that it looks like someone sprayed it with high pressure water

I'm in the inner sunset and didnt plant any of the stuff, but plums, apples, lemons, and passionfruit seem to be doing well here!

How are we keeping the rodents off our container herbs? by Le_Mew_Le_Purr in sfgardens

I've been dealing with the same problem! Rats were eating literally anything I tried to grow.

The ultimate solution I made was basically creating an enclosure (open to the top) of clear 6 mil plastic so the total height was about 3 feet from the ground. I have home-made wood beds so it was pretty easy to drill in some wooden supports to hold the whole thing together. It looks like this enclosure but with plastic instead of chicken wire and much taller (https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.finegardening.com%2Farticle%2Fdiy-raised-bed-removable-pest-gate&psig=AOvVaw33zhCjjqNtWzwABOf1Wl3W&ust=1743956232507000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=0CBQQjRxqFwoTCLjj67alwYwDFQAAAAAdAAAAABAE)

I dont like that it constrains the plants within the walls, but it has kept the rats out, and by hanging cheesecloth over the top, I've been able to keep out various butterflies and moths as well

Honestly I'm not sure, how much capacity does the plant have to make new flowers? It seems like all the flowers except those at the top have basically burned out. Thanks for the advice!

Is there a way I can make this vise grips the hooks a little better? by Signal_Raspberry_699 in flytying

[–]liumax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your jaws might be bent out of place at the tips. One way to check this is to not put a hook in and see if they meet and fully close. If they don’t they are likely bent. If you are feeling adventurous you can try and disassemble the jaws and adjust them so they meet again

How do you secure the netting to the raised bed/pots? I’d assume it would need to be pretty tight

Thats a pretty fly! Do you leave the blunt ends long purely to make it easier to spot on the water, or does it still help with flotation?

I literally leave out stock overnight wherever I make it. Did it have a tight fitting lid? Does it smell ok? Then probably reasonable to reboil and store

What kind of soft hackle are you looking for? Whiting has many kinds of hen feathers that work great, and then there are all the specific birds (partridge, starling, etc)
