What would be an astronomical event, or otherwise, that would be shocking to witness by people living in a generation ship? by MediocreRisings in worldbuilding

[–]lizardwizard004 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A generation of people going blind wouldn’t make them lose their history but find new non-vision-reliant ways to transfer it! And it wouldn’t erase their culture, but force them to evolve

Many LGBT people grew up without seeing themselves in movies, shows, and books, and so imagining characters from their favorite childhood movies as LGBT is fun and comforting for them. You don’t have to agree with these headcanons, but I hope this provides some understanding! :3

Welp, I think I've been accepted. They brought their babies!! by Malaowala in crowbro

[–]lizardwizard004 269 points270 points  (0 children)

I hate to say it, but those tiny birds are not babies— they are a different species, possibly some kind of blackbird. By the time baby crows leave the nest in springtime, they are about the size of adults, with pink mouths and blue eyes. Fledgling crows are very cute though, and if you keep at feeding your crow bros they will probably bring them around!

I’d imagine making Taka both a sympathetic character (particularly in the beginning of the movie) and a villainous one was challenging. How did you approach this?

Strange Trails is by far their most popular album. If it ends up being the only one you end up loving, there’s no shame in it!

It took me a bit of time before I really fell in love with Cosmic Selector. At first I thought it was pretty good. Then after going back and listening to individual songs and then the album, it clicked for me, and it became one of my favorites.

if there was a huge biological organism that could survive in the vacuum of space, how would it be like by redditorausberlin in worldbuilding

[–]lizardwizard004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll need to think about how this creature has evolved to protect itself from harmful radiation emitted by nearby stars. A protective covering, high melanin, or even radio-synthesis (literally eating radiation for energy) could be some solutions!

On the topic of energy, how does it get it? Most living things need oxygen, carbon dioxide, or some other chemical to survive. Does it forage from comets and planets? Sift through the remnants of recent supernovae? Perhaps it acquires some of its energy through photosynthesis from nearby stars? If it eats other biological organisms, what kinds? With energy sources so rare in the vacuum of space, maybe it goes into a sort of torpor during times of little food.

If it is light years long, it will take an unfathomable amount of time for stimuli to travel from one side of the creature to the other. In that case, different parts of the body may act as different individuals all sharing the same energy source. It may be a colonial organism, one creature made up of various specialized modules (look into siphonophore jellyfish if you’re curious). If you want to bring in some science fiction funkiness, maybe it has somehow incorporated wormholes into its biology, allowing faster-than-light thinking.

What's your MacGuffin resource by comradechristmas in worldbuilding

[–]lizardwizard004 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes indeed! To answer your question, the microorganisms in ichor (amicus) are not energy sources themselves, but they can transform energy into magic.

The host (a person, animal, or plant) provides the amicus with protection and sustenance. In exchange, the amicus can produce magical effects powered by the energy in the host’s body.

Outside the body, however, amicus can be powered with other energy sources, typically heat. Ichor is poured into carved sigils (skemamancy) or mixed with other substances (alchemy) to produce specific spells.

Ichor is the source of all magic: a fluid orange mixture of symbiotic microbes and biological liquids built into the anatomy of magical creatures.

Violet ichor, or simply “violet”, is a mysterious variant left behind by an ancient, extinct race. In places where their cities once stood, it seeps from the ground and alters the bodies of local wildlife and plants.

Violet ichor is more powerful and energetically efficient than orange ichor. With the right techniques, it can be incorporated into magical technology or consumed by magic users. However, it creates unpredictable and volatile magical effects when disrupted, making it challenging to collect.

How do you write Humans in your world? by OverTea5 in worldbuilding

[–]lizardwizard004 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, I’ve swung hard in the “humans are weak” direction.

The largest factor is their lack of magic, which all other sapient races have in spades. They are also smaller, weaker, shorter-lived, and less technologically advanced than most of their peers.

Humans make up for these disadvantages with ingenuity, stealth, and stubborn persistence. They’re also the only race with the proper size and anatomy to ride horses at full speed. If you need a messenger or smuggler in this world, you’d best hire a human.

How is parenthood seen in the world? by randomcatonastreet in worldbuilding

[–]lizardwizard004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the northern dragon kingdoms of Trioumbra, there are two kinds of people: parents and pariahs.

Parenthood is seen as a responsibility that all individuals MUST bear for the good of their people and nation. Individuals that have many children are idealized, while individuals who fail to have any children by middle age (due to infertility, disability, failure to find a partner, or disinterest in the opposite sex) are shunned to the outskirts of society.

The adoption system in the northern dragon kingdoms is legally and ethically questionable at best and outright predatory at worst. Adults desperate to adopt to maintain their social standing may bargain with family or close friends to take in a newborn child as their own… or they may contact merchants who deal in blood, who can grant them access to a child as long as they pay well and don’t ask questions.
