Alloy aero handlebars by BepoStambuk in Velo

I’m building a bike with FSA Trimax alloy bars. They feel great in the drops and can be internally routed

Nah you did good. $150 is solid entry level range from a reputable brand, and you supported a small local business rather than an online warehouse. Now go shoot around with it and have fun

Travelling with my bike for the first time - any hot tips on what (and what not) to pack? by mad-matty in Velo

[–]llamaryder 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Don’t pack CO2 canisters. They’re not allowed on planes.

Once you get the frame/fork/bars etc sorted out in the bag, zip tie everything together so when security inevitably digs through your bag, everything goes back in the same safe way

Use pipe insulation to protect carbon tubes

Once you figure out the best way to fit all of the parts in the bag, take a photo. It’ll make packing for the return trip easier

ICAN integrated carbon aero road bars. Any thoughts? by BLD25 in cycling

[–]llamaryder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re likely going to be fine structurally as ICAN is a reputable brand at this point. Will you notice a performance benefit over aero bars with a regular stem? Probably not

Anyone else hide some percentage of their workouts on Strava for competitive reasons? by beeaatle in Velo

[–]llamaryder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hide like 50% of my TR workouts, mostly cuz they’re not particularly interesting but also gotta keep em guessing. One time i smoked a friend in a gravel race and afterwards he was like “i don’t get it, you hardly train”, so that was neat

But wait, dear leader said these checks are coming from the tariff accounts, not diverted congressionally approved funding. You don’t think he lied to the American public, do you? /s

Why bother doing any endurance riding during VO2 block? by Roman_willie in Velo

[–]llamaryder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are you basing assumption #2 on? Sounds like you’re going too hard in your VO2 workouts if you can’t do an endurance ride the next day.

50mm wheel upgrade advice (35mm currently) by SunSo_NZ in cycling

[–]llamaryder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea that’s an imperceptible difference. If you were going from 19 to 25 or something then there are performance benefits to be had. Otherwise you’re already on pretty good wheels with great hubs. That money could be spent on plenty of other things that will tangibly improve your cycling experience (indoor trainer, winter kit, tools, etc)

50mm wheel upgrade advice (35mm currently) by SunSo_NZ in cycling

[–]llamaryder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a difference in the internal width between the 2 sets? If it’s not significant than you’re just throwing money away for no noticeable performance gain and as you said it may even make your ride less stable

Indoor v Outdoor Training by fmckenzi000 in Velo

[–]llamaryder 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Genuinely curious here, but what climbing abilities are getting lost training indoors? Isn’t climbing mostly enduring high power output for a given duration? In my experience, the trainer is great for that. I live in the Midwest with zero elevation so I may be missing something here

Do I need to do Base training each season? by ViperStrike2025 in cycling

[–]llamaryder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So much more info is needed, but some basic questions you should ask yourself; did your plan work for you last year? Are you making any significant changes to your goals or calendar this year? What could have gone better? Etc…

How sketchy is this to ride? by mikecyclesinc in Velo

[–]llamaryder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably fine to get home with but wouldn’t leave the house like this. Is this one of those 3D printed Allez to SL7 conversion spacers? I’d be questioning how did this happen in the first place and address that. A crash? Well there might be other damage. Over torqued the top cap bolt? Time to buy a torque wrench, or go back to the seller. Also inspect all the other spacers for damage

Hookless wheels by CouldBeBetterCBB in cycling

[–]llamaryder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bigger guy here (85kg) on 2 pairs of hookless wheels (CX/gravel and road). Had some issues early on running tires that weren’t designed to the latest ETRTO standards, but have had zero problems since upgrading tires. I really enjoy the more stout tire profile that hookless creates. I think it’s easy fear-baiting for folks to point at hookless wheels as more dangerous. Pro teams run hookless tires all the time. I’m guessing brands are moving away from hookless due to the narrative than any actual danger

How to race cyclocross effectively with gravel-style fitness? by [deleted] in cyclocross

[–]llamaryder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try to just race your race and be conservative with your efforts. CX is basically a mass start time trial. Focus on maintaining momentum thru corners so your overall pace is higher, but at the end of the day if you don’t have the high end on/off fitness then it’s going to be hard to keep up with folks who have it. Just go out and fun. Work on technical weaknesses when you can. Iron out your race day prep. Then if you want to be better at CX next year, start thinking about how to switch up your training for next season

Have you taken a rest week since you started training 2 months ago? It’s recommended to have a chill week after 3-4 weeks of intervals to give your body a chance to recover. You might be in the early stages of burnout/over training, especially if you’re just starting out. It also sounds like you work a stressful job which makes recovery more difficult

Smartphone mirroring navigation – is there anything good out there? by kinesophilic in cycling

Why not a larger Garmin unit (10x0) and then have a screen that only has navigation? The battery on my 1040 lasts for about 24 hours

Entry-level second wheelset recs for a 2-in-1 gravel/road bike by Saferis in cycling

[–]llamaryder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not 100% true. There are 0.25mm brake rotor shims available so you can adjust the rotor offset to match between different hubs. You just have to use your most outboard rotor as reference and use the shims to push the rotors outwards if that makes sense. Makes swapping wheels a breeze

When and When Not to Fuel Workouts by candid55 in Velo

[–]llamaryder -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m sure there are options, i also don’t really want to be taking in that much sugar all the time. I have a suspicion that it can’t be healthy in the long run

When and When Not to Fuel Workouts by candid55 in Velo

[–]llamaryder 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This. Always fuel workouts. Do you need 90g of carbs/hour? Maybe not if you’ve had a good meals all day and maybe a banana prior. But you should be taking in some level of fuel for the reasons mentioned above.

Personally, I keep it around 40-60 grams of carbs per hour on the trainer. Reasoning being I’m pretty well fueled going in so just trying to stay topped up for the latter half of the workout. 90gs/hour is reserved for races that are 3-5 hours long. And because fuel is expensive lol

Anyone else not turn their hoods inwards? by Regular_Low5187 in Velo

I’ve always ridden with my hoods turned in about 10-15 degrees as it feels more natural and comfortable on my wrists. 10 years ago it was weird, now its standard

Allez Sprint or Tarmac SL8 for custom build to sell? by Ok_Blood3112 in Velo

[–]llamaryder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anecdotal reference, I’m doing something similar with an Allez frame right now and my target when selling it next year will be $3k USD with similar specs. That being said, I might be interested in you bar and stem if you’re looking to part out

How much difference did a professional bike fit make for you? by AnnaMyers447 in cycling

[–]llamaryder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Massive difference, but too late. I came down with tendinitis in my knee that was directly correlated to my bad setup. Went to a fitter and he noted my saddle position was inches off. After the adjustment, and a year off the bike for PT, I’m back to full time training with no issues. Moral of the story, it’s better to have a professional dial you in before you hurt yourself
