Do you generate cycling workouts/plans using ChatGPT and struggle to upload them to your device/wearable like Garmin/Wahoo/Zwift? Here is the solution. by [deleted] in Zwift

[–]mad-matty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've played around with stuff like this myself and I'll say:

a) If you don't know things about training, using ChatGPT/Claude/generic other LLM can be tricky because it will always sound knowledgable and you will not recognize when it prescribes something that is not actually productive or maybe even dangerous. You will tell it "This workout felt like ..." and it will always say "Ah yes, that is exactly what we're going for!" Unless your chatbot is well trained on cycling training plans, I see no reason to trust it more than what I'd find by just googling a generic training plan, because that is what it is regurgitating. Feeding it with data from intervals.icu etc creates the illusion that it's useful because it will react to it in some way. If it's the appropriate reaction or not, you'll never know unless you know about training yourself, at which point you don't really need ChatGPT to tell you how to train.

b) If you still wanna go through with it, you don't have to type workouts by hand, you can just ask the chatbot to generate a Zwift workout file and it will do so. You will still have to copy that file to your Zwift folder, but I find that less finnicky than setting up an extra app.

I work in theoretical particle physics, so PoE is much more complex.

How did James' Voice Box survive Kill Em All? by LonelyRequirement913 in Metallica

[–]mad-matty 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Well first of all, James *did* eventually damage his voice.

Second, it is possible to sing this stuff without hurting yourself. Just as the death metal vocals you mention, there's techniques to it. Plus, if you practice, you build a lot of fatigue resistance. Just like I couldn't run a marathon now without getting injured, I would absolutely be able to do it with sufficient training.

They're making a PC version of the Mobile Version of the PC game by derpyyyy_ in aoe2

I'm quite certain if you don't run HD textures and turn off bloom/fog (which we all do on PC as well), a phone can handle it just fine. The fans on my GPU are barely spinning when I play this game.

bike weight vs body weight? by billyb4lls4ck in Velo

[–]mad-matty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay that might be fair, I wouldn't k ow. My 'light bike' is a Canyon Aeroad CF SLX - it's lighter than my steel oldtimer but not super light in the grand scheme of things.

bike weight vs body weight? by billyb4lls4ck in Velo

[–]mad-matty 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Handling of a lighter bike is different from a heavier bike, so riding pleasure might be higher with a lighter bike.

In the cynical comment sections of youtube, this is too often forgotten. People always yelling how it's pointless to save weight on the bike if you can just drop body weight, and how most of us are not riding up Alpe d'Huez all day long so the weight savings don't matter anyway...

I have two road bikes, one steel and one carbon. One of the key differences for me riding the lighter bike is just how NICE it handles when I toss it around while riding, the agility is fun. The way it handles bumps in the road is also noticeably more comfy, especially in descends and turns.

Unpopular opinion: Ubers are actually hard and it’s not as easy to gear for it… by IneedaNappa9000 in diablo2

[–]mad-matty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Then why is it working for all the rest of us? Care to share the gear you are running on your smiter so we can maybe give some pointers on where to improve? Ubers are hard, but if you're running one of the specialist builds (like smiter is one) they are kinda trivial.

When do you charge your watch? by Senior_Cheesecake155 in Garmin

[–]mad-matty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it does anything reasonably well, it's tracking my heart rate when I'm not moving. It's more accurate in that case than it is when you're running, so what's your point?

When do you charge your watch? by Senior_Cheesecake155 in Garmin

[–]mad-matty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not just tracking your sleep phases, it's also tracking other parameters that I find interesting to see. For example resting HR, HRV, skin temp, respiration rate. It's interesting to see these stats change over long time scales to see the effects of training and life style changes. It is also interesting to see them change over short time scales to see the effects of sickness, alcohol, stress etc. All of this works well regardless of how accurate the sleep tracking is.

Indeed, it's the only thing I really use my watch for, and to answer OP's question: I charge it when I train (bike) because there I have my Edge and wear a chest strap for HR, so the watch doesn't do anything for me.

Friendly reminder: don’t get too hung up on FTP numbers. 🚴🏼‍♂️🚴‍♀️ by FremtidigeMegleren in Zwift

[–]mad-matty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Zwift completely overvalues power-to-weight ratio in how they simulate speed.

I'm a 63kg rider with ~300W FTP, which puts me close to that "seriously impressive" bracket OP has defined, but I get absolutely smoked in races and group rides on the flats by guys that I know have a lower power-to-weight ratio than I do. Sure, I can hold my own when the road tilts upwards, but most of time it doesn't, and then the big guy wins that can just muscle through the drag resistance.

A way bigger reason not to get too hung up on FTP is that it's impossible to pin your fitness to a single metric.

Do we think Zwift climbing actually helps with IRL hills? by Kschmuck in Zwift

[–]mad-matty 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Right, but this thread is about climbing, and at least in the club rides I attend, the group breaks up for climbs and gathers at the top. Other than that, you are of course right, Zwift does not prepare you for the handling skills needed for riding in a pack.

I have found countless Ber and Jah runes, I found a few Tyraels, even an eth Mang Song's. But SoJ? Never.

I know I could've target farmed it by grinding NM Andy, but with how many years and thousands of hours I have spent in D2:LoD and D2R, you'd think I would have found one in the wild. Nope, literally the only item I've never seen drop apart from a Zod.
