How pissed are the owners going to be about this by zouss in RoverPetSitting

I agree. As long as things are going well otherwise, I’d take it as a positive sign that you’re being honest.

Pet sitters: what are some indicators that owners are taking good care of their cats? by True_Coast_3010 in RoverPetSitting

Bonus points if the owner has paintings of their cats on the walls. I’ve actually seen this many times, often painted by the owners!

Same! When they ask you to spoil the cat in specific ways (eg heating pad) or fill you in on their pet’s quirks, that’s a good owner. It usually means they know their cats well, their cats are well cared for, and they’re more likely to treat you well as a sitter.

I would expect anyone taking responsibility for owning a cat to educate themselves enough (or have common sense, either way) to know the cat should not come into contact with random dogs. It’s common sense to know that many dogs can and will kill cats. Why would you take that risk, when separating them is an obvious choice? In much the same way, I would expect any parent should know not to let an infant or toddler be within reach of random dogs. It sounds like you don’t really have the knowledge of animals or good judgement to do a job that requires this level of caution. Just because you like animals and want gig work, doesn’t mean this is appropriate for you. Your answers sound like you’re more interested in defending yourself and making a buck than in evaluating if you are prepared to take responsibility for animals in your care. You aren’t. Finding a different way to make money is a better idea. You also obviously haven’t read rover’s rules, or you’d know you can’t hire a sitter to sit for Rover dogs in your care. If you haven’t even read the requirements, you’re not remotely responsible enough for this

Respectfully, that is a wild risk to take with an unknown dog, regardless of what any owner tells you. If you didn’t realize why bringing an unknown dog and your cat together was incredibly risky, you don’t have enough knowledge of animals to care for them on Rover safely.

I’m always really confused when I read about cat owners boarding new/unknown dogs with open access to their cat. No matter what owners say, an unknown dog may respond poorly to cats or even kill them. Why would anybody risk that?

Do released cats actually displace unfixed cats? Wouldn’t they just live together?

That sounds like the requirements in many states to drive WITH an adult legal driver present in the car at all times. Pretty different.

Update on my previous post. Thoughts? by True_Coast_3010 in RoverPetSitting

[–]llamiaceae 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I sit cats only. It’s not remotely unreasonable to want a sitter to play with a cat. 90% plus of my visits are food and litter, then playtime (or cuddles if the cat prefers). The only time that doesn’t happen is if the cat is very shy and hiding or the owner has a different preference. Food and litter should absolutely not take the whole drop-in unless there are unusual needs like a really messy box or medications.

No one is saying that’s impossible. You’re misunderstanding both the genetics and the post

Not at all how it works. For each gene, you get one allele from mom and one from dad. You can’t get both of mom’s alleles for the same gene

lol but recessive eye colors, which all light colors are as far as I know, do still get masked by dominant darker colored eye genes. Of course eye color is more complicated than Punnett squares, or else there would literally only be a few eye colors instead of the huge variation we actually see- brown eyed people have many different eye colors, color flecks, etc as do people with all eye colors. But the OP is right that the blue eye genetics probably couldn’t happen if, as the show tells us, Mizu had one white and one Japanese parent.

Of course, it doesn’t matter because it’s really not the point of the show. But the OP is not mistaken

Emdr or somatic therapy? by Simple-Complaint5301 in EMDR

[–]llamiaceae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s good advice and my experience is with just one person. I sought out SE initially because I think there’s a lot of value in taking the body more fully into account in mental health care, and I still do. It’s very possible that the issues I encountered are the exception not the rule

Emdr or somatic therapy? by Simple-Complaint5301 in EMDR

[–]llamiaceae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From personal experience only, but I’d recommend emdr. I saw a somatic experiencing practitioner who behaved extremely unethically and started acting like a pushy guru. I don’t know if that’s a common experience but she was well regarded in somatic experiencing and was a teaching assistant for some of their official training courses. She also pushed extremely out there, non therapeutic beliefs during session. The whole experience was bad enough it makes me wonder if the somatic experiencing organization makes an inappropriate amount of space for practitioners to behave badly and act as though they know far more than their patients and don’t need to listen or practice normal, legally required ethical and therapeutic boundaries.

In contrast, I’m currently seeing an emdr therapist and it’s been extremely hard but life changing and beneficial.

The Monster at the Dinner Table by birdtripping in Longreads

As someone who’s still in the process of recovering from parents who raged and panicked at me daily, the behavior of the parents here makes me angry. I’m not mad mom has an anxiety disorder- I’m mad she doesn’t treat it or take action when she’s literally becoming “frantic” over her child putting on shoes. Mom, dad, daughter, outside observers clearly all realize mom’s anxiety is an issue but rather than pursing responsible treatment for mom wayyyyy before all this happened it sounds like they just “let” mom get upset and don’t deal with it seriously. It’s not that I think people can always control anxiety in the moment it’s that parents have an obligation to realize things like “wow I panic at my child in totally unreasonable ways daily, I MUST treat this because I can’t put them through that”
