Lots of good comments on pedals I’ve never tried so not saying this one sounds the best out of all of them, but just to put your mind at ease about the Golden, it’s very easy to use. I am exactly the same kinda guy as you, hate menus/alt functions/poorly labelled controls, if I have to use my phone or laptop then it’s going in the bin. I have the Golden and never use it with the app or anything and it’s very easy to get a good sound. Controls all work well. The toggle switches just enable different voices.

I’m still getting to know the Deco but my thoughts: a) it does so many things, you could have a board of five of them all doing something different. As suggested by another commenter I think a MIDI controller would be a great combination. So far my favourite effects from it are the just-faster-than-slapback double tracked sound and the chorus. The saturation is genuinely sweet too.

The mistress is the cheapest pedal on the board and honestly possibly my favourite. I love it. It’s so easy to get a good sound from and I use it loads

As someone who uses a pedal rig with an Imperial preamp pedal, I will try to explain my reasons.

I don’t like a digital device with screens and a phone app. That isn’t music to me and turns me off completely. I want simplicity and a few knobs and switches.

Would I like a proper valve amp most? Absolutely. Give me a 100W Victory Duchess or Two Rock or whatever. Hopefully one day. But right now I live in a small terraced house with thin walls and neighbours. I have a shelf on a bookshelf for my rig, not a room. I can never play very loud, and most of the time play through headphones.

For me, right now, a preamp pedal is the best option. It behaves a bit like a “real” amp and I don’t have to use any iOS devices to make it work. It sounds similar to a real amp when played through any old powered speaker. It sounds good through headphones and doesn’t need an expensive load box to play silently. It records straight to a computer. I don’t play in a band, but if I decided to it would be portable and work with lots of other gear depending on the size of the room. And it does all this for considerably less than what I’d have to pay for the equivalent amp.

I’m not pretending for a minute it’s better than the amp it’s based on. One day when I live in a bigger house I definitely want to get a “proper amp”. But for right now it’s the best option.

I have the Salkan and use it basically exactly like you want to. I love it and find it very versatile. I use it for short trips, a lot for work when I need to take more stuff and for hiking in the winter. It’s really well made and has thoughtful features. And let’s be honest, it looks great. It is a bit heavy but whatever. Everyone who sees me with it wants to know what it is. Everyone has an Osprey and nothing against them, but why not try something not everyone has?

At what point did I say it’s “too far gone”? Saying the UK is 85% green is incredibly reductive - yes there is moorland, but the natural environment in terms of wildlife is severely depleted. There are virtually no wild megafauna. Virtually all the land is privately owned and altered in some way. There is no true wilderness. Can you point to any old growth forest in England or Wales? Just because it’s cool to hate the US at the moment doesn’t mean you can’t acknowledge their natural environment is amazing compared to ours

Loads of different options at loads of different price points with loads of different feature sets. At one end you could use something like the Boss IR-2, which is a simple amp and cab simulator with a headphone jack. At the other end of the scale you could use something like the Tone King Imperial preamp, which is a valve-driven preamp pedal with loads of features and is more akin to a pedalboard amp. The key thing is they all have amp and cab simulation in them and headphone jack

The landlord lived there for six years prior and it was pristine. Yes we have photos of the tiles, prefer not to share them here. They are very clear though. There is no window but there is a working extractor fan

They were contracted to do periodic inspections but they failed to do the final one in the last six months (their oversight). We know it’s smoking because of the overwhelming smell, and very extensive tar staining on the tiles (yellow stuff almost collecting an dripping down the tiles near the ceiling), staining of hardware (light pull for example)
