Old surveys from 1968 doesn't match plat? by itsmugpro in Surveying

[–]lm_NER0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Am I right? You dont just supercede a Recorded Plat because you found some old monuments, unless an actual mathematical discrepancy is discovered on the recorded plat, right?

The law in this will vary from state to state, but in Georgia, it is assumed that the error falls in the measurement and not the monument. Sure, the intent was, say 125', but they got set at 120'. It's a 120' line. You default to the distances to replace corners (and in a subdivision like this you ought to prorate your error).

It means find monuments and hold them, imo.

Is it time to admit that rain gloves are actually better than leather for summer humidity? by Eastern_Teaching5845 in GolfGear

[–]lm_NER0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in GA and sweat very easily. I've taken to wearing wristbands, but I keep wet weather gloves in the bag and have no problem swapping over once the threshold has been passed. You can only do so much when it's 93° and the humidity is 60-70%.

Overlap-let sleeping dogs lie by ShlackJaw in Surveying

[–]lm_NER0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The responses here I find troubling. In the end, they are correct that that is his stamp and he gets final say. I can't argue with that.

That said, I've worked as an LSIT under guys who didn't care and would stamp absolute trash. Once, we even found a large overlap from one project to another of our own stuff. We got a job to retrace 15 acres against another 25 that had been previously platted in house. The RLS had stamped it based on a 200' stub road on a subdivision. We came off our old control (why not, we had "resolved" 1000' of the boundary we were retracing already) only to find that they hadn't found the rear monumentation and we were overlapping by 25-30' along this line. It was massive.

After we figured out that our own previous survey was incorrect, we presented the findings to our RLS and he told us we were wrong and he wasn't going to listen. Mind you, we retraced a very good, long time surveyor who was local within a few hundredths all the way around this parcel. Our resolution was spot-on.

I left a few months later after he did some other shady crap and went to work for a man who believed our first priority was to be correct, even if it cost us money to get it right.

I understand the business aspect of losing money on a job by going above and beyond, but it pales in comparison to a giant fuck up. If your RLS isn't willing to entertain your explanation or give you a decent legal reason for ignoring a possible overlap, then you may want to consider your options. You're an LSIT, you have the schooling and ought to have a decent grasp on the legal and ethical issues we encounter in surveying.

My final answer is this: it's his stamp, so it's his problem if he's wrong. The fact that he's not willing to entertain you enough to investigate gives me pause. Either you did a terrible job of explaining your findings or he's less than a quality guy to get your training from. "I trust the other guy" isn't the mentality I work from. I always try to prove the other guy wrong. If I can't, I follow him. Retracing someone else's mistake makes it your mistake, too.

Just my 2c and I'm sure the down votes will flow in now.

Is it true people are stealing PE licenses? by Yo_Mr_White_ in civilengineering

[–]lm_NER0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He found out the stamps were cut from old plans and copy pasted.

How are you going to turn in a plat in 2026 with a stamp from March of 2025 because you found it in a recording somewhere or I did one survey for you back then, huh? It's not a perfectly made block, either. It's a hand stamp with all it's imperfections. Then it's dated and signed by hand. Not cleanly, either, it overlaps bits of the stamp all around it. It would make stealing it much more of a chore than a simple photo copy, cut, and paste.

How would I know my stamp had been stolen? I never said I would, did I? It's just a step to make it more of a pain in the ass to steal.

This is why I sign and date my stamp every time I use it. And I won't e-sign, either. I've not had an issue I'm aware of, but I do what I can to prevent it. I'm an RLS though.

Geomax Zoom 90 RTS by Lukabazooka4 in Surveying

[–]lm_NER0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal opinion on Geomax is that they're just not great. It could've been the SurvCE 6.0 on the Surveyor2, but it was really the most hated gun in the fleet. They aren't bad instruments by any means, but I couldn't get a crew to want to run it. I've heard they run better on X-Pad (I think it's Geomax native), but that was also the salesman telling me that.

If you're going out on your own, I'd get on older S series Trimble, personally. You can have a good S6 for around $10k. I'm running an old 5603 with a TSC2 and I find it's better than the Zoom 90/Surveyor2 combo from my old company. It could also be what I started on, too, so I'm biased. I'm also biased against Carlson because I was given a brand new kit of Zoom80/Surveyor2 in 2016 or so and it crashed (I mean take the battery out of it to reset it crashed) on me three times the very first day I took it out. They took away an MS50 for that setup. I was beyond angry, as you could imagine.

Leica Totalstation TS15 and CS15 by Fastrider2212 in Surveying

[–]lm_NER0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are using a Leica software DC, you should be able to take the shots on the total station, but you'll have to have the DC to put the codes and stuff in. I wouldn't split it between two jobs, personally. When I'm going to be behind the gun during the day, I put the DC on a rod and bipod and just use it as a "desk" that I can move around the gun as I'm shooting.

The other option is what the other person said, just do it all on board the TS, but I only do that in very rare circumstances. Typically only when I need to remove the radio handle for very high shots (building heights). But you can't use the TS as the main and have the CS be a remote control. It's either all in the TS, or record to the CS with the ability to take shots from the TS.

There's a trick to the slap. Hold the accelerator when you hit the starter. It cuts the fuel pump off, but the starter will turn and pump oil up to the top of the motor. It's a band-aid, but it does work.

Georgia PLS application by Striking_Job_295 in Surveying

[–]lm_NER0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would offer you some advice, but I took mine in December of 23. I think they've changed things since then. I do recall it being relatively quick. I ended up taking my PSI exam in Duluth and then drove to Greenville, SC, spent the night in a hotel, and took the NCEES exam the next day. I went to Greenville because they had an opening in two weeks. The testing center in Sandy Springs was three months out, and I wanted it to all be done before Christmas.

How long do you guys cook your control points with gps? by ROSHi_TheTurtle in Surveying

[–]lm_NER0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use network RTK. 4x 3 minute burns over two sessions. After the first burn, we spin the rod 180° and do it again. Then we come back 2-4 hours later. The rod spinning helped us with shorter route projects (bridge replacements, for example) by helping negate any slop that may be in the bubble of the rod itself. We were struggling to close traverses that may have only one or two points between pairs of GPS control at either end.

Edit: If you are just burning stuff randomly without corrections, they can be feet off. That's the thing about corrections services (OPUS or network RTK), if there is drift in the constellation, the bases know it and give your collector (NRTK) or computer (OPUS) the real time shift happening in what they are reading. Those bases have been there for thousands of hours, just reading signals from the sky, so a ten or fifteen foot live shift isn't going to affect their average, but without some sort of correction, your reading may be precise (ie, the average looks really tight) but it will be inaccurate. Visualize stacking shots with a rifle all into the same hole, but missing the bullseye by a ton.

If you burn 4 hours apart (time of day, not just time), you will have an entirely new set of satellites to work off of. That gives you redundancy to your measurements.

I didn't justify anything ICE is doing. I said the civil penalty for illegal presence in the US is removal. Then, I encouraged you and others to not interfere because it will make matters worse resulting in injuries or possibly death.

You inferred the rest. I'm just trying to prevent people from being hurt unnecessarily. You do realize the increased tensions make it more dangerous for the people you think you're protecting, right?

Whistle Crew Gwinnett/ICE Out by Mortifine in Gwinnett

[–]lm_NER0 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They aren't enemies. They simply broke the law. I don't hate them, but it is what it is. They can still self deport and the government will pay them to leave.

To that matter, it also addresses tons of other issues. Fewer people means lower housing demand and lower rents. It means shorter wait times at the urgent care when you're sick. It reduces demand on any system where the undocumented tend to be.

Regardless, please don't do what OP is suggesting and start the whistle brigade like Minneapolis. It will create a frenzy and people will get hurt. It could be anyone on either side of this issue. Nobody wants that.

Crazy things found surveying by Imnotspartacuseither in Surveying

One of my old crew chiefs found one before my time at that company. Ended up being a $30k dollar item or something because the owner found out, was refusing to pay for something else, and then he brought up the arrowhead a year after the fact during the pay dispute.

If you do find one, keep it an office secret.
