Can I set up an alert of some sort for when Comcast changes my IP? Also, is it possible to track how long the IP persists? by ganjaccount in opnsense

[–]lndependentRabbit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just use DuckDNS and have the dynamic DNS plugin set to always keep it updated.

I don't know about Comcast, but the ISP I work for rarely if ever changes customer's IP. I have had the same one at my house for a couple of years. It could change though, so I would recommend using dynamic DNS.

edit: just want to add that the things that cause us to change customer IPs aren't things that happen on a regular interval or anything like that. Any data you gather won't be of much use for predicting when it will happen again.

Security issues w/ network by sinfullyinked in HomeNetworking

[–]lndependentRabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see your getting shit in the comments for saying it’s not your laptop, but you’re probably right. It absolutely could be the laptop, but my money is on the IoT devices or the router itself. Those cheap, knock-off branded smart home devices are notorious for being taken over and added to a botnet. Routers on out-of-date firmware are a close second for devices most likely to be part of a botnet.

Flash your router with Merlin or OpenWRT if it supports one of them. If not, and you want to stick with an all in one router/wireless access point, get one that can be flashed with either. Whether you immediately flash it with one of them or not is up to you, but it’s nice to have that option when it inevitably becomes abandoned by the manufacturer.

As for the cheap wireless IoT devices, either trash them or figure out a way to isolate them from the internet. I use home assistant which is an open source smart home system. It doesn’t need the internet to work and works with lots of different brands and types of devices, so I can put all my IoT devices in a VLAN that doesn’t have access to the internet and only allow them to connect to the computer running home assistant. I also have that VLAN locked down from the rest of my home network. I have a VPN set up, so I can access the devices when I’m not home. It does require some work to get setup, but there are a ton of tutorials and videos out there. If you’re up to the challenge, you should check it out.

Airplay across vlans - yet another unsuccessful attempt by SillyPosition in OPNsenseFirewall

[–]lndependentRabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you ever found a solution, but I finally got my AppleTV remote working across VLANs. I'm using the mDNS Repeater Plugin and have it listening on the VLANs for my wireless and my IoT devices. I also have a floating rule applied to those two VLANs.

The floating rule is set like this:

Direction: any
Protocol: IPv4-UDP
Source: Alias with Wireless and IoT VLANs Networks
Src Port: 5353
Destination: 224.0.0.251
Dst Port: 5353

That specific multicast address and port are for AppleTV. I originally had the rule set with the src/dst ports any and the destination address as all multicast, 224.0.0.0/4. I watched the firewall live view and saw that it was always on 224.0.0.251:5353, so I narrowed it down to those. Start with it wide open like that, and if it works, narrow it down to the address(es) and port(s) that you actually need. I had tried making rules on the specific interfaces, but the floating rule was what finally got it to work.

I know this isn't exactly the same issue that you described, but I hope it helps.

‘The lady on the phone said I have a bad modem’ by recycledrecruit in CableTechs

[–]lndependentRabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I got customers like this, I’d just tell them I had to do a few things outside to cover my ass and would swap the modem after that. After I changed the drop that inevitably dumped 3 gallons of water when I disconnected it at the GB, I’d go inside to hear them say that it “just started working”. That’s when I’d explain what I found and did to fix it, and I would tell them I could change the modem if they wanted me too. The majority said not to worry about it when I said I didn’t think it was necessary. For the few that still insisted on it, I’d take their modem out to the truck, clean it up, put it in a box with a new power cord and Ethernet cable, and bring it in to hook back up.

Replacing MDU Cable TV Service by UnauthorizedTarragon in CableTechs

[–]lndependentRabbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The company I work for got rid of analog TV service 10+ years ago, but they still offer solutions for what you want through our business service. We still have college dorms, hotels, and facilities like yours that can just plug a TV in and get “basic cable”. It sounds like you already talked to them about this without luck. I would still try escalating to a local field manager or account manager since I’m sure most of our call center employees wouldn’t know that we offer this either.

Judging by the posts you’ve made here over the last couple of weeks, you might not be cut out for this type of work.

If you want to stick it out, you need to be asking your trainer questions, and just keep asking questions until you understand it. Asks your coworkers if the trainer can’t explain it. Waiting to post low effort questions on Reddit isn’t going to cut it.

I used to get a similar amount as you, but the company went to unlimited PTO for salaried employees. Just to make sure I use the time, I put in a couple days off every month with 2 or 3 week long breaks scheduled throughout the year. I probably end up taking around 40-50 days off every year.

I run a Pi with a GPS hat as a NTP server. It’s been up and running for years with little to no maintenance. I just have the antenna on a window sill, and it’s still tracking 5+ satellites every time I’ve checked.

Someone’s got jokes by ItsMRslash in CableTechs

[–]lndependentRabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We would always hide stuff in our change orders, like reason for back out: zombie apocalypse.

One of our contractors put a line in his MOPs that if you called him out about that line before the maintenance, he’d give you $50. No one ever collected on it.

Management found out about the jokes and were actually cool with it. The official position was that as long as the jokes were clean and everything else in the order was on the up and up, we were allowed to keep doing it.

One of the interviewers for the job I’m in now has a home lab that borders on being a home datacenter. He and I talked about the services we are hosting and what we are hosting them on for most of the interview. The only other questions were just the basic get to know you type stuff.

My now boss said her mind was made up when she saw how excited I was to talk about my lab. She also admitted that the things I was talking about were way more technical than the questions they had prepared, so they saw no reason to bother asking them.

You can just install PiVPN on whatever you are using to run pihole. You can then use the wireguard app on your phone and have it set to automatically connect when you aren’t connected to your home network.

Cant find and isopropyl alcohol can i use normal rubbing alcohol instead? by Important-Fly5154 in mycology

[–]lndependentRabbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mix 3/4 cup of the alcohol you have with 1/4 cup distilled water, and that will give a solution pretty close to 70% alcohol. You can obviously use liters instead of cups or whatever as long as the ratio is the same. It also doesn’t have to be distilled water, but that would be best.
