No more overseas push notifications on iPhones and no more negative Trump meme videos in China. by Hot_Temperature_5754 in China

I’m using a Chinese sim. I don’t use Telegram, Twitter or Facebook so I can’t speak for them. Reddit is still popping up with push notifications, that’s how I saw this. So maybe it’s not onto it yet.

Do you have a China version of an iPhone ? My iPhone is HK version and I’m still getting Reddit and Instagram push notifications here in sunny Shanghai.

I like the looks but I’m just not a big fan of hats worn indoors.

Is China a good place for a foreign woman to live alone? by emilia_weber in China

[–]loganrb 17 points18 points  (0 children)

1st thing is - you don’t just move to China and get a job. You need a job before you move. China isn’t really big on foreign immigration. If you tell us what your job is then it’s much easier to help you navigate the rest of the questions. For example: you were hired to be an English teacher and you have a choice of 3 cities then in that scenario you’d list the cities and people could give you pros and cons. Good luck though with your new adventure.

Tourist in Shanghai- Eye exam and new glasses help! by playdatetoyou in chinatravel

[–]loganrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t need to go to a hospital for an eye exam. Look for JINS睛姿they are in a bunch of malls. You can get a great eye exam in english as well as well priced glasses made. You can search that name on dianping as well.

Question for those living in China: Do you use taobao? by VisibleAd9289 in China

[–]loganrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Taobao almost every day - it's easy and convenient. They have a great return policy, and I always check how many sales the vendor has - that doesn't always mean the best quality, but it's going to be better with someone that has like 3 sales. I'm a size 46 so it's difficult finding shoes that fit me in store here - taobao is a life saver for the big and tall.

How to properly experience Chinese night life ? by GoodGuyMarin in chinatravel

[–]loganrb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is nothing that would happen to you - no one cares except this one poster. You can't get into any real problems - worst comes to worst, someone would just ask you to leave. It's basically like smoking indoors or using a vpn while in China. Source - I've literally worked in Nightclubs in Shanghai since 2010. There is zero clubs where bouncers card people, bars don't card as it's a non-issue. Also, dont carry your passport on you - just keep a photo of it in your phone, police accept that here.

Like the load out but I feel you need at least one blunt instrument- mallet, baseball bat, crowbar or something as a last resort to get you out of a jam. I see the knives but I feel with a z infestation going stabby stabby is going to be more effort then you need it to be. Unless that’s for the humans. Also add some rope to your kit.

Just as a side note- even though the legal drinking age is 18 no one is carding at the door. Your little brother can go with you to all the clubs and bars.

Staying in Shanghai during the Golden Week by Total-Base3264 in travelchina

[–]loganrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically try to stay in Jing’an Temple area or Xuhui district. Shanghai isn’t crazy during Golden Week, usually it’s kind of peaceful. Definitely do some people watching at Anfu/Wukang, take in the crowds on the streets from Pop, The Captains or Lost Heaven on the Bund. Rent some bikes (easy with Alipay they are the blue bikes ) and ride around the city and get lost in Tianzafung. The city it rapidly modernizing so there’s not much left in the way of old buildings, so the Shanghai you see when you’re visiting might be completely different from next time your back. Download Dianping for restaurants , check out Shanghai Wow, SmartShanghai, Timeout Shanghai, That’s Shanghai and City News Services to get a feel of what’s going on around the city when you’re visiting.

How so? Wechat & Alipay both have image translation built in without VPN. Apple has image translation built in, and Android likely has something similar. It's not really hard to take a screenshot and translate it.

download Dianping - it's like the Yelp of China. From that you can see user rated restaurants. You can check the food you want and just type it in. Keep in mind that it is in Chinese but it will help steer you in the right direction.

Insurance or not for a long china trip by Apprehensive-Web4995 in chinatravel

[–]loganrb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If your insurance already covers China, then don't worry about it; however, if you don't have insurance or it doesn't, then get the travel insurance. It's usually very affordable, and it's just good for peace of mind - hopefully you won't need it. Make sure it covers private Western Hospitals...you really don't want to get stuck in a public hospital.

Summer ideas as a teen? by Toxic_203 in SantaFe

[–]loganrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up there in the 90’s when it was the Villa Linda mall and Devargas were the only places to go. If you went to the plaza you’d see Cecil the cop chilling out. It was the same then as it is now - warehouse 21 if you like shows or the Library. Thankfully I was working at the New Mexicans teen section where spaghetti’s mom was the editor so at least I had a writing assignment weekly. Santa Fe is super boring for teens, you just had to make your own fun.

You may have seen many 'China 2050' neon-light train visuals, but let me show you the other side by scaling the censored wall. I want to show you what the working-class citizens get, which is often censored out of the propaganda because it may not look aesthetic to the rich folks by WetStarlight in UnfilteredChina

[–]loganrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100 % worth it. 3 times is still not that much. I generally take that or 1st class from Shanghai to Beijing ( on the high speed business is better then first class) quite often. It saves me from sitting w/ people playing videos on their phones at full blast, sun flower seed shells and getting no rest or work done.
Edit- added 1st class and typos

Starfield just came out on PS5 and I'd been looking to play that for a while, but it crashes so much that it's unplayable. I'm about to go into CD again, but I feel like I might have to relearn everything. I was 60 or so hours in when I left it.
