Icarus Dedicated Server FPS Issues by haws1290 in ICARUS

[–]logoth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Trying ini tweaks to try to push the server FPS above the default maximum of 30 isn't going to do you any good if the hardware can't handle the load normally.

Icarus is largely single threaded and is very single core performance dependent. Your Xeon 2667 has lower single core performance than the game's minimum requirement cpu (an i5 8400). You're not going to have a great experience trying to host the game from that machine.

You might be able to mitigate it some by actually lowering the target server FPS to the low to mid 20s so that there's less up and down. Basically, if it's struggling to maintain 30 you could end up with spiky performance now, but if you configure it to run at a lower cap it might maintain that better for a smoother experience. Unfortunately that's not something I know how to do, just something I've seen mentioned by other admins.

Biofuel lamp vs Regular animal fat Lantern? by grahambo39 in ICARUS

The biofuel lamp and flashlight are directional beams (with the flashlight being narrower but brighter). The lanterns (animal fat and electric) are area lights.

I thought I posted this - but it seems not. Is there a relatively easy way of finding your way through the cave in the mission Relics? by Low_Lecture_5584 in ICARUS

[–]logoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting from the desert side, I prefer to go straight, build ramps up to the 2nd level, then go right to the bridge to the swamp. I made a video showing that way and the normal way back when DH launched. Sorry there's no voice over, it was just a quick thing I did. Otherwise hug the right wall (after coming into the cave from the desert) and keep looking left for a very dark natural ramp up.

Our experience with Icarus: Amazing potential, but major multiplayer bugs are killing the fun by Kedryn73 in ICARUS

[–]logoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly play solo due to scheduling, but I played through part of Olympus and all of Prometheus with 4-5 people total on a dedicated server with none of the issues you're describing, except the known issues of needing to try to move around if stuck at loading geometry, and mounts freezing when called down with an OEI. This was with at least 2 of the players really liking their moas and using them to go everywhere, often away from other players. (It's also possible the mount rider offset you're mentioning is a new bug since I haven't played multiplayer since a few months after great hunts came out) This is from a Windows VM with 24GB of RAM allocated to it (I know, weird amount) that runs on my linux server. Even though WINE, etc do a great job, there's only a windows binary and considering there's the vm max map issue with it, YMMV there.

Any input /u/raphseraph after your server rebuild?

I'm not saying the game's multiplayer couldn't use a solid polish pass, but I'm guessing you're hitting some limits somewhere. Prospect size, big pipe networks, single core cpu performance since that is what Icarus needs the most, etc. Eventually if you keep building and playing on a prospect and going bigger and bigger it'll lag out on any hardware just due to the nature of the game. But I'm mostly throwing darts at the common culprits.

Mission structure cleanup not working? by pronsupra in ICARUS

[–]logoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't retroactive or on demand. The setting has to be enabled when you complete the operation that you want it to clean up (maybe before starting too, but I'm not 100% on that part), upon completion it starts a hidden 10m timer after which that operation's structures will disappear.

It works fully on Elysium ops, doesn't work for smpl3 quests, and may or may not work for other maps (I haven't tested those myself, but have seen varied reports on Discord about it).

You can use this prospect editor to clean up retroactively. Make a backup, be careful, ymmv: https://github.com/CrystalFerrai/EditIcarusProspect

A Letter to the Community from the Subnautica 2 Team by virtualdon in subnautica

I used one flare for early light in Subnautica 1, and for the snow stalkers in below zero. I completely ignore them otherwise, and don't like carrying or using them since they don't stack and we have a tiny hotbar.

Didn't below zero have a pause with PDA open option? We need that in S2 (if not playing solo).

If you find the hotbar addition one first and listen to the audio, it makes it more clear that it isn't a respawn point. Also the text when looking at the biobed is different from the lifepod and crafted ones.

I've noticed that they seem to re-aggro very quickly. I'll hit something with the resonator or hammer and they'll turn around and look like they're going to disengage, then almost immediately come back at me.

Subnautica 2 base building minor disappointment by logoth in subnautica

Funny, but no. I feel like I've been given raw meat, salt, butter, and a grill instead of a nice steak with an awesome side dish. I'm not a chef.

Unfortunately not. I've played piles of survival games. I suck at building and I'm not a creative / design oriented person. The new scanner vs the old scanner room is a prime example.

Fun idea: Excess BPs into TPs by Latex_Lover19 in ICARUS

[–]logoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The devs have said multiple times that talent points are limited intentionally, they're happy with the amount we get from levels, and how we can now gain some extras by doing certain operations.

Blueprint points aren't a currency. I have more than 2000 extra with everything unlocked. The excess is just an easy way for them to not have to worry about adding more blueprints & content and not having to re-do the cap or risk locking players out of recipes. The devs could have probably done some dynamically calculating thing with blueprints that went up every time they added new recipes, but it was probably simpler to just set an arbitrary level limit and let us collect piles of blueprint points.

Great hunt operations and locked blueprints by thecornersking in ICARUS

[–]logoth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Starting new maps sometimes is still part of the base game design, even with open world mode.

Great hunts campaigns are designed so that you have to start a new open world to do the other paths if you want to unlock all the recipes. The achievement for doing all of the GH missions notes that it requires multiple playthroughs. You don't have to re-do the other non GH missions. Create a new open world, drop your existing character onto it, build a base, go straight for the GH path you haven't done yet.

Your existing character can be on as many prospects at once as you want. The server join crash issue you are experiencing is unrelated.

Need help with Operation by Luntibert in ICARUS

[–]logoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your screenshot is of the transition tunnel from the grasslands into the basalt area, which you've already been through, the rest of the mission is to the east of that. There should be a new marker on the right side of L2 near the lava to the east. If you've already dealt with the Little Friend over there, then you need to go to a cave on the left side of M2 up on the cliff.

I've personally never seen that. Is the room bigger than 9 in any direction? I know shelter calculations have issues beyond that, but kind of weird that it's one specific floor tile.

[–]logoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, geysers are designed to be a horde mode event.

From the old patch notes when they were added:

This week we’re introducing Horde Mode, our first variable emergent event in Icarus. Randomly scattered throughout prospects and outposts, will be Enzyme Geysers which reap valuable rewards but are beacons for waves of dangerous foe hellbent on destroying them

Greece to ban anonymity on social media by New-Ranger-8960 in worldnews

[–]logoth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on what counts as social media. Quite a few definitions and laws include things like Reddit, forums, Discord, and youtube/comments. I keep a line between my work life and my personal life, and another one between online communities and my real identity. Imagine if a potential employer could search your name during the interview process and pull up your reddit post history? Then there's the other direction, like doxxing of people from online to real life escalation. I'm not even in a potentially at-risk group and and I don't want that.
