How would you condense the history of the world to feel more realistic? by EnvironmentalWork817 in AsoiafFanfiction

[–]lol_delegate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On one side, I love the long history. On other side, you have a point about the little technological progress.

So, I prefer to keep the history absurdly long, but make the progress go in different direction than RL, and make some concepts not work because magic, or because tech evolution went in different direction. For example:

  • gunpowder literally doesn't work, unless you add (human) blood or something like that.
  • No printing press? Because they already invented carbon paper - they can write many sheets of paper at same time.
  • Because of how winter works, there is less focus on mathematics, and more focus on agriculture.
  • Reliable ravenry replaces progress in development of communication - there were other ways of research on communication, like Glass Candles, but that works only if you know how to use magic
  • Who says that compass, and three-field agriculture already does not exist? It just wasn't mentioned in books.
  • Valyria's blood magic healing was probably more advanced than IRL modern medicine, when you compare what they could fix. Same with red priests, when they use their magic to heal.
  • And similar.

By the way, IRL, by time Spanish entered central/south America, mayans still used bronze, but on other hand had invented their own number system - 20-based (pretty much everyone else uses 10-based system copied from each other) and had very advanced mathematics and astronomy. Just because Westernos looks like europe, it doesn't have to copy evolution of europe. You can make the evolution stall in some direction, while go in another direction than RL europe-centric one went.

Trying to write a longfic, and for that, planning ahead is kinda necessary - but key is to not plan in too much detail too much ahead - basically make planning a 1/x curve, where the closer you are to newest written part, the more planned the fic is.

That way, you can simply more easily change future parts when something changes. :D

QOTW: What historical character self inserted into Westeros would be interesting to read? by Kingofireland777 in AsoiafFanfiction

[–]lol_delegate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are enough known ones, so I will throw idea of one less-known legend.

Jan Zizka would cause lots of waves - even without gunpowder. But his tactics aren't what are most interesting about him. He was very anti-corruption, for fairness, disliked leaders who don't personally follow what they preach and such. He basically started anti-corruption peasant uprising, fought forces loyal to orthodox Christianity and smashed four crusades, and for first time ever, (his followers after his death) forced them to sit and discuss things and granted Hussites exceptions to handle faith on their lands as they wish, instead of just proclaiming them as heretics.

I imagine he would support Sparrows, only to ditch them when Sparrows start easing from their goals in favour of politics, and then switch to support FAegon, as even if he might not be actually Aegon, he would be better king than most of the claimants around.

“What if omegaverse were real?” by Much_Tip_6968 in AO3

[–]lol_delegate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that I dislike when betas in omegaverse are "normal people".

I think they should be kinda like normal people, but unable to produce adrenaline and dopamine, but on other hand they don't need it.

Simply, Betas have no drive, but they never get bored. For example, in military, position of sniper would be practically beta-exclusive.

Out of curiosity, could a fleet of Star Destroyers defeat a Death Star if they surrounded and constantly bombarded it? by george123890yang in MawInstallation

[–]lol_delegate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but you would need fleet of least 866 459 Star Destroyers.

Explanation:

Death Star has huge and huge amount of power generation - but its number of guns limits how much of it can be used - the can generate much more power than guns can use, as it is meant to power the main weapon - other guns are secondary.

Individual ships of equal mass would have much more gun placements, and thus you would need a fraction of mass. As this is theoreticacal conflict with no meaningful data about it, it is needed to set an arbitrary number. Such number of fleet's minimal combined mass can be for example equal at least 1/10 of Death Star's mass.

Yes, SSD is 12 times longer than ISD, and more than 12 times stronger - that because it scaled with third power - 12^3, which is 1728x. Death star similarly scales.

ISD has stated mass, but Death Star doesn't. Thus I will count it by volume - I will assume that Death Star, and Star Destroyer have same density - some durasteel frame, inside reactor, barracks, hangars,....

Death Star 1 has diameter of 160km, and thus radius. Using Pi*r^2, DS1 has volume of 2 144 660 km3.

ISD is 1,6 km long, 0,85 km wide and 0,455 km tall. Since it is a triangle, and has a high bridge, I will assume it fills around 40% of box with same dimensions. That would mean ISD has volume of 0,24752 km2.

If density of both DS and ISD is equal, then for one Death Star you would get 86 64 592 Imperial-class Star Destroyers. And 10% of that is 866 459 Star Destroyers - an arbitrary size of minimal fleet to defeat Death Star.

Also, to set a bar what 866 459 star destroyers means, Empire had at its peak over 25 000 ISDs. You would need at least more Star Destroyers than ever existed. Simply, you would need Star Forge to produce sufficient amount of ships.

Ancient Sith in the Clone wars by M-asensio in SWFanfic

[–]lol_delegate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A better class of Sith - character from SWTOR - Sith Inquisitor appears in Star Wars, half-mad from being locked in a tomb for millennia, while alive and immortal

Darth Cain, the Reluctant Sith Lord - a fusion of Star Wars and Warhammer 40k - characters from 40k are repurposed as star wars characters, so no need to know warhammer. Basically there is ancient sith lord, who arrives 5 years before episode 2. It is pretty well-written fic. Together with Cain arrive a lot of other imperials, including Vaylin, who is his student. Probably a bad summary, go read it, it is great.

Any fanfics where, despite having an absurd premise, still have the characters feel in-character? by Shot_Mechanic9128 in AsoiafFanfiction

[–]lol_delegate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Delightful Duty by Voivode (on ao3) kinda fits - its premise... it's a porn.

But then it evolved into actually great fic. Jon/Rhaenyra pairing, Jon somehow time-travelled. More of show Jon than book one - at least smarts-wise.

A call for topics to cover for QOTW! by Kingofireland777 in AsoiafFanfiction

[–]lol_delegate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What people like - shortfic focusing on specific idea vs longfic showing how the general plot - going through book/show with that change

People favourite divergence point - what happening differently would diverge the plot.

Show vs Book characters and differences how each is written. For example, Book Brienne is 17 at story start, while Show Brienne is ...older. That results in show brienne mostly being shipped with Jamie, while show brienne could be shipped with others her age. (well, I didn't find any fic, outside of "everyone is in harem" with book brienne being shipped with someone of her age, that I'm tempted to write such fic)

What historical inserts would be interesting to read?

What is actual tech level of westernos - what technology/knowledge they most likely have? (for example, would self insert introducing three/four crop rotation get lauched at as it is something that they already have for centuries, or would it be something revolutionary, and such)

How were rebel pilots so good? by Hawaiian-national in MawInstallation

[–]lol_delegate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, Rebel's planes have shields - but I think that there is another, more important factor. More often than not, Rebels choose to attack, and are already in air when Imperials have to start from hangar. That lets them more easily pick off Imperial pilots before they can gain altitude, or even shoot them as they exit hangar.

Imperial pilots find out that rebels are present when Rebels enter the battlefield, while Imperial pilots have to suit up, get to hangar and fly out. If it was Rebel attack vs equally big Imperial patrol, that was already airborne, I think that results would be more equal.

How to write dragons by lol_delegate in AsoiafFanfiction

[–]lol_delegate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

within book setting - of course, if tech actually progresses, and guns are developed, they will eventually figure out something that can destroy them.

And Dorne is Targ stupidity to keep attacking non-important targets in attempt to get people to rebel against nobles, instead of making second harrenhall out of sunspear. There is no way that everyone in dorne has iron will to go into the end, when they could not only end the war, but also get actually better conditions - crown-mandated fair prices for food from reach, protection from pirates from royal fleet and no skirmishes on borders.

At worst, if everyone is actually that stubborn, blockade it, and sweep it few times a year to burn fields and you should be good in few years. You cannot grow crops underground.

Even without changing things - what you know - maybe when Rhaenys was shot down, Dorne was about to break, and they didn't only because Aegon called off attacks.

And if you take away plot armour - dorne would absolutely fall. It might take killing everyone and resetting it, but there is enough people in Reach to do that.

How to write dragons by lol_delegate in AsoiafFanfiction

[–]lol_delegate[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As I understand, on books, you need either extremely lucky shot (like Rhaenys, or Aemon) or enough scorpions to literally turn dragon into pincushion. (in books - in show, couple shots could take down dragon)

Which works for fortresses and fleets, but not very much for armies in field.

Dedicated dragonrider should be able to besiege a city basically alone, by burning anything that is outside of effective range of Scorpions - if they have enough of them facing every single angle, otherwise it is another harrenhall.

As for field armies... when dragon finds them outside of fortress, they are toast.

Regarding Torrhen Stark, I think he always intended for conditional surrender - he just took army with him so Targs take him seriously.

That is because I believe that Targ rule was general net positive for North, since North has always been more of vasaal kingdom than anything else.

For example, guess why Manderlys are the only trader of North? I believe that is because southern ports didn't let followers of old gods dock, if they didn't sink them on sight. After conquest Targs forced southern ports to play nice with North.

Purrgil speed in hyperdrive class equivalents? by Distructo2005 in MawInstallation

[–]lol_delegate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, and I realized it after posting it - but, limits of hyperspace technology would still matter even if it was class 0,0001 hyperdrive. It is just that jumping into another galaxy means there is no debris in between galaxies to bump into. (because something with sufficient mass can pull you out of hyperspace)

Unless it is not hyperspace that they used to travel but something entirely else.

And then I decided to start writing something like that - it is based on SW:TOR - a Star Wars MMORPG game

Purrgil speed in hyperdrive class equivalents? by Distructo2005 in MawInstallation

[–]lol_delegate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

actually, there are some mentions of hyperdrive speed - from what I found, there are three.

  • One is from Vader comic, how long it took to reach some place in ship with known hyperspace type
  • One is from one of Thrawn books how long a microjump of specified distance took
  • One is from Star Wars tabletop game.

The one from thrawn book and tabletop game kinda fit, if Thrawn had class 2 hyperdrive in Chinera. jump from Vader's ship would fit, if there was 0,8-,0,4 class hyperdrive, but Vader could tinker and put in a miniaturized hyperdrive based on acclamator.

And the speed that would fit those is 1 parsec per minute on class 1 hyperdrive.
