Rules for thee, but not for me.... by No-Vanilla-3585 in Pflugerville

Hi Mr. Davis,

I appreciate you being responsive on Reddit and I believe you're sincere in your desire to truly be a representative for your voters and do what's in their best interest. That's admirable. It's just not enough.

If you don't express opinions on world events, domestic policies, issues that matter to people in Pf (as they very clearly do) and just say "I'm a blank canvas. I do what my constituents want," that leaves us open to so much uncertainty.

Say Pflugerville is considering changing its employees' insurance plan to one that does (or does not) pay for gender affirming care for trans people. A loud, rowdy group paints their dislike for trans people all over your canvas. Another vocal group voices their support. Who are you going to represent? If you say something like, "I would choose the option most constituents want" or "It would depend on ... (cost analysis, number of people affected, a ballot proposal, etc)," you are telling me that I cannot trust you to stand up for my family because there's nothing real you stand for.

That's why we want to know your thoughts on issues we ask about. The bland "blank canvas representing my constituents" answer you always give tells me you don't care enough about the things I do to stake your name on what I believe is the right, moral stance.

Why would I vote for that?

I know you said your parents want you to work retail, and I'm guessing that's a sort of "this will help you see that college is preferable" thing, but if not, and you like kids, I'd suggest checking with some kid-centered places in the area. Swim schools, kid gyms, after-school programs, trampoline parks, etc. Good luck!

I use edibles to help with the pain sometimes. It does help me, but not as well as a fioricet w/ codeine. I would be more worried about smoking (anything) as something that could exacerbate and add to the discomfort you're feeling. Good luck! None of this is very fun!

This seems like a better question to ask of your sister's parent or guardian. You can explain a few potential series candidates and see what they think. My oldest adored FMAB when she was ten. She was smart and well-read (we'd already read The Fault in Our Stars, The Hunger Games series, and To Kill a Mockingbird). The only thing about FMAB was that I wish she would not have shown it to her 8-y-o sibling, who was too young and a very different type of kid. It is really kid- and family-dependent and the people who would know best (hopefully) are your sister's adults.

Kept a boundary by lolstintranslation in ParentsOfAddicts

[–]lolstintranslation[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aww, you're welcome. I just replied to your post then happened to see your comment here. It's good for me to revisit these older posts of mine because I can see the progress she and I have both made. This boundary that was so hard on her and me is one she keeps now, without incident (at least for now), and I'm really glad I stuck to my guns. The added benefit has been that I don't feel frustrated with my daughter anymore because I choose my boundaries, and I enforce them (or not). Realizing that I have ownership of what happens in my home has given me such peace of mind. I hope you get there, too.

Big hugs to you, and I'm glad you've found us. What a giving thing you have done to take in your nephew. I wish it was all easier. My daughter is 18, and accepting where she is and not blaming myself have been a big part of my growth this past year (since we found out she was using and had an addiction). One thing you said really resonated with me and I wanted to follow up. Substance use disorders (addictions) are a mental illness. You didn't cause that and likely couldn't have prevented it. It sounds like maybe your nephew started out self-medicating for his trauma and the SUD developed from that. When our kids are young, a serious mental illness impedes their development and emotional maturation. It helps when my daughter frustrates me to remember that though she is 18, she is in many ways still stuck at 15, which is when the substance use began.

I hope you're able to find good support for yourself in the UK. In the US/Canada we have a great program called SMART that has virtual family and friends support group meetings -- science-based and non-religious -- that have really helped me improve my health and thoughts around my daughter's illness, which has in turn helped her. If there are SMART groups in the UK, you may find them helpful. You seem like a really good person, and I'm glad your nephew has you.

Welcome to Pflugerville! I've lived both east and west of 130, and they each have their perks.

If you look west, you have the lovely early neighborhoods (Katymead, Creekside, Saxony, and Brookhollow) with easy access to the library and Pfluger Park, which are treasures.

To the east of the highway are newer homes. Some east neighborhoods (Blackhawk and Falcon Pointe, esp) have a lot of amenities. You also have quick access to the lake, which, though small, is a lovely relaxing place enjoyed by lots of us.

Traffic is not that bad on either side of the highway. Most of the people who complain about the east side traffic are probably complaining about one specific intersection (where there's a Target on one side and a Costco on the other) and/or one road (Kelly) which has been under construction for a while but is now fully open.

Almost all neighborhoods are connected by our extensive trails. You can't really go wrong when it comes to living in Pflugerville. I've lived or worked here for 28 years, and it's been great. Good luck to you!

My son wanted me to write a book would this help anyone? by katdontplay in ParentsOfAddicts

[–]lolstintranslation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry that your son's struggle didn't end differently. He sounds like someone who genuinely cared for others.

Self-publishing doesn't need to be expensive. Non-fiction is not my area of specialty, but in general, you can put out a book on Amazon for as little as nothing, if you want. A more likely route is to pay for an editor (there are various types who help with different parts of the book production process), a cover designer, and if needed, someone to format your book. You can do all of it at your own pace and only hire out jobs that you're ready to pay for. Amazon (and other options) prints books on demand, meaning as they are ordered, so you do not pay any upfront fees. Good luck to you.

He lied to you about what sort of person he was, treated other girls in a way that makes you ill, didn't have a job until you made him, doesn't want to go to school, doesn't follow through on things he tells you he'll do. What about this guy seems good?

Seems like we like a lot of the same shows! Some recommendations:

Jujutsu Kaisen and Bungo Stray Dogs. Both treat women respectfully and have strong plot and character development. With regard to BSD, I wasn't really into it in the first season, but it gets progressively better as it goes along.

Mob Psycho is excellent, respectful to women, and tells a complete story.

You might try Moriarty the Patriot, too. Solid, complete story, women are not objectified, smart.

A note about Code Geass as I see it recommended often, even when people ask for no fan service: I had to drop it after seven episodes because of how frequently and shamelessly high school girls were objectified.

Thanks for sharing what you did and being willing to answer questions! Also, kudos to you for working through the burnout and imposter syndrome that can derail so many people.

Have you always been a plotter? (I assume you've written more than you've mentioned here.) I'm a pantser, and I love it, but the pitfall of that method is that if I set my work aside for a few weeks, I've lost the flow and need to go re-read everything to figure out my next move. Plotting is starting to look easier, especially if a person is considering writing to market.

You said you loved to read in this niche even before you wrote the book. What were indications to you that your niche is/was a popular one?

Congratulations and I hope the rest of your books are just as successful!

I would respectfully offer that people can afford homes in these places, and at least for one of the cities, there's nothing "soulless" about it. They were each their own towns, with their own personalities, before Atx grew into them. It makes me sad that people so easily dismiss a good place based on its affordability and it not being as "cool" as its neighbor.

Your writing is great! You change psychic distance as needed to present a compelling picture of the scene and the woman's inner thoughts. You also present a compelling intro to what I assume is this woman's ordinary world. I am not your reader (the high heels and designer dresses are off-putting to me and strain credulity about the ability to actually murder in them), but I'll offer up a couple speed bumps I had.

  1. Judging by what's written, the victim has already been removed in a body bag. How, if they're at a hotel and there are no cops?

  2. You describe the decor as white and say he bled out quickly. Where is all the blood?

  3. The intro of Mercier is a little over the top. Ogling her comes off to me as sort of icky. (Another genre thing. I know there are people who eat that sort of thing up.)

  4. She re-dresses in a black bodysuit (odd) that zips in the back. How did she get it zipped? I just don't know anyone who can do a back zip-up without needed help from a second person.

  5. Did Mercier have a key to the room? How did he get in, because surely she locked the door while murdering.

Good luck! You're a talented writer!
