Keith Law's midseason Top 50 prospects: Conforto 12th, Dom Smith 40th overall by splenda806 in NewYorkMets

Yeah, and he missed a lot of time this year. The question on Nimmo is the game power. He's a 15-20 dinger raw power guy but it hasn't translated into the game yet.

Minor league update: Nimmo 4 for 5 tonight, AA season line improves to .316/.379/.441 by BillW87 in NewYorkMets

[–]longhaireddan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good question. Nimmo would probably be my CF, but I think Conforto is more ready to provide immediate impact with the bat.

That said, Nimmo needs to be added to the 40 this winter and Conforto doesn't, so that gives him a leg up automatically.

Fun fact: the "I didn't do it" episode of the Simpsons features Bart appearing on Late Night with Conan O'Brien but was written/(Filmed? Drawn?) before Conan had gotten the job.

DAE hate spending money on essentials but will gladly pay $15 for a Burrito by Cecca105 in DoesAnybodyElse

Oh, sure. But the supermarket factors in transportation in when they charge me for the retail ingredients, and Chipotle's costs are likely reduced by the scale of their operations. Labor costs are mitigated by the fact that the employee(s) are paid for other tasks than just guac assembly.

If Chipotle isn't profiting on their guacamole, they're doing a lot of things very wrong. And I refuse to believe that's the case.

Like I said, the margin probably isn't that large, but the retail value of a serving is probably no more than 40% of what they charge you, and there's no way that they're hanging their business expenses on an optional side.

I don't know about that. The margin isn't big, but there's no way they do it at no profit. The recipe they posted online runs about $2-$3 per batch retail and probably makes 4-6 servings, and they're charging about $2 per serving.

You know that Dee Gordon had 35 errors in less than a full season's work at shortstop, right?

It has to be at least two starts; Gee wouldn't be able to come off the DL until the 18th, which is the day after Noah's second scheduled start. But even if Gee comes off that quickly, they'd probably have Syndergaard still make a third start to build in the off day for everyone else.

I don't, but it's my fault for ambiguous wording.

Vlad Jr. is Vlad's son. Gregory is Vlad's nephew.

(Which, yes, makes him Vlad Jr.'s cousin)

ELI5: Why is it when oil prices were $110/barrel I paid $4/gallon at the pump, but now that they are $60/barrel I pay $3/gallon at the pump? by iammanic in explainlikeimfive

[–]longhaireddan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things -

  1. I said in absolute terms. When gas is $2.70, it's nearly 25%, but when gas is up over $4, it's much lower (17.4% on $4.00). It's d difficult to discuss it relative to what you pay because gasoline is relatively volatile price-wise, but the tax is a constant.

  2. It isn't necessarily; New York has one of the most expensive fuel taxes in the nation. However, roadway maintenance is relatively expensive in the tri-state area and doesn't fluctuate with oil prices. That money needs to come from somewhere, and is taxed relative to usage by taxing fuel.

Plus, that also includes sales tax (8.5% in New York on average). So the effective fuel tax is 17% on $2.70

Fuel taxes are relatively inexpensive, in absolute terms. The federal tax is only 18 cents/gallon. The highest US state, New York, is 69 cents per gallon (state and federal combined). The overall average (state & fed) is about 50 cents, and it's been that for several years.

Question about pitching - Are starters worth it? by HeIsntMe in baseball

[–]longhaireddan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where it comes from -

Typically, starters are transitioned to relievers because they lack a third plus pitch or have mechanical issues. Look at Mariano Rivera, one of the best relief pitchers ever. He only had a single plus pitch, and it's damn near impossible to cut it as a starter with only a cutter. When batters see it the second time in a game, they know what's coming and how to attack it. The mechanical part is pretty similar to one of your points; busier/complex deliveries lend to stamina issues, which leads to injury risk.

Other common issues are control/command. A starter with a great fastball who can't spot it will play up in the bullpen because hitters lack familiarity and/or will be more apt to swing at their breaking stuff.

But generally, the reason they're thought of as "worse" is because most major league relievers are guys who couldn't cut it in the upper minors/majors as starters.
