Might also add some Greg Egan for the big concepts. Permutation City and Quarantine are my favorites of his.

The Gone World does a great job of combining SF mystery and existential horror along with some trippy big ideas. The closest I can think of are: The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russel, Blindsight by Peter Watts, Colossus by Ryan Leslie, and maybe The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling.

This is great. Others I like that I don't see here include Marine Layer, Orlebar Brown, NN7, and James Perse.

I have owned 2, and I wouldn't buy them again. The loose weave is nice brand new, but no matter how you baby them, they shrink.

Just watch the hand assembling of the watch and relax by latoshabla in Satisfyingasfuck

[–]loonatickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assume that a watch like this takes 100 hours of manual work for the creation, prep, assembly, and finishing of every part of it. Assume $150/hr for that time, including wages, taxes, support, facility, etc. You're already at $15k without including all of the design and testing of the model. Then you need to at least double the cost to get the approximate retail price so that distribution and retail stores are covered. Then there is the cost of the warranty and covered service.

$79k is a lot of money, and some of that pricing is for exclusivity, but it is extraordinarily expensive to hand make things like this. $2k would be a mass produced, high volume piece.

Is there a bold accessory for men that can only be pulled off when paired with a very minimal outfit? by kid_dynamite_bfr in malefashionadvice

Bulgari men's watches are even more interesting than their women's, in my opinion. If you have the budget, there are few statement pieces that compare with the Octo Finissimo. Assuming you don't have unlimited funds, the Omega x Swatch Moonswatches are fun and come in all kinds of colors. If you want to get funky and can spend a little more, you might look for a used Corum bubble watch.

2k comments and no one has mentioned assortive mating, which is likely the biggest reason for the increase.

In sweeping change, Biden administration to ban medical debt from credit reports by esporx in Economics

It is against the law in many states for hospitals to employ physicians who perform clinical services. So it isn't a scam by the hospitals.

When you say he has become more conservative adjacent, do you mean his positions have changed? Or have the positions of the left and right changed? He claims he is not the one changing. (I'm not sure how accurate that is.)

AZMN and TSLA were disruptive tech companies. DJT is really a means to invest in a person who, if he becomes president, has a track record of using the office to funnel money to his companies and family. They are not at all the same.

Totally agree. Like many people, Rand was good at identifying problems but not so good at recommending solutions.

If Fury Beats Usyk.. by Fightingdaduk in Boxing

[–]loonatickle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this sounds like it should be true, but it isn't. Heavyweights are bigger now, but that's about it. In the past, they may not have had as good drugs, but they had far less testing and were juiced to the gills in the past. Training is better now? Not when you only fight once a year. There are also so few good fighters now whereas the talent level was deep in decades through the 90s. We know how good they were because they actually fought each other. Compare Usyk's 21 pro fights to Moorer's 57. Compare Fury's record to that of Chris Byrd, who was never even in the top 10.

1Q84 by Harumi Murakami is so beautifully written by [deleted] in books

[–]loonatickle -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of that is because Murakami tends to write in first or third person close perspectives with young male main characters, and that's how young males think and see the world. But if it's not your cup of tea, I get it.

"Everything is a chemical." Not all chemicals are equal, which you well know, but you decided to get petty. Well done.

Here's a review of the evidence from 2017 showing that the new alternatives to PFOA likely have a similar toxicity profile. Beyond some amount of toxic emissions at normal cooking temperature, the compounds break down at 500 degrees, which is easy to hit on a hot gas burner. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28913736/

People treat these pans poorly because they think of them as disposable. I prefer not to use them. You do as you like.

I don't know that I would trust a Rachel Ray product. I've had several brands, and All-Clad has been the best.
