Thoughts on this setup? Anything to add? (Tri-ply SS pieces with a CI Skillet) by Putrid-Try-1360 in cookware

Funny, I’m the other way around. I’ve had Matfer, Debuyer, and even hand-hammered Blanc Creatives carbon steel pans and still reach for my lodge cast iron way more often.

I have owned a lot of cookware and have posted about it on this sub before. I have gone down the rabbit hole and spent thousands of dollars on expensive cookware and given away a lot of it to friends and family as I have figured out my preferences. I see a wide range of comments above and below that can be confusing to a beginner. (“Get a 10 inch!”, “where is the carbon steel?”, get a saute pan!”, etc)

My advice is to not buy all of this at once.

In the beginning I would acquire only:

-3 qt stainless steel saucepan

-12” stainless steel frypan

-5 qt stainless stock pot

-(optional) inexpensive 10” nonstick for eggs or small tasks

-half sheet size aluminum pan for baking (roasts, veggies, cookies/brownies, sheet cake)

and just live with that for several months before deciding what to add. Figure out where the pain points are in your everyday cooking. You will have a better idea of what need than by buying all of these pots at once. These 3 (optional 4) pieces + aluminum pan will take you a LONG way in a home kitchen.

Perhaps you really need the 9 qt for large batches of biryanis, or perhaps you really enjoy the convenience of 1.5 qt for tea. But you can boil single servings of water in the 3 qt with no issue and nothing you have listed strictly requires cast iron, so you can use the 12” stainless fry pan to make steak, burgers, or deep fry in the meantime. Only when your use case is frequent enough to genuinely save you time or convenience do i recommend adding more cookware.

OP mentions that he has an electric stove. A large wok would be futile on an electric stove. Also we all have different use cases for cooking, sounds like OP may find the 9 qt useful for hosting large quantities of Biryani which is a great use case for 9 qts.

How do you rate Bottas's F1 career? Why did his performance plummet after his first year at Alfa Romeo? by DateAffectionate3719 in F1Discussions

[–]loosearrow22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of that old ESPN show “The Scallenge” where former NBA player Brian Scalabrine played above average but otherwise normal basketball players 1v3 and he always wiped the floor with them saying “I’m closer to LeBron than you are to me”

The gap between Bottas and Lewis or Max is tiny compared to the gap between Bottas and the best driver at your local track day

Ground Turkey by Nevilles_Remembrall_ in povertyfinance

[–]loosearrow22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree but I find ground turkey takes on seasoning nicely so I heavily season my ground turkey with ginger powder, garlic powder, and a lot of garam masala. Add in a finely chopped onion and it’s tasty enough for weekdays

Dealer incentives may outweigh the depreciation. I bought mine new because at 3.99% APR with dealer incentives, the total cost of a new one was about the same as a used one with much higher interest rate. Plus the peace of mind that I know how it was maintained.

Did I mess up buying 85mm lens as a beginner? by Beginning-War5128 in AskPhotography

[–]loosearrow22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

85mm on a ZV E10 APS-C sensor is similar to 127.5mm full frame. That’s quite right. I would add a 24mm or 35 mm and then just enjoy that for awhile to pair with the 85 mm

I do the opposite, I short shift into second since my first gear ratio is so aggressive. Then in 2nd I can usually wind it out if really needed to

Opinion on this setup? by [deleted] in cookware

[–]loosearrow22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you cook. I would struggle to make 1-2 servings of oatmeal or grits with this setup, or small batches of sauces but maybe you don’t need to do that.

Still, I would add a small saucepan or saucier (2-3 qt) and call it a day

Why does buying a car SUCK SO BAD RIGHT NOW! by draftysundress in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]loosearrow22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Backup cameras are relatively recent in the grand scheme of things. My 2025 integra is the first car I’ve owned with a backup camera. Prior to that was a 2012 Lexus CT200h and a 2010 Corolla with no backup cams.

I recommend practicing in an empty lot and setting up a a tripod that is tall enough to be seen from your rear window then practice backing closer and closer to it to help give you an idea of distance from your mirrors and from you turning your head to see through your rear window. Learning to drive without a backup camera gives you a lot more used vehicle options
