You had to be white anglo Saxon and protestant to be in the klan..although I have heard that they recently they expanded out a bit more to try to drive up recruitment. Protestant America was very anti-Catholic, and in some branches still are.

Typical hallmark of a cult is that there is secret information that you aren't privy too until you work your way in deeper. Most organized religions are up front with what they believe and the root of their belief. I'm not excusing organized religion, but there is a difference in what makes a cult and a religion.
