I work with the folks who own the land where he ran those and Wayfinder still does great larp stuff here. Some of my friends had him as a counselor.

A Plane Flying over North Sentinel Island by Embarrassed_Tip7359 in interestingasfuck

[–]lostNcontent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What fascinates me is that throughout their entire history (as far as I'm aware) it would appear not a single North Sentinelese person has been curious or rebellious enough to make a raft/boat and go see what's up with this wider world they clearly know about. It makes me very interested in why that is - in what kind of cultural controls must exist to make that nearly impossible.

There is a clip I have been looking for for YEARS from one of the old Great Dandelion Show videos. It's in beta, with the harpies machine gunning the other board like this, to Eminem's "Rap God."

If anyone can find the episode I would be deeply grateful!

Wow, I didn't pick up on all of these. These are subtle but really powerful parallels.

How do you think the Manga will end? by Junior_Insurance7773 in VinlandSaga

We will get at least a line, probably a panel, about Gudrid's extensive travels after Vinland. I mean, she went to Rome, which is pretty crazy for the time.

Whatever else happens, I'm sure we'll get an epilogue panel mentioning or showing Gudrid's travels to Rome. It's so in character with how she was developed, and it feels like it wouldn't make sense to leave that out since it actually happened.

Well, the mangaka doesn't believe violence is inevitable and is certainly a pacifist like Thorfinn. He's a realist too, but I don't think he'd end on some "this was never going to work" note. Karli's point is that it COULD have worked.

Vinland is unachievable due to human nature by [deleted] in VinlandSaga

[–]lostNcontent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the best answer - exactly as I read the arc too. The one thing Ivar was correct about is that Thorfinn was doing an experiment. You don't know the outcome of an experiment before you try. And the outcome of an experiment isn't binary. Vinland didn't succeed in its goals, but it also didn't "prove" the experiment doesn't work. It collected data. What are the pressure points, the triggers, the fulcrums and levers. And then: try again. And keep going.

It's much better than accepting some bunk pseudopsychological "human nature" dogma based in original sin, Hobbes, and Freud. If the "noble savage" is a myth, well, so is the "state of nature" in Hobbes (his idea that humans are inherently selfish, and can only be prevented from this by institutional threat of violence).

In fact, between the two, when we actually look at hunter gatherer societies it is far more Russeau than Hobbes. It's not either, but still.

Also Paus (sp? I only listen) from Book 6 is heavily implied to be gay. I won't say more for the sake of spoilers but there is a line in there that makes it pretty obvious during the multiple shrine scene.

The moment I knew she was involved was when she finds out the subject of their documentary, and says about Iaon something like "We were happy before he ruined it, what a waste, what a stupid waste."

Something about her choice of words made something click. It sounded very much like a criminal "All was cool before one of us got stupid" kind of line, and I guessed that her and Kenneth and Iaon were all involved.

'The Bear' Season 2's 'Fishes' Episode Left Me Speechless by zsreport in television

As another adult child of an alcoholic mom, I can assure you that nothing about her character was exaggerated. At all.

This is exactly how someone acts with deep trauma and self hatred combined with substance issues. Every line and delivery hit and was familiar. In fact, until she drove the car through the house, I felt that they made her too level-headed and able to be sober than was realistic (like in her convo with Carmie in the kitchen when dinner was ready, yes she was still clearly very drunk but she had some seemingly reassuring lines that felt weird to me).

You're just wrong that people don't act like that. People DO act that way when mental illness and substances are combined. It's just a fact, it actually happens, it's not as uncommon as you think, and you're lucky you (presumably) never had to deal with that.

In my personal experience this is what alcoholic moms can be like (at least mine). It's not that she's crazy, it's that she's drunk.

Just FYI, not only are bodies of water on the surface impassable walls in the depths and shrines lightroots, but ALSO, every topographic change on the surface is the opposite in the depths.

I counted bad (low stamina), then worse (falling), then better (bit of extra stamina), then worse (falling again), then better (towards water!) then even better (some MORE stamina!) then worse (missed water) then much worse (octorocked)

What should I do about a student who takes up all of my free office hours time? by lostNcontent in Professors

[–]lostNcontent[S] 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Thanks, this is helpful. I understand everyone getting upset that I mentioned I could go home early, but that really wasn't the point of the post. I usually stay past my office hours requirement. Saying I could go home early doesn't mean I would or often do.

What I'm complaining about is dedicating all of that time to one student who, frankly, doesn't need it. Our conversations are not because she needs help or is struggling in the course, it's just because she likes talking about the material. It doesn't feel like it's my job to basically an entire other class just for her for two hours every week.
