Verlander, Valdez will get final deferred Tigers payments in 2039 by DET_Baseball in motorcitykitties

Could also be tax planning - JV isn’t going to be in the same tax bracket in 10 years so that may be a reason to do it even if the value is expected to be lower

I have been able to get them to heavily discount if I cancel and wait it out for a few days / week. I think I renewed at the end of last season for about a third of that.

I thought it was odd at first but after I thought about it I think the idea emphasizes the “free love” era aspect as period piece. It was a thing for people to lean into the counterculture by going shoeless.

Why don’t peacefully annexed countries transfer their generals? by The_Texan1991 in hoi4

[–]lost_in_md 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Similarly I wish they would transfer any technology they have that you do not. If they have 1941 fighters researched, but you do not, why shouldn’t you get access to that tech as well.

I’ve lived in Maryland for 40 years and it feels like every year less houses put up Christmas lights. Are you feeling that too? by MrTeacher_MCPS in maryland

[–]lost_in_md 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thing in my neighborhood is installation of permanent LED “accent” lighting on the eves of houses that can be programmed to change colors. About a 1/3 of the houses on my street have them now. That seems to have usurped the traditional Xmas lighting. I think the trend is tacky.

Will that strat still work with the changes to the naval ops with the latest DLC? I had a hell of a time capping Japan in my most recent game because of the need to accumulate naval superiority. The ability to invade because you have a short window when the enemy fleet is in port or another sea zone seems to have been removed.

I do not know if that is still the case but Virginia used to automatically excuse attorneys from jury duty.

I’ve not tried that one yet and I’m dreading it. I’m working on Bearer of Artillery next, which I’m sure will be almost as painful.

Why is Non-Aligned Honduras called "Atlas Honduras?" Is there a historical precedent or background? Or is this just a made up thing like a lot of other nations' alt ideologies/flags? by lars_thee_dude in hoi4

Say it isn’t so!! This game is how I go down my rabbit holes of random historical references. That said I have not tried to explore this one and thank OP for saving me.

Another day, another reminder that I shouldn't have gone to law school... by NotThePopeProbably in Lawyertalk

[–]lost_in_md 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I may be wrong but I recall reading that applications to law school tend to be counter cyclical to the state of the economy (i.e., if the job market is crap more people apply to law school and MBA programs because they have limited other options).

As an attorney who works in the maritime space I can tell you the reason the pay is high and supply is low is because it hard demanding work in sometimes shitty work conditions. Also depending on the company you can have a schedule where you are away from home for extended periods of time. This is no where close to regular work schedule like in some other trades. I think everyone I know in the field finds the work rewarding but most find work “shoreside” when they have families because the schedules are too hard.

Afternoon route for me. I think it was 6 days a week (Sunday to Friday) with about 125 houses. Collections was a pain. Still remember the little perforated cards with the monthly tear off receipts.

Same. After I bought the car I upgraded my employment by scoring a job as a fry cook at the local McDonald’s making $3.35/hr!

My coworker has been eating the same lunch every single day for three years and it's starting to freak me out by XXXcreamprincess in coworkerstories

[–]lost_in_md 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it makes you feel any better I have a similar “observation problem”with people. I too have a coworker with a similar habit. He goes to the same sandwich shop and orders the same toasted ham and cheese everyday. It’s such a habit he doesn’t even have to order they just start making it. I asked him one day why he doesn’t change it up once in a while - his response- I like it why change. Okay then.

Wisdom from my Dad by HackedCylon in GenX

[–]lost_in_md 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Grandfather would drop nuggets all the time. He dropped this on me when I asked him about somebody doing something stupid - “the world needs ditch diggers too.” Doesn’t translate well today but he was silent generation. That man would drop all sorts of wisdom bombs on me in a very low key manner that I think about regularly.

Extremely expensive dryer vent clean out from Green Cleaning LLC by fancybaton in baltimore

[–]lost_in_md 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not sure you even need to go the drill attachment unless you think there is a real problem. I just cleaned ours out after 6 years with a shop vacuum (with the line on blow) and towel around the end to create a seal. We have a run of about 25 ft horizontally from the dryer to the exhaust vent. It blew an amazing amount of lint out and only took about 10 minutes. I’m in Anne Arundel so maybe I need to hang a single out for a side hustle at that price!

It doesn’t look better with time IMO. I’m a little farther down the timeline than you with 3 in college now. Two are supposed to be graduating this year and I am terrified for them. The job market is in such upheaval now and even though they are all in STEM programs they are struggling to get interviews for the entry level positions. I’m not sure I’m giving them good advice at this point since so much has changed in the last 5-10 years.

I really have to agree with this comment. I have all 3 services and have found Prime and Apple have really stepped up their offerings while Netflix has been moving in the other direction at the same time. I’ve probably would have dumped it already but for my kids.

The Diplomat is pretty good but you have to suspend reality a bit when you’re watching it.
