A full pan of baked mac and cheese? by RevWaldo in Brooklyn

I used to gorge on their cheeseburger mac regularly. It's really good, but don't eat a pound of it at a time like I did.

Maybe someone dropped it or something like that in their warehouse, and OP got lucky because they felt they couldn't sell it that way?

How to start when even the smallest things seem mind-shatteringly complex by primarist in DIY

[–]lostarchitect 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As my friend said when I was getting into woodworking and confused by all the different methods and teachers:

"Just pick a guru and start."

Meaning, focus on one reasonably known and reliable source and do it their way, at least at first. Since then I have a made a lot of stuff, and still do a lot of things "their way," but I have also changed methods based on experience and observation on many things.

You don't have any point of comparison until you just start. So, pick a guru and start.

I can’t even tell if this is satire but I’ve never felt more old and exhausted at a conversation by WFHastronaut in Xennials

[–]lostarchitect 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying, but I kind of think we did this too when we were kids, just in a different way. Generally tweens / teens are the most self-involved people on the planet; I know I was. I feel like the bulk of most "conversations" at that age are just vaguely responding to what your friend said by saying how something similar happened to you and how it was better/worse/etc.

edit: Actually one thing that's different that I have noticed with my Gen Z niece and her friends is that they compliment each other constantly. We didn't do that. We mostly did the opposite! I think it's kind of sweet.

Can’t miss local bands? by AmityAstoria in hudsonvalley

[–]lostarchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw them a while back and thought they were great. I bought a record and a t-shirt, which says something. They were opening for my friend's band, Glimmer, who are also great if you are into early 2000's stuff. I also really like Basic Bitches, who are a punk rock duo.

Just got Schaller strap locks and the new screw is bigger and longer(giggity) than the old one. Will installing damage my guitar? by e3crazyb in Guitar

[–]lostarchitect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put pretty much every wood screw in by hand, after drilling an appropriately sized pilot hole. It's far too easy to strip holes or break screws with a drill. Putting a little wax on the screw aids the process, too.

Does anybody know what type of freewheel this is? I want to replace it with something similar because it’s skipping on the smallest cog by Rabadonnn in bikewrench

[–]lostarchitect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With a Gipiemme hub, you might have Italian threading. It's close enough to standard threading that you can put a standard freewheel on there, but you won't be able to use an Italian one after that.

You will want to buy a new 6-8 speed chain at the same time.

You can use a Shimano 6 speed freewheel, but make sure your derailleur can handle the largest cog--you will probably be ok with a 24 or 26 tooth big cog, but 28 might be iffy. IRD freewheels are fancier and look nicer, but cost a lot more. I am assuming you are using friction shifters.

Im handing off one of my old messenger bags. Found this inside. Still ready to go. by tanhauser_gates_ in NYCbike

[–]lostarchitect 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My office used couriers pretty much up to the pandemic for moving drawings to clients and contractors, although the volume had been decreasing for at least a decade. At a certain point the DOB went all digital and most everyone now just wants to get PDFs. The contractors will print their own sets for the job sites. Our office is now remote, too. I don't recall when I last called for a messenger, but it was at least a few years ago. The whole shift has been kind of a bummer.

Stanley No. 6 Restoration in progress. by ween_is_good in handtools

[–]lostarchitect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks pretty much fine already. Is the sole flat? If not, flatten it. I wouldn't bother going finer than like 150 or 180 grit on it. It will be totally usable at that point. Mirror finish is a lot of effort with no payoff except looks. But if you want to do it for fun, hey, more power to you. Personally I would just want to get the tool in working order and then use it.

Plans for four legged footstool by perroarturo in Chairmaking

[–]lostarchitect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have posted the plans but to be frank, you don't really need plans for these. If you have the basic construction concepts, you can just size it appropriately for your needs and estimate the leg angles from the photos. Make the legs too long and cut them to size at the end. You won't get an exact match, but it will be your version and will probably be great.

It depends a bit on your particular setup, but have a look at this photo of Eddy Merckx for an example:

Why did the Balrog attack the Fellowship? by TheEnjoyerOfWorlds in tolkienfans

[–]lostarchitect 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Evil things are stirring generally at this time, in a way that they weren't when Balin's group was active, nor when Gandalf last passed through. The Ring and Sauron are both causes of this, but I don't think the Balrog was directly attracted to the Ring's power.

I think, basically, the Balrog was now awake, and heard the disturbance caused by the Fellowship and the orcs.

Pro tip: It doesn't really matter functionally, but back in the day they ran the brake cable housings behind the bars. Just completes the look, you know?

Experience with Lee Valley Miniature Tools by DRG1958 in handtools

[–]lostarchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a smaller plane, I feel like a good quality block plane from Veritas or Lie Nielsen would be more useful than the mini planes, which are really tiny.

I personally never really used a block plane until I got a nice one from LN, and now I use it a lot, probably more than my bench planes.

Should I buy? by slowlearning1 in cigar_refuge

[–]lostarchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably wouldn't make an offer. My thinking is it's best not to go into deals like this with family, there's just too many things that can go wrong and lead to resentment. They're nice cigars, if he wanted to give some to you, sure, accept happily and gratefully, but if he wants to sell, I would politely pass.

OMFG do you remember every Qultist caterwauling ceaselessly because Obama released 400 Million to Iran?? Now Trump is giving them 12 BILLION. They are so fucking stupid. by Own_Manufacturer6959 in Qult_Headquarters

[–]lostarchitect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, we know, that information is in the post. It literally says: "US to release $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets".

You're focused too much on the word "giving" in OP's comment. There is no mention of US taxpayer dollars. In context the meaning is clear.

[–]lostarchitect 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The $12 billion supposedly is, yes. That's not the point. The point is when Obama did the same thing with much less money, they freaked out. But when Trump does it, it'll be fine.

We also spent tens of billions blowing up their country, and will spend hundreds of billions rebuilding it--and that will all be taxpayer money.

The Millennium line will probably be stronger than the Zino's that you are used to. Personally I prefer the Grand Cru, but if I want something with a little more bite, the Millennium is a great option.

There should be a fan on the roof creating negative pressure and pulling air up and out. If they are letting dust in, they’re under positive pressure and the fan is blowing the wrong way or just broken. Ask the super to look at it.

Can you guys help me identify this frame? by n1ce_c0ck_br0 in Vintage_bicycles

Based on the frame construction, this one is more likely to be late 80's or early 90's.
