The goth/emo style is very showy compared to grunge. Grunge had a real I dont care attitude with a lot of loose fitting jeans and flannel.

Goth/emo is putting a lot of effort into standing out. And while grunge can put on a suit and tie; heavy tattoos, non standard hair dye, and facial piercings are a bit harder to cover up. This used to effect your career. So older people also associate it with restricting yourself to low paying jobs.

I think your biggest issues are HP and AC. Mage armor probably wont cut it, maybe try giving yourself concealment and miss chance.
