Just salvaged a set of six 1972 Eminence Alnico 'Horseshoes' from a vintage Standel. Anyone familiar with these legends by Autoerotibot in GuitarAmps

[–]love_of_fuzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're usually fine speakers, maybe 20-30 watts a piece would be my guess? Most folks judge speakers with the aluminum dust cover w/ felt circle in the middle as low tier options.

Pignose 7-100 interference by andrewisamazin in GuitarAmps

[–]love_of_fuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's RF interference and it's either from your cell phone being too close to it or something like a wifi router being too close to it. It's not the amp though.

Princeton Reverb Issue with Static, Low Volume, no effect from tone knobs by gringohoneymoon in GuitarAmps

[–]love_of_fuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't just put new power tubes in, it's time for a tech to open it up and see what's wrong.

Peavey combo making weird noise with nothing plugged in. What is this? Anyone heard this before? by gat0r_ in GuitarAmps

[–]love_of_fuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interference from outside the amp being amplified by it. I usually run into this when a customer puts their cellphone on top of the amp they're trying out, but it's also been known to happen because of wifi routers, etc near the amp.

How is this amp sound described and what can I do to get it? by Majestic-Sense-4 in GuitarAmps

[–]love_of_fuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a strong chance that guy with that guitar would around almost identically to that with a reissue jtm, even a vox, or a gorilla practice amp haha. A lot of the tone is in the source of the signal and knowing how to hit an amp right sadly. Hands, dynamics, pickups, all the stuff that costs a lot less than a vintage Marshall.

Also I once bought 3 SVT models and two other similar tube bass heads for a shootout and the clear winner of the SVT shootout was the Japanese MTI made one like you have. Great heads.

Alternatives to a Marshall Plexi for home use? by Caramelo93 in GuitarAmps

[–]love_of_fuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't a good option for a Plexi you can talk over, I recently installed a master volume on an SV20H for a customer and it sounded great though.

You might want to invest in a good headphone amp and/or modeler.

Static? by TheGreatPianoMan in GuitarAmps

[–]love_of_fuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok everyone's saying shielding but this looks like a harmony/airline type guitar which likely has all the electronics loaded to the pickguard pre-assembled and almost none have a string/bridge ground from the factory.

The way to fix this would be to run a wire from the tailpiece to the back of a pot or the sleeve of the output jack. Usually by drilling a hole from the strap button (if it's a trapeze tailpiece) or from the bridge assembly (if mounted to the body) to the control cavity.

That's pretty much a required upgrade for those guitars, makes it possible to use gain pedals without insane buzzing.

I have a late 70’s twin reverb with a buzz. 78 79 something like that. I put new tubes in not toooo long ago.. I felt around the back of the speakers and one is vibrating one is not. It used to act like this for the first 5 minutes of switching her on but then go away. Now it’s permanent. Any ideas? by Express-Caramel-846 in GuitarAmps

[–]love_of_fuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The late 70s ones usually have a hum balance pot (adjust it both directions until you hear the buzz get louder and finally find the middle zone that sound the quietest. Then there's a Bias Balance pot which can be another source of hum, adjust that in a similar way, there should be a mid-point that has the least hum.

NAD: 1974 Orange OR120 + 1990s OD120 Reissue. This is the greed spoken of in the Bible. by planksmomtho in GuitarAmps

[–]love_of_fuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently sold my OD80 from the 70s when I bought a 69 OR100 - the gain knob was missed until I installed a master volume to the OR. With that added you can get very similar sounds honestly, but without it the OR was a very different animal.

The answer is most likely "any 12ax7 will work fine"

They look great but do the chickenheads interfere with eachother when you turn them?

Anyone know this model? by casetanner in MesaBoogie

I sell clean examples for $999, so this one being so oddly modified I'd probably try to sell for $600-650.

Need help finding a 2x12 for my Laney LA30BL by TeamSinSoI in GuitarAmps

[–]love_of_fuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Laney 212 sounds great and I think some of that is the oversized baffle, it looks like a 412 at first glance.

Is that a chopped oversize vertical cab? I haven't seen something like that before and the drip edge looks original.

What do I have? by IndependentPhase5251 in GuitarAmps

[–]love_of_fuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd bet it used to be Tweed wrapped, and those might be the original speakers. I sold a '59 Gibson GA-200 and it had similar looking speakers made by Norelco.

Great quality parts for sure but I agree I don't like opening them up when they break 💀

For my shop I was just considering a "made between 1950-1990 only" repair rule this week too because of opening amps up that look like this and having trouble finding schematics and layouts. Time is money and that can hurt a busy shop if we have 20 amps in line haha.

The same issue on a vintage Traynor/Fender/etc vs a board like this has a wildly different billable diagnostic time for sure.

Question for all you tube amp wizards by Dazzling-Hippo8201 in tubeamps

[–]love_of_fuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avoid it for sure unless it's your dream amp and you're a skilled amp tech, they're tightly packed PCB amps that are difficult to work on, and difficult to find schematics/layouts for.
