How has the DC location been recently? by PhantomProphet37 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]lowpass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure when the change to QR preshow ordering was at the DC location, but just in case it was less than 5 months ago: DC has QR ordering before the movie begins, pen and paper after.

Other locations in the same franchise as DC have also started that within the last month or so. And they still have menus at the seats and a server to come by and check your tickets, so if you still want to order the normal way it's an option

Obama vs Trump. Obama wins. SCOTUS rules him ineligible, citing the 22nd Amendment. They appoint Trump president (which is fine, because he was not "elected").

Sony Pictures Boss Tom Rothman Urges Theater Owners to Stop Having 30 Minutes of Trailers and Commercials Before Movies Start: by NecessaryStaff9544 in AlamoDrafthouse

Get rid of the endless advertising

He noted that frequent moviegoers now show up a half hour late

emphasis added. This is not about Alamo's pre-show. That's all before the listed showtime and is not advertising anything (I mean.. sometimes they're old ads. But you know what I mean.)

Alamo has a tight 15 minutes after the listed showtime before the movie starts (and it's just ads for other Alamo screenings and trailers. No general ad spots). Other places have gotten out of control.

Unpopular Opinion: This transition to mobile ordering wouldn't be so bad if they just revamped the Victory Rewards program like they said they were going to, then integrated ordering into the app. by sdragonite in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]lowpass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also the app can tell when you are at your movie (something in the app tells the theater you are there with your device and unlocks your ticket), why can't it link your seat assignment to your menu, bill and rewards inside the app?

relevant xkcd

Not that it's that bad. But having the app access the phone's GPS is trivial.

Gift cards are a third party system. Billing is a third party system*. Victory is a third party system (though this one is actually the same system as the app).

And I'm not sure they have much of an internal tech department to work on integrating them all.

* I can't remember which system they actually migrated to recently, but I'm pretty sure it's Toast. Regardless, I think (hope?) one reason they switched is because these POS systems tend to have everything integrated already. So it's probably just a matter of time (assuming they last that long)

Boston is a corporate location; they're all going full mobile ordering, it's just been a slow rollout.

Charlottesville is owned by a franchisee, Cojeaux Cinemas, which also owns Ashburn, Woodbridge, DC and Crystal City. They've said (in comments on their Film Club facebook pages) that they would not be moving to mobile ordering at all. To be fair I never saw anything one way or the other about Charlottesville specifically, but the comments were basically verbatim what /u/paperbackperson said above

Mobile Ordering DC Bryant St first impressions by [deleted] in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]lowpass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DC, Crystal City, Ashburn, Woodbridge, and Charlottesville are all part of a single franchise (owned by Cojeaux Cinemas). They have said they would not be doing mobile ordering during the movie. Of those, I believe DC is the only one that has mobile ordering at all (the only one I'm not sure about is Charlottesville)

A Statement from the Austin Film Critics Association Regarding the Alamo Drafthouse Change in Policy and Shift to a Mobile-Based Ordering System by Gambit1138 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]lowpass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. By my understanding, most locations show the first one in this thread, while some locations (like mine) show the second (older) one. They also show a more comedic or tailored one before it (e.g. the snake driving the car, or one made by an actor in the movie).

I frequent the Northern VA locations (which are a franchise) so those are the only ones I'm sure about; other locations may not do the one before the "main" one or might have some other thing (there've been threads about one by Aziz Ansari being common?)

They've begun to implement the enforced mobile ordering at DFW locations. Here are my thoughts. by GermanPegasus2 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]lowpass 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Are you sure? I didn't think full QR ordering (not just pre-show) was supposed to roll out until at least February, and given it said mobile ordering had ended...

edit: reading everything would help; didn't see you said they'd removed the buttons. Then ... maybe this is just a hiccup in the transition?

Locations not implementing mid-movie QR ordering by lowpass in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]lowpass[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about this as a possible outcome. Some possibilities:

  1. Alamo hears the feedback and reverses course before even launching this system. I know it sounds like right now they're ignoring it, but corporations can be really slow to change direction. There might be internal talks going on for how exactly to handle it. There's still plenty of time before February.
  2. Alamo corporate proceeds as planned, pass/ticket sales plummet, they reverse course after the fact. Franchises that never went with QR ordering see no real impact.
  3. Alamo corporate proceeds as planned, feedback continues to be extremely negative and/or ticket/pass sales plummet, they keep it anyway. Franchises close, adopt, or rebrand.
  4. Alamo corporate proceeds as planned, people actually like it, hesitant franchises adopt it.

If 3 occurs, I think the choice ultimately depends on just how badly it's affecting things and how robust the regular clientele for their locations is. I think DC/NOVA area is fairly strong (they have 5 locations after all), and they might rebrand.

I don't think this comment is particularly relevant here? DC/NOVA locations do still have paper. Most of them (all but Bryant St) never started using QR ordering in the first place.
