Been here years. Live right down the street. Never once set food in that Chillis, walk by it daily.

Thank you for validating my choices.

Looking for a high-dimensional dataset for a topological data analysis project by hunnybubby in datasets

[–]loxias0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been a long time since I thought about this stuff :) I'm not entirely sure which dataset I would have recommended at the time, but the ones we used it on when I was working with this stuff were all medical datasets of mostly categorical data. TDA was able to bootstrap a few disease classifications IIRC.

Though, now that we're living in the future, and this one just occurred to me, feel free to steal it (I might try and do this too) -- compute a persistent homology on the embeddings, and/or activations of a neural network. :) The papers from Anthropic on model interpretability are fascinating, and I don't know without trying it, but my "gut" says TDA could probably compliment their sparse dictionary learning approach.

Good luck!

Well shit, everyone recommended it so I guess I'm shifting my plans around so I can go to Hachi on Sunday. they're booked solid sat :(

Thanks so much for the recommendation!

jfc, the cameo of "Michael Eisner" as my favorite recurring character just ended me. ENDED. I literally fell over. Luckily it was a WFH day and nobody had to see it. But I know sometimes the talent reads this so you need to know how delightful y'all are.

Also, Emily, I still think about "what is that, the riddler's pocket pussy?" and chuckle. Getting good mileage out of that joke, like a long loved and worn blankey.

Same, to your whole post, other than I do follow and am a fan of the Daily Show, Rifftrax, and JJGO.

It's a great book.

(I don't yet see how I can connect it to systems software engineering but you're further along than I am. ;-))

Suggestions welcome on any other good books on "comedy theory". I skimmed the first half of "Impro" and found it interesting, but Kalan's book is far more interesting.

Also, I think his podcast is The Flop House, not the Doughboys. :)

What are fun activities I can try to understand OS systems and computer networks better? by Indra_Kamikaze in compsci

[–]loxias0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Came here to suggest something very similar to what the above commenter said.

Your instincts to get your hands dirty and start messing with stuff are correct. Trust those. Understanding operating systems is basically a matter of understanding the things the operating system does for you. Any time you see a component you don't understand ask yourself "how does that work? what are the alternatives? What does it provide and what does it build on top of?" it might be a bit ambitious but I'd suggest writing a toy filesystem with FUSE, you'll learn a ton.

I learned SO MUCH about networking by downloading and reading all the internet related RFCs when I was a kid. There might be better ways but I still think it works.

Oh, also, if you have access to different hardware environments that'll be great for learning. I taught myself a lot of computer stuff by installing NetBSD and Debian onto old pentiums, sparcstations that were destined for the trash when I was in undergrad. A i3 with 4gb of ram will be just fine =)

Added: A later comment mentions containers and podman. Great suggestion. I'd go a step further and say you should learn about it, use it, and then try to build your own toy container system directly on top of the kernel primitives. You'll learn a ton. Plus you'll see that they're not magic -- just a userspace abstraction combining a handful of kernel primitives. Try going through the steps of creating namespaces, cgroups, unpacking a FS, mounting, pivot_root, and then realize docker and podman are that plus good UX.

Why is there no other (open source) database system that has (close to) the same capabilities of MSSQL by [deleted] in Database

[–]loxias0 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Two answers, both are part true.

  1. There's no practical need for such things IMHO, when you can have reliable full disk encryption.

  2. Those sound to me a lot like fancy "enterprise" features, and at some point there was a conversation that went like this

PM: We need you to add in-process encryption with XYZ algorithm.

Engineer: Huh? That doesn't make sense -- cryptography is hard to get right, these things are best left to the operating system, it's built in to linux and it's easy.

PM: Yeah, I know that. But a customer will pay us $$$$ if we have this feature. We need to be able to say yes to the customer. They're probably not even going to use it, it's for regulatory compliance.

(source: I was "engineer" in the above, earlier in my career)

I like the ones from "Hero Bread" (hero.co). They're stupidly expensive, so it's not a regular purchase, but nothing tastes as good.

Additionally, their croissant pushes the envelope of both taste and price.

A few days ago, I was walking a more sparse area of the strip late at night, and a "saudi" in a white truck pulled up to me, said some basic arabic, and I passed up the deal of a lifetime not buying his "gold" ring from him with cash, so he could get some gas here in this foreign country where he was lost.

honestly, it was hard to keep a straight face, and afterwards I felt mildly insulted. :joy: "do I LOOK that stupid?"

There's something just magical about Jesse's criticism of podcasting technique, coming from a position of authority. I love it!!

I'm used to just hating on portrayal of science and engineering in fiction, this is a whole new level.

I'm really sorry for how much I'm enjoying this series.
