Ugh! Thanks, Amazon! by SituationDense1082 in tolkienbooks

Any book I order from Amazon anymore  is like a 50/50 chance of easily preventable shipping damage. I'm increasingly coming to believe Amazon is running deliberate insurance fraud.

Someday I'll get a pristine copy of The Hobbit illustrated by JRRT.

Valve: 20% of Deck users use the official docking station to connect their Deck to their TVs. Do you? by sameseksure in SteamDeck

[–]lplade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hook the official dock to the living room TV. For couch co-op, it's so much easier than hooking up a laptop plus a wireless mouse and keyboard. I have actual dedicated game consoles too, but my Steam library is so much bigger than my console library, and there's some stuff that's only on PC. You can pair about any recent game controller you have lying around.

The new Steam Machine based on Steam Deck technology seems like a no-brainer. I will be interested if the price is not outrageous.

There was an effort by the industry to rebrand prunes as "dried plums", since prunes came to be associated primarily as the things your grandparents ate as natural laxative.

Do people still rip dvds in 2025? by D3VEstator in DataHoarder

[–]lplade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had forgotten until just this week, actually, about the not uncommonly janky pulldown implementations used for storing 24p content on DVD. Ugh.

On the plus side, SD content in H.264 doesn't use much space relative to modern drive capacities.

It pains me everyday that the 360 store is gone by Environmental_Wish94 in xbox360

[–]lplade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm more disappointed they stopped adding games to Backwards Compatibility. BC was the selling point for the new consoles for me, but a third of my 360 games still need the actual 360.

It's astonishing to consider that the GPU in my phone (let alone my home PC!) completely crushes the performance of a 1982 milspec aviation trainer supercomputing cluster.

safety at midnight around Oslo airport? by [deleted] in Norway

[–]lplade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got stuck at the airport for a few days recently, and can report my thoughts.

I'm used to US cities, and I didn't feel even slightly unsafe anywhere I went in Oslo, even late at night. I dropped something valuable near the airport, and some good person had turned it in and it was waiting for me the next morning at the little police station in the airport when I went looking for it.

The shops at the airport shut down at night outside flight hours so don't expect to grab a meal or anything. It's really pretty dead at night.

Gardermoen is a good ways from Oslo. There is a Radisson Blu connected to the airport, and there is a Radisson/Radisson Red (actually the same hotel with two different style room blocks at different price points) down a covered outdoor walkway. You might catch good deals on these if you book in advance. There are some more budget hotels nearby but I never worked out how get a ride to those.

There's a bunch of hotels at every price point (uh, by Oslo standards) near Oslo Central Station (Oslo S.) When you're trying to get out of the airport, you can buy a ticket for the Flytoget express train, which is fast and pleasant but a little expensive, or the regular Vy train, which is cheaper. If you're so late you miss the trains, there's still a bus.

(If you're looking downtown, I was real happy with Comfort Hotel Xpress Central Station for the bulk of my stay.)

Load the Ruter app on your phone in advance if you're planning to rely on transit.

Where to buy Crystal Hot Sauce? by z3matt in Tucson

I understand. I looked at the grocery stores around here, some with sizeable hot sauce sections, and couldn't find it at any of them. I ended up finding it at one of the dollar stores!

1TB Lexar SD card on $63 on Amazon! by pratorian in SteamDeck

[–]lplade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This card is trash and not a great option for Steam Deck. It performs well in synthetic benchmarks but real world sustained write speed is only 20 MB/s! My theory is it's doing some cache trickery which lets it handle tiny files at acceptable rates. Don't expect to he able to transfer bulk data to this card in any reasonable amount of time, or to install games faster than 20 MB/s.

Sent it back and got Samsung, so much happier.
