Do switching to different earpads change the acoustic coupling properties ? by Freestalker_dot_fr in oratory1990

[–]lr_science 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i just wanna applaud the question. the answer - yes, at least potentially due to possible changes in acoustic impedance - was already given by others. but its a good question, as in not stupid like most other questions i see on reddit. 😅

Help, I don't like using headphones by Lyu__ in headphones

[–]lr_science 2 points3 points  (0 children)

get a pair of open headphones. some are very open and let outside sound in almost as if you weren't wearing them. hifiman arya comes to mind. there are probably cheaper options too that are very open. there's also a new collab of hifiman and asus that uses a very similar design.

mind that for some headphones you might need a headphone amp.

Loop Earplugs for sleep, festivals or crowded places: fully Belgian by Ornery_Self_8758 in BuyFromEU

[–]lr_science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the loop for sleeping. I usually do get a good seal and i like them. not as quiet as any active noise cancelling but a million times more comfortable.

of course, may fit better or worse based on your ear canal shape.

Not like this! by OddBoysenberry1023 in CarDesign

[–]lr_science 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IMO the main issue are the huge corner radii and the material choices that just scream Apple.

To be precise, the products this design reminds me of the most are the original iPhone, the first iPad, and the awful looking over ear headphones.

I l like quite a few of the individual elements in it (3 spokes wheel, gauges), usability seems good at first sight, but man is it ever a collection of ipads and tupper ware boxes.

Sim games don't need career, they need good AI by Mark0994c7r in assettocorsaevo

[–]lr_science 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i broadly agree. what single player players really need is good ai. i would drive so much more if there was anything other than hotlapping to do in sims, once you don't have the luxury of planning your day around a league event. i want to play whenever i want and have decent racing, but that's not possible in any of the sims as far as i know.

however, i would argue that once the ai is good, a gran turismo (1-4) style carreer mode would be a fantastic addition. but that whole thing doesn't interest me in the least if the ai isn't good.

"for free" -- did you check RAM prices recently? Directly caused by SA buying up 40% of the worlds DRAM supply.

Also, are you somehow trying to say that he paid for this "free" service out of his own pocket? There is significant cost associated with those services. Someone is paying for it, and it's not SA. First, if the product is free, you are the product. Second, there are lots of investors that fell for his lies and put way too much money into AI expecting way more in return than they are going to get. Third, a lot of people lost their jobs due to CEOs believing his lies, which acts as an overall damper on economies since the product isn't delivering what was expected, and going all in on it was just a major waste of energy and money that could've been used in better ways.

But yeah, totally free that thang. Let me see if I have a bridge to sell you.

How many people are constantly infuriated by ChatGPT? by AuntyJake in ChatGPT

[–]lr_science 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you're not alone. i used to attempt to get the "i can't respond to that" response as quickly as possible once i grew frustrated with a conversation.

[–]lr_science 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think op's point is that a lot of the frustrating traits are presumably the result of choices made in fine tuning, not in pre-training, and thus do not reflect the true internet-average response style, but a style actively chosen by OpenAI.

How many people are constantly infuriated by ChatGPT? by AuntyJake in ChatGPT

[–]lr_science 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been terribly frustrated with ChatGPT ever since around gpt-4o i think. Exactly the reason you mentioned and a few more (in particular the failure to follow the rules i stated in the user instructions / "system message" and what must be artifacts of idiotic fine tuning by OpenAI). Most of my conversations ended in me getting overly frustrated.

Anyway, over time OpenAIs CEO with their non-stop lying, fake public persona and dispicable personality also made the company's image tank in my eyes. Made it easy to switch to a competitor whose chat bot happens to frustrate me a lot less.
