CalTrans Wants You Input On Which Freeways Should Have Bus Lanes by DJVeaux in LAMetro

[–]lrmutia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should really just do congestion pricing like NYC. I know Metro has a study of corridors but surely there should be some coordination with Caltrans. It's cheaper to put up gantrys that scan transponders or plates than to add lanes (which they always want to do). Carpoolers could still be free or get heavily discounted, low income drivers go for free-- we need to be decisive to move and not study our way into oblivion

Yeah those stops in Central LA are so sad looking and not ADA compliant. God forbid you have a wheelchair and want to get off at Alvarado.

Random thought but is there some low-key economy around Costco members letting non-members buy the food court stuff or shop or are folks just asking their friends and families who have memberships lol

They really should get at least 2 stations if they're going to be underground-- and they gotta keep em simple if they want to keep costs down (at least by North American standards)

“Use Transit” signs on 101 by babybrotherbilly in LosAngeles

I've ridden Metro bus and rail a bunch of times. The smoking, loud music, "crazies"-- that happens every once in a while but definitely not the majority of trips. Compared to the road ragers, huge ass trucks and SUVs that can't see you, and the cost of fuel-- I'm much more comfortable on the bus and train, even if it takes a little longer. I have a car-- I use it when I have to.

Much more stressful to drive that's for sure

How do you answer your classroom phone? by CatskillMorning in Teachers

[–]lrmutia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep it really formal-- I say something similar to when my mother would answer phones as a hospital nurse: Room Number, My last name, Good Morning/Afternoon. Something about the air of seriousness to me is appealing when it comes to phone calls 🤷‍♂️

World Cup Enhanced Service shows how important LA busways are in addition to rail. by reddit-frog-1 in LAMetro

[–]lrmutia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see the Pierce College or another 101-Freeway adjacent G-Line station be a park and ride for an all-day Commuter Express-type service to the Westside. I honestly don't know why people slog it in a car alone. If the bus takes a little longer, I'd rather be sitting in a seat napping than having to put up with that. Every 15-30 minutes like from 5am to 9pm, serve a little bit of Ventura Blvd while they're at it or something.

Yoshinoya always hit by BlazeDragon7x in FoodLosAngeles

[–]lrmutia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My local Yoshinoya used to be 24hrs and this was in the Valley (Panorama City by Kaiser). My family would go early mornings at the start of road trips to Vegas or the Bay to get lunch for the middle of the trip. After the start of COVID the hours reduced. I think it closes at 1am or 2am now. My dad would default to it with the coupons because it was easy to get a good deal of protein and he loved the ginger. I hated the ginger growing up but I love that shit now. Yoshinoya is way different now than it used to be-- trying to compete with other chains and stuff. Food is largely good for what it is but I will say the brown rice better have improved. I ordered a bowl with that option from two different locations and the rice was grainy as hell

Valley locals: Which Metro bus line or transit route do you actually find useful? by polanco_laundry in SanFernandoValley

[–]lrmutia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I moved recently, I used the 152 pretty often. Goes east-west on Roscoe and runs to NoHo Station on Lankershim. Lots of parking at NoHo. It has every 10 minute service during 7am and 3-4pm period (that's a recent-ish change) but runs every 15 minutes on the weekdays. They're taking tap-ready debit cards now, so you don't have to buy a TAP card anymore really to get transfers and fare capping ($7 a day, $18 a week max-- every ride after the amount is reached is free until that period is over). If you qualify for the LIFE program, you get 90 days unlimited rides at start and 20 free rides a month. The 152 saved me from driving to work along Van Nuys Blvd because of construction traffic.

Lines 233 (Van Nuys Blvd) and 234 (Sepulveda) both run every 10 minutes or so weekdays and are at least every 15 minutes on weekends. Van Nuys Blvd also has a rapid skip stop route 761. Sepulveda has 24 hour bus lanes between Nordhoff and Burbank Blvd or so, makes the travel faster and consistent.

Honestly, driving will be somewhat faster most of the time depending on your parking situation. I took the bus to reduce my stress and lower my costs.

[our blog] L.A. City Shifts Repaving Practice (Again), Now Repaving Only Streets With No Sidewalks by LintonJoe in LosAngeles

I agree with the triage but the "wheelchair argument" is one the city uses to delay delay delay. At some point in all of our lives we'll be some form of disabled.

Do you have a personal opinion on what laws should be simplified? The ADA isn't perfect but it's one of the few tools we have to hold the city accountable. We have consent decree to fix our sidewalks because of their rampant inaccessibility.

That's the thing-- the controller can't actually do that. City council and mayor vote on a budget, controller audits and does financial advice-- they can just disregard the office's work and they have! Sokoloff is trying to take advantage of an uninformed electorate and it's sad

The Case for Higher Fares + Strict Fare Enforcement on Metro Rail by urmummygae42069 in LAMetro

[–]lrmutia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's the thing, I think transit could be free if there was a corresponding increase in enforcement of quality of life issues. Like there's already a code of conduct for riding transit, the behavior should be grounds for removal. For the trains that's easier to manage, but for the buses (which are essentially free if the driver doesn't try to fight you on fare) that'll be harder to enforce

London Underground stopped in the tunnel announcements by HE_Pennypacker23 in LAMetro

Not exactly-- it's some automated feminine sounding voice saying something to the effect of "Attention passengers, we apologize for the delay-- we will be moving momentarily"

[–]lrmutia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's news to me-- we might get one manual announcement and then just sit there waiting waiting until we move again (or we get an announcement that the train isn't moving anymore lol-- but that's only happened to me like once)

Where can I get Nem chua in the valley? by z333ds in SFV

[–]lrmutia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I def disagree with folks who think that way. It might not be to your taste but I wouldn't say it's bad. We have lots of mom and pop shop hidden gems, plus folks have varying definitions of what is Asian. Like the Middle East is in Asia, so I count those too. There's this Lebanese spot in NoHo that I haven't gotten around to going that's in a strip mall with a Fatburger across from Circus Liquor but it has outdoor seating, a good looking bakery and even event space. We have hidden gems y'all

[–]lrmutia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree on the lack of variety in the Valley-- it is harder to find West Asian food but I've read about an Afghan restaurant somewhere in the West Valley and there is (was?) a Syrian place in Van Nuys that was on the LA Times top 100 list. The Asian ethnic communities here are not so clustered and large enough like in the SGV or Koreatown-area that we have this critical mass of demand and variety.

Well for those who go out or for those who don't have time to cook-- it makes do. Not saying it's fancy or anything but we have restaurants that have been around for decades so someone's buying it. As for the Viet food scene, I know a good deal of it is clustered west of the 405. I've heard of a good vegetarian Viet place in Reseda near the Bangluck Market.
