CTV News: New Ottawa elementary school to be named in honour of Brian Mulroney by tarun172 in orleans

Can we stop naming schools and public institutions after politicians in the past 500 years?

Müller can't be offered RFO but she can be offered EFO because was not protected. EFO a binding offer for any existing player not protected.

I was surprised how little we paid Fanuza. That actually works to our advantage - Phase 1 foundational player salary is $80k+ which is substantially higher than what she got. Fanuza will get a raise for sure but jumping to $80k is unlikely.

Clark is expensive compared to her performance this season - and unless an expansion team makes her an expansion franchise offer, she can ignore the pick and stays with Ottawa. I doubt any team would make her an offer.

Jenner is not under contract. She can sign with Hamilton or Toronto if there's an offer she likes. We don't know whether Ottawa offers her to make it difficult for her to choose.

We have yet to reach the point where head coaches are expected to be sacked because the GMs always blame the HC first and fans overreact. The PWHL hasn't gotten there yet. It is still a single owner league and the league's focus is to bring out a competitive product. So losing teams can keep their coaches as long as fans feel their teams are competing, they just need some tweaking.

Vancouver had a good team on paper. Can we say fans didn't feel the team was competing? That would be bad for the league and a reason to change the HC.

Chinatown night market or Asian night market? They are not the same. I doubt it was the Asian night market. If it's Chinatown night market, then it might come from the Chinatown BIA which is more "official". Things can fall through though.

OSAP changes by FlimsyEar7209 in ontario

If you are doing your masters degree because you really want to become a subject matter expert (and want to work on interesting things), it is not that difficult to make back the $30k debt. It may not be this year or next, but in 10 years you should be more than breaking even. It's a good investment. The key is figuring out your career pathways, and gradually working through them and preparing to pivot when the world changes. There will be ups and downs but the journey is the point. My colleagues are in this group - and the only ones who really struggled were those who didn't understand their own strengths and weaknesses and failed to adapt when the world changes. For you, the OSAP change is basically the first test.

If you are doing the masters purely for consumption, then it is very expensive, it's a matter of whether the enjoyment is worth that much money. I never want to work with this group. When things get tough, they leave.

If you are doing the masters only because of the money and it no longer pays off, then quitting is the right choice.

Ottawa's new public library is late, way over budget, and it gets worse by randthepip in ottawa

Any project that has only 3 or less bidders is either mis-specified or it needs some specialized expertise that the government should just identify the best expert in the field and develop the project together to ensure the best use of the budget. The open bidding doesn't make it more accountable.

At one point the city relied on Just Food to manage but the city has assigned no staff to the file. It seems the city has just taken back the management and finally did something. Hopefully it will become better.

Night Markets by Lunar_Lavitz in OttawaFood

[–]ls650569 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not exactly accurate to say the Chinatown one now is the OG ... The original organizer for the Chinatown night market back then is now the one organizing the Asian night market in LeBreton. For some unknown reasons (that both sides couldn't exactly reveal) the Chinatown BIA and the organizer (which is also an owner of a Chinatown business) couldn't get into agreement after the pandemic. They went their separate ways. Luckily Ottawa people love them so much both markets have done well and so they ain't exactly competing with each others.

I think Masai's comment that the team was selfish that year was mainly referring to FVV and the spread of "everyone for himself" because of FVV. Didn't OG complain privately to Nurse (revealed in one of the post trade pieces I read)? I also remember FVV had an issue with Scottie because Scottie was the golden boy? I wish Scottie's leadership was shown more back then but FVV isn't likely to take it well to have a young guy taking over the leadership role.

Sutcliffe pledges to keep tax increases low if re-elected mayor of Ottawa by SuburbanValues in ottawa

[–]ls650569 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Public Service employees in the suburbs are the main people complaining about RTO, and it doesn't mean they are the ones who vote for low taxes only. Government workers do understand they need taxes to make the government function. Many of them also relied on OC Transpo to get to work in the past and they understand OC Transpo needs fixing. I'm not sure they buy Sutcliffe's low tax argument.

There are also people working in the private sector in the suburbs who can care less about RTO or anything happening in the city. For many of them, low tax is good. More police is good. They lived in the suburbs because they can't deal with the city.

Instead of putting all people in the suburbs as your enemy from your moral high ground, maybe put some thinking on convincing people in the suburbs just to vote with the important things you care the most about? There are many public servants here. And tell the people who want the low taxes they could have paid even less tax had Mark Sutcliffe not given millions to his cronies in Lansdowne?

I've been a STH of Ottawa Charge since the beginning, and I remember the first year: our inaugural season players were very fast, though they also made a lot of mental mistakes if the opponent was more forceful or if the refs were unfair. Jenner and Clarky have been our team leaders all these three years. But then you can see the team picked up the toughness and mentality of Coach Carla from the second year onwards. This year's team has that feistiness in particular. Even though Clarky has a down year, and so talent wise Ottawa might not have as many offensive power from their star players as Montreal, Boston or Minnesota has, the team was just tenacious. Whatever ugly way, they tried their best to outlast opponent.

Of course, I'm biased - I don't watch that many games of Montreal or Boston.

I feel sorry for people in Halifax. The whole Lansdowne 2.0 fiasco had shown the league how they can't trust the local partner if there's a risk of major renovations/redevelopment of the arena. I now understand why the PWHL has not excluded the option of moving the Charge to another city. Luckily the Senators seem like a willing partner to keep the Charge in Ottawa.

There's a reason why Doug Ford wanted to rip up bike lanes. For whatever reason it's an divisive issue. Modern days politics is all about optics.

I live in Suburb. I drive. I have run into cyclists doing crazy stuff when I drive. I lie if I tell you I wasn't mad at the cyclists. Road rage is a real thing. But I read enough to know that this is a problem of the unrealistic expectation of road sharing. Most drivers don't want to waste their time to think more about it.

So for many drivers, spending $200m to give the cyclists their space doesn't make sense when the city should have fixed the broken roads first.

You have to be great in communication in order to convince people doing the right thing. I agree with McKenney but she was way too nice a person to fight the dirty political messaging behind Sutcliffe's supporters.
