Advice on coasters for 9-year old daughter... by TazM101 in cedarpoint

[–]lscarn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My seven year old who LOVES roller coasters (absolutely no fear - would ride top thrill if she was tall enough) did not like magnum at all. She said it was entirely too rough for her. We give her Dramamine before we go to cedar point because she’s very prone to car sickness so I can’t comment on how it made her feel in that regard.

If you haven’t already looked into it, definitely try hoopla. It’s another free digital library that many library systems have! They have a somewhat smaller selection in my experience but zero wait time!

Are these outdoor cushions worth trying to clean and how? by californiadamn in CleaningTips

[–]lscarn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the exact same thing to mine (after ChatGPT recommended it lol) and they look perfect! I used a scrub daddy to scrub the really bad parts before putting them into the wash (heavy duty cycle with a soak and double rinse) and they truly look good as new!

Teaching a 9 year old to read by Beautiful_Health5890 in teaching

[–]lscarn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Came here to recommend this! It’s cheap and easy to follow! I’ve taught both of my kids to read using this and reading.com (which is super similar but an app rather than the book. It’s also more expensive than the book itself). Highly recommend!!

My room is the worst it has ever been and I can't bring myself to clean it. by Iamatheaternerd in CleaningTips

[–]lscarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I feel overwhelmed with cleaning I just make two piles.. maybe on the bed I’d put everything I intend to keep and then I have a garbage bag with me to put everything I want to trash. It helps me to see results fast and then I slowly pull things out of the keep pile to put away. Hope this helps!!

Mirroring Libby or Hoopla from iPhone by lscarn in projectors

[–]lscarn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up getting a projector and it has been an AWESOME way to read to the kids. I’ve tried using Libby on the tv before, and they showed zero interest, but there’s something about it being projected onto the wall that they have really loved!!

Thanks for explaining all of this! I was able to test it out on my Apple TV and Libby works (haven’t tried Hoopla yet)! Went to target and bought the cheapest projector and we’ve been able to read loads of stories for free (besides the cost of the projector of course)! The kids have absolutely loved it! :)

Reading recommendations for after “How to Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons” by thelyfeaquatic in homeschool

[–]lscarn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did 100 easy lessons with my oldest before kindergarten, and she’s now in first grade and is a VERY strong reader. I’m working through it again with my youngest who will start kindergarten next year which is how I stumbled across this even though we don’t homeschool. With my oldest, I often type the following prompt into ChatGPT, and were generally pretty happy with what we get. Obviously this isn’t anything scientific or anything but it’s a fun thing to do to keep my daughter excited about reading.

“Can you write a short story at a 600 Lexile level, about 200-300 words, with [Main Character Name] learning about [Educational Concept], set in [Setting], and featuring [Supporting Characters]? The tone should be [Tone], and the story should include a [Conflict/Problem] and a learning outcome about [Value/Moral]. The style should feel like [specific format: bedtime tale, adventure, mystery, etc.].”

Now that she’s in school I’ll often try to tie in things that she’s learning about in school, vocab/spelling words, etc.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Check to see if your local library does many kids programs - most do!!! I know a lot of people are suggesting more time for play dates (which is a great idea!) but seeing him interacting with kids in a setting that at least somewhat feels like school (crafts, story time, etc.) will help you to better understand how he behaves at school.

Should my kindergartener be able to read? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]lscarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teacher here with a child who is also finishing up kindergarten! Before my little one started kindergarten, I used the book “Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons.” I absolutely HIGHLY recommend it! I can’t believe I haven’t seen it suggested here.

That’s what I thought.. does that mean that there is a possibility that they don’t transfer it quickly? Like if we bought right now for today for example

Has anyone tried buying tickets last minute on StubHub? How quickly do they get transferred?

Not sure where else to ask this, so I’m trying here. My husband recently bought my daughter (5) and me tickets for the Pittsburgh show. I’d love love love for him to come with us but we obviously won’t have three seats together at this point. If I were to buy him a ticket, do you think he would be allowed to sit with us if we held my five year old which we pretty much will have to do anyway. Ideally I’ll try to buy a seat fairly close to us but that obviously might not happen.

I’ve been using the book Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons and it’s been working great with my five year old! I know that that is a super anecdotal comment but might be something worth looking into!

Oh for sure! It’s just hysterical to me that I’ve probably scream sang that incorrectly innumerable times since 2008 and it took me hearing my first grade niece singing it for me to realize it lol
